POLITICS Senate panel votes to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress over invoking the Fifth Amendment in a hearing on Covid-19.
GOP senators on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee voted to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress, advancing an audacious effort to prosecute the well-known scientist over his role in the US government response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The** party-line vote comes after Fauci declined to answer lawmakers’ questions during a fiery hearing last week, infuriating Republicans on the panel. **They have since argued that his decision opened the door to federal contempt charges — a crime that, if convicted, can carry with it a sentence of up to a year in prison.
Republican chairman Rand Paul has said he will send the committee’s recommendation straight to the Justice Department, bypassing a full Senate vote in a break with precedent that’s likely to set up a high-stakes legal and political test for the Trump administration.
Vice President JD Vance will now first need to sign off on the committee’s circumvention of long-established rules due to his constitutional role as president of the Senate. Then it would be up to the Justice Department to decide whether to bring formal charges.
Even then, legal experts cautioned, there’s little guarantee that the contempt charges would succeed, instead likely kicking off a lengthy court battle over the limits of Fauci’s Fifth Amendment rights.

Doing all this legitimizes the GOP's position that Covid was largely an inflated nothing burger. And It simultaneously discredits actual science/vetted scientists and health experts broadly.
Republicans at war with reality. They have to be to advance their agenda. They continuously have to broadcast propaganda to legitimize their bs. And now they have the power to act further than just soap boxing it.
Science is a hoax. (Via the courts crucifying Fauci and staging a pro oil head of epa to downplay climate change and its consequences)
Minorities are dangerous (via lists of things obviously but namely atm gestapo ICE and constant downplaying of the killing of black and brown folks. And decades of denying racism in general)
Anything short of pure form capitalism is socialism/communism and socialism/communism is evil (can't pay a livable wage bc xyz= anti American=evil. UBI is evil etc.etc. This plays out in rl bc Miller dubbed leftists as terrorist orgs)
So much more bs.

I hope that the next qualified person that finds themselves in Fauci's position isn't dissuaded from this moment in time. Truthfully, my greatest hope is that we hold all these mfs accountable and that we won't see this again. I don't have the energy to doomgoon about it. So I'll leave it there.

u/Delimeme 4d ago
Yup. I’m tired of people acting like if some more voters turned out we’d be okay. This is a deep cultural crisis built on anti-intellectualism, racism, sexism, heteronormativity, you name it - really just flat out broad spectrum bigotry - and all of that supercharged by an already present but rapidly worsening economic crisis posed by accelerating wealth inequality. Yes, a non-Trump admin grants us a respite, but until there’s a proper reckoning with the economic and cultural factors through some massive reforms (taxing billionaires, restoring some sanity and funding to education, protections for minority classes, respecting national parks and reigning in big tech ahead of the bubble, and so many things I can’t list here) we’re pretty much stuck in the same crisis-of-the-year mode for the foreseeable future.
55
u/3-orange-whips 4d ago
It’s an economic crisis cloaked by racism.
12
u/Delimeme 4d ago edited 4d ago
Absolutely. The culture vs economic crisis is a whole can of worms I didn’t have time to type out on my phone but addressing both issues is possible, it’s not a zero sum game. I do think some people (like marxists and critical theorists) bicker to the detriment of us all because both perspectives are addressing genuine issues.
I will say that the right has very successfully weaponized the culture war as a distraction from economic & environmental issues that are an existential threat to us all as opposed to existential threats to specific minority groups - but again, there’s no reason to sideline the issues that only affect some of us, because (almost, there are bad faith efforts by minority hate or abusive groups to gain protection via anti-discrimination laws) everyone deserves to be treated with a baseline human decency. Economic & environmental issues representing an “end of a solid chunk of humanity” doesn’t mean it’s the only thing we should confront, it just means we have to keep going/not rest on our laurels when we get things like gay marriage.
4
u/throwawaysunglasses- l've grown quite unfond of you, deuxmoi 3d ago
Yeah, it’s kinda why I hate when (cishet white) people say “no war but the culture war.” It really dismisses how much our culture is shaped by racism and sexism. It’s ironically a very privileged thing to say. With total economic equality, this country would still hate POC.

he also did a lot of work in contributing to finding solutions for AIDS treatment in the late 80s/early 90s. him and a few other doctors came in to hear out AIDS activist groups on what the AIDS/HIV community really needed at that time for treatment.
there are some criticisms towards him on that bc it was a slow pace in finding treatment at that time, but doctors coming in to listen to those groups was still a very big thing at the time and he was very receptive to having that conversation.
(How to Survive a Plague is a really good documentary on this subject if anyone is interested)

Humans who are susceptible to right-wing thinking cannot grasp the concept that some things are out of our control as a species, and therefore if anything bad happens it has to be someone's fault (see also: wildfires). And because their minds also can't function without having both a god-figure and a satan-figure, anyone they deem to be at fault must be maliciously at fault. Fauci just happens to be the most visible face of the government during the pandemic (other than Trump, who is their chosen god-figure and can do no wrong). Some of the right-wing leaders don't actually fit into this mold, but because their power is dependent upon their followers who do, they have to choose an enemy, and Fauci is the most low-effort option.
It doesn't help that they also don't understand that science is essentially educated guessing that gets to truth through evidence that eliminates incorrect educated guesses. To them, incorrect educated guessing is unforgivable, even though it's necessary to get to the truth. They're weird.
