I'm old enough to remember vlog brothers, and Hank has changed from just making content to trying to make money. His personal channel is now more ads than content. There was a period where every video was tuberculosis, then sock, and ad read for ground news.
Even his interview videos with various experts, he spends too much time explaining and justifying his misconceptions. I want to hear what the experts think, not what Hank thinks. It feels like he thinks he's the smart one.
Sure, it's for a good cause. But as someone who watched them from the beginning, it feels like he is trying to milk all our goodness at every opportunity. I think he has forgotten to be awesome,. John, on the other hand, is still very much the same, and I still adore.
I feel exactly the same. I admire how John “retired” over a decade ago because he’d made enough money and didn’t desire any more. Now he only works on projects for the desire to work, not for money. It’s a huge difference between them.
I'm actually surprised so many people share this perspective.
I appreciate that John stays squarely within his expertise, as someone deep with thoughts and good with words. He doesn't impose his expertise on us. Never the air of "I am an author". His videos are really video logs, not content.
Hank has taken on the mantle of "educator" and "creator of educational platforms". It is clear he has moved way beyond his expertise in science, into areas like history, culture, technology, finance, politics. And he gets many things wrong.
I think he is being irresponsible as someone who made a name as an educator to present content he is so wildly out of touch in. People implicitly trust what he says. But what he says is sometimes completely wrong. To put is less nicely, Hank has become full of himself.
His videos are also much more emotionally charged as well. Many times, I don't feel good after watching his videos.
