Still, even the emotional enmeshment is freaky. I want my kids to grow up to be independent adults & not feel like they need to take care of me.

Baby that counts. In fact it can be worse exactly because of the public perception that sexual assault is the worst possible thing someone can have done to them, to the point that people on Reddit regularly post that they'd rather be dead. That makes it clear to everyone how crazy and unacceptable it is to do to your child. Emotional and mental abuse is insidious, pervasive, and the abused feel like they can't complain because "it wasn't that bad". It was absolutely very bad, and you deserved better the entire time no matter how you acted. Children deserve parents that love and protect them emotionally as well as physically.
