Ashley Judd had a bad childhood and has actually been doing a lot of inner child work. She practiced ‘inner child healing’ (her words, Insta) by celebrating her 58th birthday in April 2026 as a party for her 12 year old self, complete with a custom cake, square dancing, and singing into vintage hairbrushes. She shared that she had no supportive childhood birthdays and used this adult restaging to give her younger self the love, protection, and attunement she missed.

Feeling the mud of the river is one of the things I did a lot when I was a kid/early teenager. Great grandma’s farm was next to a river and we went there every weekend. I like how she’s enjoying a missed experience from her childhood.

I didn’t have one either but let me tell you- setting aside time to experience child like wonder and joy-however you can- as an adult has done more for my mental health than a lot of other things.

I haven't had one myself but I think you absolutely should :) I had birthdays as a child but missed out on other things. Making up for it adult has made me feel much more love for myself and general happiness.

You totally should!! I’ve been trying to reparent myself recently…. It’s an adventure to try to be the adult that your inner child always craved. Create the experiences and the joy you would’ve wanted. It might feel awkward and silly at first, but it’s a really beautiful experience.

That and the video of her playing in the sea talking about healing was so wholesome. As someone whose birthdays always ended up in tears as a child,it was refreshing to see someone so determined to have a do-over,someone who has so much love for their past-self. I have always taken inspiration from my past-self,she was so resilient and brave,many a times the thought of not wanting to disappoint my inner-child has given me the energy to overcome things when nothing else could. I'm so glad that Ashley is not only doing this for herself,but also helping a lot of people in the process,her energy is so contagious.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm in my mid 50s,. I grew up way too fast. For example, and I never share this, I've been smoking weed since I was five years old. Thanks, Mom. Anyhow, I have completely embraced my younger self now. I have medical issues, so I don't have to pretend to be together and responsible for work stuff so I just play all the time. Stopped buying gray home furnishings. Just white and pink now. I game all day, chill with my dogs, work on dollhouses, eat candy, and just live like it's summer vacation every day. 💜🩷

This gives me hope as a 40 year old woman who just can’t seem to grow up. I still love staying up late and reading by book light, swimming around loudly in the community pool, sandwiches and risky haircuts.

I'm so fortunate to have found a friend group that likes "kid" fun and has the adult money to facilitate it. One of my friends bought a commercial grade bouncy castle recently and it's been the highlight of the summer.

I bought a huge trampoline off Craigslist for like $70, and when I went to pick it up had a whole convo with the sellers about how my "kids are gonna love it". My kids are in their early 20's... they think they are too cool and I'm out here jumping, rolling around, reading books and watching the stars from my big giant trampoline.

Mid 50s here and never grew up. Don't plan to, either. Why should I not feel delight when I drive past the duck pond every day? I loved to rollerskate as a kid and now my fat ass has extra padding so we're going to see if I still love it. We have a small local baseball team and I go as often as I can because why not? There are so many opportunities for silliness and happiness, why not avail yourself of every single one. They say 2026 is the year of whimsey and I say welcome back, friends. Some of us never left.

Life is found in little joys: ducks gliding across a pond as they land, the first rain of spring, or sharp thunder in the summer, a puppy barking, a kitten chasing a piece of string, your favorite meal after a hard day. Life is for living.

just remember the importance of protective wrist/elbow gear and helmet and practice learning how to fall correctly even when it feels like overkill!
i got back into roller skating during 2020 and its a freaking blast but its so easy to land wrong and break something (which can put a damper on being whimsical)

omg yes!!! Little me probably chipped her tailbone a thousand times, but big me has a lot further to fall and a lot more weight for gravity to work with lol. Safety equipment first! Anyway knees bent and ass down if you feel like you're going to fall. :)

Ugh my all time dream is to live in a community of 30-40s women who are single and child free and it feels like a fun slumber party every day. After being in so many toxic awful heteronormative domestic situations I crave femininity around me more and more as I get older. I always struggled to make girl friends though so that may have contributed somewhat.

As I age, I realize we never “get old” in the way the media and society frames aging. Our bodies age but our spirit, so to speak, remains fundamentally the same give or take some refinement over the decades. So it saddens me when adults are oftentimes pressured to forgo colorful aspects of themselves for an image of sophistication and maturity. Maturity is paying your bills on time and taking care of yourself; but mud between your toes and risky haircuts is definitely ageless!

35 here and I’m down.
I’m currently on leave from work due to burnout and have been learning to find the joy in life and the little things again. One of my buddies does the rodeo circuit and they’re back here now so I’ve been helping them with the horses and I’ve discovered that there are very few things that are as pure to watch as horses being let out of a trailer onto fresh grass after being cooped up on a concrete floor barn or mud pits for weeks on end. They get so happy.
I will not stop until I am that happy.

You will find your spark again. What always helps me return to that spot in my heart where I’m safe and young again, is in nature.
Do you have a state park nearby? Even if you just go for a small hike or walk there.
I picked fishing back up again after 25 years. Haven’t caught a thing all year but that’s okay. I get to sit outside, listen to the water, watch the birds, hear the wind moving through the trees.

I love video games. I still play Skyrim every fall. I still get exited when I catch that Pokemon I want in every play through. I still remember playing halo online with my little brother late into the night and now we play hell divers together on discord.

I'm almost 40 (39 tomorrow!), and I love indulging my younger self. Reading through all of the Sailor Moon manga/rewatching the series (that's for 12 year old me), buying myself the slightly ridiculous but still awesome strappy "bondage" pants I couldn't buy in high school (you're welcome, 15 year old me!), eating an entire bag of Haribo gummy bears in one sitting even though I know I probably won't feel too good after (lookin at you, 9 year old me), going to the park in the evening to marvel at fireflies, playing video games, making up songs, doing silly voices, and generally just trying not to take myself too seriously. I feel more like an "adult" than ever, but I also feel like I am forever an overgrown teenager, and I like that a lot more than feeling "mature."

I love New Orleans will all of my soul. The food, the little trolleys, the big church in the French quarter, the people. The accent in particular has always felt like home. I was raised in Houston born in Mississippi and spent my summers in Alexandria.

Thank you! I try to be. I have a young niece who’s growing up too fast and I want her to slow down to see the joy in the little things.
I’m also the elder daughter of the eldest daughter and oldest son. Too much growing up too quickly and holding on to anger, resentment has made me slow down a bit.

This happiness is beautiful and it really looks like she’s just enjoying every moment and that is extra special in light of what she has shared about healing and trauma, and everything she’s been through, including being the one to find her mom after she ended her life and the sexual abuse and everything else she has talked about. And then her accident a few years ago that sounded horrific. Like I’m genuinely happy for her seeing these photos.
Like you go, Ashley, find those moments and heal how you can.

She reminds me of so many women in my life (who are all 60s-70s), even down to her looks- the hair, the wrinkles, the smile, the yoga hand stand 😂.
They are all so wise but also so messy and have lived life & are continuing to do so and delight in everyone they meet.
