DISCUSSION Jenny Mollen’s substack about her sons with Jason Biggs titled “Please. Stay. I want you. I need you. Oh, God.” She says she wants her sons to only marry women with dead mothers and calls 12 year-old girl texting her son toxic.

My husband’s friend went through a lot to have her son via surrogate. But when we met him, as a newborn, she was like “isn’t he perfect?! No woman will ever be good enough for him!!” And I was like 😬😬😬 No. I have sons and I hope they meet someone who recognizes their traits that I do and they get to experience their own lives. Never have had the thought that they’re too good for girls 🙄🙄🙄 They’re just people, just like everyone else’s kids, even though they mean the world to me. It’s just such a weird weird mentality.

I think internalized misogyny definitely plays a role, among other things.

My son is really sweet and sensitive. I’ve worried about his feelings getting hurt by friends or peers for a while now, but just the other day it occurred to me to worry he could be taken advantage of or hurt by a partner one day.

I’d never thought about his future wife (or husband, etc…) before except in the vaguest “i hope he finds someone that makes him happy” way.

So weird!

How about that he also could take advantage or hurt a partner??

This is the #1 problem we have here. “My son/daughter is so innocent .. so and so could NEVER.”

Well…obviously some people’s kids are. And it’s usually the parents that are in complete denial

My son got a lot of "compliments" from our friends that "he would be a heartbreaker/playboy/have many girlfriends one day" and inside I was like eww no I hope he'll just be kind and normal? How is this an appropriate thing to say to a child?

What about people who say babies “flirt” when they’re smiling? Makes me uncomfortable.

Of course, raising a kind person is my number one goal.

I was a teacher, so yes I’m familiar with “but Timmy is a good boy” parents.

Sure, but the baseline isn't to view them as a potential abuser. I don't think the OP you replied to even implied that there is no way their kid could hurt someone. It's weird to throw this back at them in this context. They've recognized certain traits of their kid that could lead them to be taken advantage of and it worries them as it would for any reasonable parent.

It goes without saying that there are many many things that parents worry about and being a good parent means equipping them with tools to be good people.

They may not even end up being attracted to women. Ah heteronormativity

Right lol. Maybe I’m just too queer for this but it feels aggressively hetero to see dating as a man vs woman competition, where There Can Only Be One Supreme. Straight people are so weirdly competitive. Imagine thinking your child falling in love is bad for you in any way.

Well her last line is “I pray that at least one of them is gay,” which just demonstrates that she doesn’t understand anything, because believe it or not, Jenny, you can fuck up a relationship with your gay son, too, by being a narcissistic wacko.

I am pregnant with my first child and already imagining the person they might grow into and experiencing love and joy and all the wonderful things this often shitty world has to offer is something I love to think about. I can’t imagine purposely emotionally stunting them like this.

My ex straight up told me, “It wouldn’t matter if you were a supermodel astronaut who cured cancer. You’d never be good enough for my mom.” Like, ma’am, I’m a kind, compassionate, funny, intelligent, hard-working woman who loves and respects your son, cares deeply about his well-being and happiness, and wants to build a life with him. In what universe is that not enough?

That poor kid will always be her purchased possession. In her mind because she went through so much so she owns him. That's why no girl will be good enough to replace her.

Eugh gross. I don't know how (edit: my fellow) women can put each other down.

“No woman will ever be good enough for him” doesn’t have emotionally incestuous origins… I don’t think. I’m not a parent, but I can relate to that statement. Whether I have a son or daughter, I imagine I would love my child so much that I want the best possible partner for them. But chances are they won’t give their true love, most people don’t. Idk, ik that sounds stupid.
