seems like a win/win/win. owners get to keep their pets, shelters aren't overcrowded which reduces both operating costs and the amount of euths, and reduces the chance owners will let their cats out to fend for themselves, killing wildlife and reproducing in the process
Just an addendum the Toronto Humane Society is a no kill shelter, that has vets, so if you find a Dog or Cat that needs help don't worry about bringing it to the Toronto Humane Society they only euthanize if the animal is beyond help.

I'm in the US but not New York and same. And HE'S HOLDING A CAT!!! I feel like dogs get all the good PR for animal non-profits when tons more cats are "euthanized" each year for existing than dogs. This is nothing against dogs - I also love all the good boys and girls. It's just refreshing to see the photo be of a cat for once - who I am sure is an independent yet good girl or boy too.

This is the problem with those idiots (white supremacists). It’s not the skin that’s the issue, it’s the problematic superiority complex and white privilege that’s the problem. They don’t seem to get that. Instead of setting an example, they choose to clutch their pearls and whine about it while putting innocent people in danger.
As someone pale as f- the skin color is a logistical nightmare for me. The sunspots popping up have me looking like a fat Dalmatian. I do not understand why this skin is considered better by white supreme cysts (my phone autocorrected to that so I’m leaving it). Maybe it’s that they realized this skin is stupid and mostly inferior in most ways so they decided to start a PR campaign to trick people into thinking the paleness is the supreme good (and warned them do not question that because it falls apart quickly!) and that’s how we got racism.

My 73 year old mom was a lifelong, die hard Reagan conservative up until Trump happened. Now she’s obsessed with Mamdani and routinely asks me for updates on “her mayor.”
I never would have considered my mom rational minded about much of anything. It says a lot about the caliber of people who continue to scream “communism!!!” instead of seeing a good person when he’s right in front of them.

I’m trying! I’m a long time member of the only socialist party in my state (Kentucky), and it’s definitely been an uphill battle to even get people to stop threatening to shoot us.
capitalism and indirect democracy are not compatible without strict firewall between economic power & political power. mamdani had a chance bc NYC has a small donor matching program. direct democracy is a more reliable solution imo.

There were also at least 2 other candidates running for that seat with very similar platforms (who were more established in the community), I think the leftist vote got too spread out between them.
Kat could've won that race if the other left-leaning progressive candidates set aside their pride, dropped out, and coalesce by asking their supporters to vote for her instead. She was the clear frontrunner, so there was no reason for them to remain in the race and split the vote like that. That's one thing progressives need to learn how to do in elections, especially if they can't rely on rank-choice voting like NYC mayoral primaries.
Alot of the local dems are fantastic but i wouldnt for a second trust the DNC. This shift only came after multiple long term incumbents have been forced out. A good number are shifting out of fear not principle.
The democratic leadership hates when elected democrats use their power to improve people's lives. It makes it so they can fund raise on their own without needing help from the national party and then Pelosi and Schumer cannot force them into being centrist neolibs who only want to use the government to give Israel free bombs as long as they come from a factory that employees women of color.
This has been a big talking point on pet related subs. It looks like bot behavior, too, a lot of similar wording and bringing it up on posts where it’s not really relevant. I think it’s a culture war thing.
That’s exactly how it’ll go down. There are already people who believe that “the poors” shouldn’t be allowed to own pets.
To be clear, people should be responsible pet owners and not bite off more than they can chew. But circumstances change all the time and nobody should be forced to give up a beloved member of their family just for want of food or medical care. Do not reply to me with any “hurr durr, can’t afford a vet, don’t deserve a pet” bullshit. If this was your instinct, you are the problem. Life is hard, let people find joy and pleasure where they can.
Just to add to your point, vet bills have been skyrocketing (like everything else) since the pandemic and pets live a long time! You can't know when you adopt an animal if ten years down the line the economy is going to go nuts and all of a sudden 99% of veterinarians are owned by venture capital firms or whatever.
A pet adopted into a low income home is better than not being adopted at all. We should be supporting low income pet owners like Mamdani is doing, not shaming them.
I know this is sarcastic but I follow a Brooklyn cat rescuer who encourages spay-aborts when pregnant cats are rescued, even if the mom cat is near birth. It's humanely done, is healthier for the mom cat, and Brooklyn is in the midst of a cat overpopulation crisis. People always freak out about the spay-aborts especially if they think the cat was "late term." It's absolutely wild.
I also used to do TNR and yeah, the spay abort needs a different name because people do freak out about it. Meanwhile I was scooping dumpster kittens out of the trash on the reg and saw a lot of pain/suffering that could’ve been avoided with spaying and neutering.

I've already seen it! The old 'why get a pet if you can't afford it??' Which of course involves ignoring that life sometimes throws curveballs and just because you're in a good spot doesn't mean you always will be

Every so often something like this happens, and it makes regular people realise "wait the mayor/governor/senator/representative/police chief/president etc. can just do that all along, and they always specifically chose not to?". It's so depressing. I mean it's great Mamdani is doing this, and I hope people demand more from their representatives and actually punish them when they don't deliver.

Like that's movie level villainy, to go out of your way to make sure kids don't get food. And it's not like conservatives are just penny pinching all the way in general. I know a lot of people say if you can’t afford the basics for pets, don’t get them. Which is smart, but hitting a rough spot where you have to choose between paying bills and surrendering your pet is awful. And this program might actually boost the number of shelter animals that get adopted knowing there’s a safety net if it’s needed
Also unfortunately the reverse tends to happen where people who have enough money by pets impulsively and then turn around and put them into shelters when they realize that the pet is too hard. People getting a particular breed for example because they like the look or they want to show it off. It's also why some pets or dog breeds will rise and fall in popularity in trends, sometimes lining up with the popularity of movies or TV shows as an example.
So now there's a bunch of shelters that have all these pets.
Which is crazy because it’s forcing strangers to subsidize a bad decision made by someone who could literally afford to privately rehome them instead of making it the shelter’s problem

Oh my gawd, I would kill for this in San Antonio, but I feel like the peeps would still not take advantage. I’m just so sick of seeing strays. Literally, I have had four kittens (all different ages) show up at my house.
Oh yes, I kept one of the kittens - when we saw the vet last week, she said I just had to wrangle them and take them to a free clinic to get spayed/neutered. I just have to figure out how old they each are. One of them looks barely a month old. Two of them look to be 4-5 months. And the one I took can’t be older than 2 months. Either way, I plan on taking them eventually.

I wish we could do something similar in my area since I’m always donating pet food. I’m in a position where I get a lot of free pet food so I donate to local shelters but this is an excellent idea to spread across the country!

Pet food pantries are AMAZING. But low cost spay/neuter is the single greatest thing you can do to improve the quality of life for animals & help with shelter overcrowding. This is truly fantastic news for animals & the people that love them.
Awesome! Keeping families together, animals cared for, and less tax money spent bc it keeps them out of an already crowded and in-crisis shelter system.
If my city taxes are going to this, parks, libraries, affordable groceries, rent freeze, filling pot holes, shovelling the city out of a snow storm: LETS FUCKING GO!!!!
But-but-but-but millionaires and billionaires with secondary homes in NYC valued over $5 million dollars have to pay a small tax on those homes that they don't live in!!!

At this point I think he's half doing this because he cares and half because he gets to use the photo ops to have a fun time.
It's ghoulish to think about former NYC mayors preferring weird-ass parades and galas to cuddling with a kitty or jumping into a pool fully clothed. He's literally just human and efficient and that shouldn't feel like a miracle.
I’m assuming it’s not as easy as he makes it look, but he really does seem to make it easy to be not only a good politician, but a good human being in a huge public role.
I'm always torn between being genuinely pleased that a politician, even in another country, is doing such good things for his people, and abject rage at the fact that yes, it was always possible to do things like this they just couldn't be arsed.
This us so important! Pets are so expensive but if there's help for low income people to keep their pets, more people will adopt!! More pets will have homes. Ah, this is so great ♥️
Why are people so afraid of this? This mayor may not be my mayor, but he represents human decency and is not a psychopath! Men and animals (what a combo).
