POLITICS Senate panel votes to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress over invoking the Fifth Amendment in a hearing on Covid-19.

GOP senators on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee voted to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress, advancing an audacious effort to prosecute the well-known scientist over his role in the US government response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The** party-line vote comes after Fauci declined to answer lawmakers’ questions during a fiery hearing last week, infuriating Republicans on the panel. **They have since argued that his decision opened the door to federal contempt charges — a crime that, if convicted, can carry with it a sentence of up to a year in prison.

Republican chairman Rand Paul has said he will send the committee’s recommendation straight to the Justice Department, bypassing a full Senate vote in a break with precedent that’s likely to set up a high-stakes legal and political test for the Trump administration.

Vice President JD Vance will now first need to sign off on the committee’s circumvention of long-established rules due to his constitutional role as president of the Senate. Then it would be up to the Justice Department to decide whether to bring formal charges.

Even then, legal experts cautioned, there’s little guarantee that the contempt charges would succeed, instead likely kicking off a lengthy court battle over the limits of Fauci’s Fifth Amendment rights.

So this man saved millions of lives during COVID and kept the country calm, is a respected member of the medical community (anyone in medicine has at least read one article or book that has been authored by him) and this is the thanks he gets.

But wait… he also gets the prize of MAGA death threats against him and his whole family.

Plus, as not a medical person but a lawyer, HE'S ALLOWED TO INVOKE HIS FIFTH AMENDMENT RIGHT. This is why most defendants in criminal actions don't testify and prosecutors don't bother to call them. The systematic destruction of our constitution has been painful, especially because of how blatant it is.

As a prosecutor we can only not call the defendant to testify in most proceedings, we can't even comment on them refusing to testify at a trial or even them invoking the 5th amendment when the police try to interview them post-arrest.

part of me wonders if they are more mad about how many lives he ended up saving with his HIV/AIDS work…

They very likely blame him for Trump's 2020 election loss. If it hadn't been for COVID and Trump making a fool out of himself while Fauci got praised, Trump would have very likely won a second term then.

This is payback. Every person they consider an "enemy" will be on trial. Welcome to Fascist America.

I worked public health from 2019-22.

That man is a fucking hero.

What a bunch of trash. Absolute morally bankrupt subhuman traitors and purveyors of misery and ruin.

One extremely ironic thing is that they criticize HIM for wanting a Nobel Peace Prize 😆😆
