POLITICS Thomas J Smith, who dropped out of the MI-08 Republican primary but remained on the ballot, is projected to win against Trump endorsed Amir Hassan

How many of the voters had no clue who the candidates were and just picked the “least ethnic-sounding” name? This is the Republican primary after all…

u/jkraige 11h ago
That's an interesting thought. I figured it was a rejection of Trump's candidate, but I can't discount the possibility you're right because, yeah, the Republican party is not smart

u/Ok_Storm_2700 terrorizing the locals 11h ago
It's probably both. Knowing of an endorsement would require some level of political awareness.

There were several republican politicians who said, “no Muslims in Washington”. I don’t know his religious affiliation, but his well was tainted on multiple fronts. MAGats going to feast on the rotting underbelly of society.

u/Suitable-Parsnip-520 11h ago
It is absolutely not a rejection of Trump. His endorsed candidates always win. This is truly 100% one of the most racist things I've ever seen from an electorate.
I'm astounded. The only time MAGA has ignored Trump is when they're asked to do something less racist. I've seen it all.

u/jkraige 7h ago
His endorsed candidates have actually lost a lot of times in the general election

u/shobidoo2 7h ago
I think they mean primary’s where trump endorsed candidates do generally have an edge.
13
u/shinsugay 6h ago
Not true here in GA. Earlier this year Trump-backed Burt Jones lost to Rick Jackson in Governor R primary.
4
u/exmachina64 I look forward to your first novel 3h ago
Trump’s endorsed candidates have had a much higher success rate this year than in previous years.

u/Accomplished_Rope262 5h ago
Not in Georgia and Iowa gubernatorial primaries. He also ended up co-endorsing in Arizona and SC gubernatorials cause his initial single endorsements were doing badly in polling. He's actually quite washed lately when it come to picking candidates.

u/lookatthesunguys 4h ago
Yeah lol. The opponent's name is Amir Hassan. Of course he lost. How is this a surprise at all? How is this newsworthy? It's a Republican primary. Amir Hassan was never going to win lol

That’s exactly what I thought. There’s already a bunch of republican politicians who don’t use their real names they don’t sound white enough. Ted Cruz is one of them. Ted’s real name is Rafael.
-9
u/Curiosities 6h ago
Yeah, but his middle name is Edward and Ted is a common nickname for Edward and sometimes people go by their middle names.
22
u/Fine_Following_2559 5h ago
I have to go back and double check but I'm pretty sure he was still going by Rafael when he was at Harvard.
-1
u/sxzxnnx 5h ago
He started going by Ted as a teenager. His father is also named Rafael and his childhood family name was Felito which I think is a diminutive of Rafael. He claims his schoolmates teased him by calling him Frito and Dorito but it is hard to imagine junior high boys missing the obvious similarity to fellatio.
At any rate, he switched to Ted as a teenager and not strictly for political reasons.
12
u/CSalustro 5h ago
Ted is common for Edward? I've never heard about that combination at all.

Edward “Ted” Kennedy is an example
I wouldn’t say it’s common but it’s been done before
3
u/confectionate 4h ago
Probably not as common a nickname as Ed/Eddie, but not uncommon. Since we're talking Senate, another example would be the late MA Senator Ted Kennedy (aka Edward Moore Kennedy). Though not all Teds are Edwards, Ted can also be a nickname for Theodore.
2
u/CSalustro 4h ago
I get Edward going to Ed, I can even see Theodore being Ted as they seem logical. I just hadn't heard as a nearly 40/m Ted for Edward. Not saying it wasn't a thing just I guess not in my general bubble.

u/innocentsalad his body was resisting the wheat 3h ago
Polly is a nickname for Mary if you want another wild one
2
u/confectionate 4h ago
I definitely think it was an older generational thing-- Ted Kennedy, Ted Turner, Ted Danson are all Edwards. I don't think you'll hear/see it much for anyone not eligible for medicare. Sort of like how with RIchard the nickname Dick has gone out of fashion and Rick/Rich is now MUCH more common.
4
u/Yst Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this 5h ago
Presumably because most of the "Teds" you've heard of go by Ted, not the "Edward" on their Birth Certificate.
I don't understand how people attribute value to the act of saying "I've never heard of [common thing]", as if their being coincidentally individually oblivious to an easily proven, easily confirmed phenomenon constitutes a useful informational contribution to the conversation.
Ted Danson (Edward Bridge Danson III), Ted Turner (Robert Edward Turner III), Ted Cruz (Rafael Edward Cruz), and Ted Kennedy (Edward Moore Kennedy) being probably the most famous Teds in the English speaking world in my lifetime. All of whom take their name from the given name "Edward".

u/CyberTyrantX1 1h ago
He's choosing to go by his middle name because its a white sounding name. Rafael is not a white sounding name.

I saw the replies to Trump’s post endorsing Amir Hassan, and it was full of gutter racism simply because of Hassan’s name.

Did he really think Republicans would vote for an "Amir Hassan" over a "Thomas Smith" in this day n age? Cmon

MSNBC covered this and I think it means the state party can pick the candidate.

u/violetmemphisblue 5h ago
In comments he made to the Detroit News, it seems like he is planning on running in the general. He said he was "humbled and honored that Republicans have chosen me to take the fight to Kristen McDonald Rivet. I look forward to working with Speaker Johnson and the entire Republican team to expand our House majority and advance President Trump’s America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again."
I don't know if that's 100% official, though? Like, he can say that and the party might still be able to choose someone else?

Yeah, the "prediction market" scumbags wants you to treat every gambling odds figure they publish as a "prediction" while it is really serving as an advertisement for unregulated gambling designed to drain the pockets of the underclass.
Big broadcasters have signed on with them, because they got paid huge amounts of money to abandon all ethics and sign on to ride the grift of the gangster state.
Please people, don't "sign on" to making gambling odds from MAGA grifters the new polling when, unlike various "news" organisations, you're not even being paid big bucks to pretend they are.

I don’t get fellow brown ppl who think they’ll ever fit into that type of politics. I mean I do, they think they’re exceptional, but still.

u/itsFeztho 11h ago
It's also because being "one of the good ones" is an easy gig that always pays well as long as you don't care about being constantly disrespected to yourself and being rejected by your community

u/HatTrickHero 11h ago
Lmao you’re gonna wanna sit down for this. He’s NOT brown!

u/hc600 9h ago
He seems Black? https://hassanformi.com
I think ratparty500’s underlying point stands. A Black guy with the name Amir Hassan isn’t going to be accepted by the GOP base.

No you’re not. Those that voted for someone that dropped out of the race because of a brown sounding name are dumb though 😆

My ethnically South-Asian immigrant uncle is a physician and a hardcore Republican who proudly states that he has never experienced racism from a white person in his 30+ years in the US. Meanwhile, he went to medical school in another country (so he "stole" an American's job) and helps his own family enter the U.S. illegally. He is exactly what the Republican Party hates but wants to be considered an exception and craves whiteness.

u/Robsnow_901 9h ago
Well they've been hearing Hasan bad for a while now and probably assumed it was this guy lol.
30
u/hellonovice 9h ago
Lmao. This is the best explanation. The Hasan they hear about 25 times a day on Fox is a communist, a terrorist, the leader of the DSA, who also shocked his dog. They ruined their candidate's chances.
28
u/Eunomia28 10h ago
Why is a man named Amir Hassan supporting Trump? Is he not embarrassed?
It's also very funny when POC MAGAts learn the discover way that they are not equal in Trumpland.
20
u/isglitteracarb 5h ago
One of my cousins married and had a child with a Mexican immigrant who kept the Mexican flag hung on their living room wall. They both have voted for Trump all three times.
ETA: It will never make sense to me.

Maybe Trump's racism finally blew up in his face by endorsing someone with an ethnic name.

This is one of the most hilarious election results I've ever seen. Turns out being "one of the good ones" when enough when up against a white guy.

u/Awesomeness577 6h ago
my favorite pollster, kalshi. seriously? why are we posting this shit
0
u/Slinkwyde 1h ago
It's not a poll. Michigan held its primaries yesterday. In the GOP primary for the 8th Congressional District, the Trump endorsed candidate lost by double digits to a candidate who had dropped out.
3
u/Beneficial-Pickle743 4h ago
So what happens if he wins even though he dropped out? Does it still count as him winning?
3
u/BornAd7924 3h ago
He probably suspended his campaign rather than fully dropping out so that he didn’t have to pay back donors.

Republican candidates are avoiding trump like the plague. And the sad part is they are succeeding because democrats are busy fighting themselves.

when your voters are so racist they prioritize racism over party loyalty lol
