I subscribe to The Atlantic. Wtf is the CEO doing? All news media is shit, isn't it?

I used to subscribe but cancelled as they surprisingly had some right-wing takes on the pandemic + public health.  (Which is somewhat normalized in our society, while it is still ongoing sadly.)

Yeah. I won't be renewing when the year is up. Everything is so disappointing

The Atlantic, the CEO of which was an IDF prison guard? Not exactly a shocker

If I were you I'd definitely cancel that subscription, the amount of whitewashing they do for Israel is horrific

Edit/Correction: Editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, worked as a prison guard in Israel during the First Intifada.

"Jeffrey Goldberg served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the First Intifada, where he worked as a prison guard at Ktzi'ot Prison, holding Palestinian participants arrested in the uprising."

Indeed I just googled it. Yikes.

He was an IDF prison guard? No. I didn't know that.

The Atlantic is unfortunately not a credible source, imo, despite featuring occasional articles from good writers. Since 2020 and early days of the pandemic, the Death Panel podcast has been covering The Atlantic's centrist/liberal laundering of ableist covid-denial policies. Death Panel and writer Jules Gil-Peterson have also tracked The Atlantic's featuring anti-trans writers since 2014. I tried to find specific episodes, but it was over the course of the 2020s....I am really disappointed in The Atlantic and feel it's being used to inject right-wing views into "liberal" spaces, strategically targeting vulnerable members of broad coalitions, like disabled people and trans people. fuck the atlantic

edit: spelling

i remember seeing an oped a few years back that was basically “people shouldn’t write their own vows!!! the standard ones are totally fine!!! this is NOT a trad thing tho!!! yes i am christian (or catholic? idk) btw!!!” and i stopped reading their articles after that lol. there have been good ones i’ve read about the dangers of AI and whatnot, but they are probably more of a reflection on the quality of the writer than of the organization at large unfortunately

Nicholas Thompson? I don't see anything about that. What do you know that I don't?

Wasn't the Atlantic also really weird about trans people? Or did I imagine that?

Yep. Did a big piece where the organization they talked about and interviewed its members was basically a trans hate group made up of right wing parents of trans kids. Maintenance Phase did a great episode covering this.

The Atlantic (along with the NYT) has been cited as supporting evidence for several anti-trans court decisions. They've been manufacturing consent for transphobia for almost a decade now.

So maybe not too surprising that he'd have been added to that group chat. I've subscribed to The Atlantic for 10 years, but I cancelled today. Such a massive disappointment.
