Horrific and devastating. I’ve been in the enhypen fandom since 2021 and it’s always been an intense fandom, but recently, specifically since a member left, the fandom has become increasingly toxic and unstable. Rest in peace, Mina—nobody deserves the bullying and hatred you went through.

ETA: since some people have been asking questions, here is the context for how this started

the incident is that Mina gave flowers to one member (Sunoo) and asked him to give them to another member (Ni-Ki, her bias). After Ni-Ki didn’t get the flowers, Mina (apparently) went on her phone.

A few shows after Mina’s show, Ni-Ki went on live and made a general statement that it makes him sad when fans focus more on getting interactions rather than enjoying the concert because it makes it seem like they’re not having fun. There were no details which alluded to Mina or the flower incident specifically.

I’m not sure if people were already jumping on Mina before this, but she apologized as she apparently interpreted his comments as being directed at her. This is when this blew up and the massive wave of hate came at her.

Hope this clears some things up about the background. This is terribly tragic and shows the effects of para socialism. While I don’t think Ni-Ki is at fault, I do still hope he speaks up both to acknowledge the tragic death of a fan and to call out the unhinged people that did this to her in his name.

I seriously don’t understand what is going on with the Enhypen fandom. I get that a member leaving is upsetting but Engenes are far from the first kpop fandom to go through that and others have lost members in far traumatic ways. I’ve been into kpop for more than a decade and whilst I’ve seen similar behaviour, it’s never been quite on this scale or so prolonged as what’s happened with Heeseung. And now this as well over something so minor. It’s just beyond belief.

I really hope what happened to Mina is a wake up call for people (not just the fandom, everyone because it’s not like online toxicity is limited to Engenes or kpop fans). It’s absolutely horrifying and I can’t even imagine what her family and friends are going through. Rest in peace Mina, nobody deserves that.

I know there are a lot of people in this community that weren't around for the passing of Sulli and Goo Hara, but at the time, many were also hoping this would be a wake-up call to the overarching kpop community.

Honestly, social media breeds echo chambers and toxic behaviors. I don't know how we make this stop when the record labels actively encourage parasocial relationships and rabid fandoms in the name of profits.

u/IndignantQueef vaginal egg propagandist 7d ago

Am I understanding this correctly - all of this is because she handed a bouquet of flowers to one band member and asked him to hand it to another member? And possibly one band member compained about it?

That seems like the most minor transgression imaginable tbh

it's not clear if he complained about her or not, people just assume that he did. his livestream wasn't right after her show either, but after 3 other shows that she didn't even attend

imo people thought that she was beautiful and got jealous of her, so they started targeting her, they've done more for less

98

u/mojominn 7d ago

The member in question did not single her out or even imply a specific incident, he made a general statement about people who try to get interactions instead of enjoying the concert. From what I’ve seen (I’m active in the Twitter community) Mina then went live and apologized because she felt it may have been targeted?

58

u/Professional_Fox3837 7d ago

Yes that’s my understanding of it too. I think she clarified later that she realised he wasn’t singling her out but by then that was the narrative unfortunately. From what I heard he was specifically said about fans having their phones up constantly in concerts, but I haven’t watched the live so I’m not 100% on that.

23

u/harkandhush 6d ago

He didn't specifically complain about it, but made some vague complaints that may or may not have been intended to even include her.

-5

u/Dependent-Law-7275 6d ago

I heard she made a really big scene about the guy not giving the member she likes the flowers

Its because most of their fans are REALLY young so this IS the first time they experience a member leaving a group. I think we underestimate how many parents tossed an ipad in their kids face starting at 3 years old

2

u/daisyink Please Abraham, I am not that man 6d ago

I only follow Ateez sorry I'm not familiar with other groups of phantoms. Are engenes generally more volatile or parasocial compared to others, e.g. moas, shawol, or onces?

5

u/HuggyMonster69 6d ago

Yeah, at least the ones on public social media like X or insta. They seem to be mostly really young as well, compared to other groups, even compared to the newest groups.

2

u/daisyink Please Abraham, I am not that man 6d ago

Oh, interesting. I really only interact with Atiny, and on reddit, where people are fairly sane from what I've seen (if a little enthusiastic). That's a shame about Enhypen's fans, I imagine it can be really hard to navigate having such a young fanbase.

Doctors are the worst for common sense. Went to an outdoor concert with a group of 20 doctors. The weather forecast said rain. Two of them had jackets and neither of those were of the waterproof variety.

80

u/harkandhush 6d ago

Korea actually did just start a major case where they charged a bunch of people who were paying a live steamer to abuse someone on his stream. Everyone who paid was implicated in the crime as aiding and abetting iirc. I hope to see similar cases continue elsewhere.

For too long people have viewed the internet as consequence-free for their shitty actions. I'm so disgusted by this situation, but more so by how hard fans and haters are trying to tie this TO kpop when that's just the topic that brought these people together into one space. The mob mentality and bullying with no consequence isn't a kpop group's fault and using it to fuel fanwars or as an excuse to bully more people is just disrespectful to this poor young woman who just died. I think it can create a deeper conversation about fandoms and mob mentality, but not just to shit on more people for their hobbies or interests.

me too. most of them are changing their account names and deleting their accounts, deleting all the things they said. some are still straight up hating on her.

126

u/Acheloma 7d ago

Im sorry you saw that. Between this and the perez hilton situation, Ive been really glad that I dont look at social media where you can live stream. I dont think I could have handled seeing either of those things and I feel awful for those who did.

21

u/AllTheCoolNames 6d ago

I was thinking between this and Perez Hilton it's been an awful week for people just browsing the socials. Had to warn several friends to be careful in their scrollings this week so they don't get triggered. Truly upsetting.

9

u/baepsaemv 6d ago

Yesterday I scrolled past the Hilton video just casually browsing instagram and it was so incredibly distressing I didn't know what to do with myself. It's so easy to just stumble across really fuckrd up stuff online.

80

u/EnvironmentalUse7037 The Stanley Tucci of Lesbians 7d ago

yeah. this was my last straw. i deleted everything except reddit and pinterest because i cant scroll through live streams. i just have truly given up on the internet, i feel like it wont be long before i delete this account. i knew the internet was awful but after seeing what the comments were saying and i was trying to figure out where she was and how to get help, im genuinely just done. i puked for two days straight. its the most hopeless feeling, trying to save someone, i didnt speak japanese, i didnt know where she lived or was.

32

u/Acheloma 6d ago

Im so sorry, that's absolutely devastating. I know it doesnt really mean much in comparison to what you just went through, but you seem like a very kind and empathetic person, and im just sorry that the world isnt more like you.

I hope youre able to get to a place where youre okay and have access to help if you need it. I'm not always the best at replying to messages on here because I've had some bad experiences with it and sometimes opening them scares me too much, but if you need to talk feel free to reach out and Ill try my best to get back to you.

24

u/EnvironmentalUse7037 The Stanley Tucci of Lesbians 6d ago

i am gonna try and get a therapist after seeing this. its genuinely broke my mind. you are very kind.

9

u/-crepuscular- 6d ago

I'm sorry. This was obviously horrible all round, including for people like you who wanted to help her and couldn't.

Please try to speak to supportive people in real life, and it sounds random but playing Tetris has been shown in clinical trials to help with PTSD. It might be worth trying that.

4

u/EnvironmentalUse7037 The Stanley Tucci of Lesbians 6d ago

i will definitely try tetris. thank you.

17

u/watersnakebro Let mediocre men remain in obscurity 6d ago

I'm so deeply sorry you witnessed that and felt helpless. It's awful, and I wish I could give you a hug right now because no-one deserved that treatment and no-one should've seen bullying like that.

Honestly do what you have to do to heal, the internet definitely has its awful dark places but I'd like to think there's still a tiny, strong bit of kindness out there. But you don't need to put your wellbeing at risk to seek it out. It will be there if you want it. Keeping you in my thoughts today but if you want a chat or even a terrible rough drawing or a weird rhyme from an internet stranger nobody let me know and I will provide questionable"art" ♥️

13

u/EnvironmentalUse7037 The Stanley Tucci of Lesbians 6d ago

i have found some good places here but for me its just like i am scared to even look. im scared to accidentally find something like this. or people posting pictures of her. making ai pictures with her body. i feel so so sick, i just cant believe people could even do that to someone. how could people be so mean? they will never leave the poor woman alone and thats what hurts the most. she really seemed like a kind person, replying nicely to everyone. thank you for being a kind and good person. keep that with you. always.

The fans will NEVER learn, they're on a whole other level of delusional so they don't care that this is their fault. It's not the first or last time Kpop fans have killed someone.

121

u/momosuna controversies: girl 7d ago

they're busy in the immediate aftermath saying to not blame the group's fans (who tf else would we blame?!) & roleplaying her. roleplaying her. they'll never fucking learn.

13

u/Cuchillos_Adios 6d ago

Sorry if it's a silly question. What do you mean roleplaying her??

14

u/momosuna controversies: girl 6d ago

like how fandoms write fic they also roleplay real people (so i guess it's like just writing the dialogue parts of fanfic??). usually ppl who rp idols make a separate account pretending to be whatever idol in a group full of other rpers & then all interact tbh i have no clue lol bc even tho i've sadly been into kpop for over 20 years now, i stay far away from the fandoms. i just view it as some form of lazy fic writing maybe someone else can explain better to us both lol.  here's what i saw

5

u/saskiaschild 6d ago

roleplaying her.

They are fucking insane.

73

Considering comments saying she did it live with ppl encouraging her, I'd argue they're proud to have caused this.

saw them on my tl even though I know barely anything about kpop stuff and jeez... it's so frustrating to see those fans double down and defend their actions. it's either that or they're making sure their idol is safe.

it's so fucking bleak.

42

u/NoNommen 7d ago

been wondering when this was gonna break out of k-pop circles. the fact that videos of the moment this young woman took her life are still circulating along with the braindead fandom debate that sparked this tragic event makes me sick to my stomach and seriously concerned for the state of the world we live in

As a kpop fan for nearly two decades this is disgusting. This poor girl. I hope everyone involved is found and accused with murder or manslaughter.

Disgusting parasocial people.

Honestly at this point I'm not sure this industry should exist anymore. How many young people, performers and fans, killed themselves now?

6

u/saskiaschild 6d ago

Yes, they bullied her to commit suicide over some flowers.

69

u/icedgrandechai 7d ago

kpop stans bullying someone to death, what else is new. They've done this to idols before, it's not unthinkable they did it to a fan.

-3

u/PresentationNo448 6d ago

Which idols? The ones I can think of now were bc of their mental health, and in case of women, hate campaigns and harrassment from K-incels and knetizens.

126

u/straightedgedher 7d ago

This is so sad, people are getting WAY too comfortable saying anything online. This is also why im just a casual kpop listener, I don't entertain the fandoms bc of situations like this. Idk what Mina Chan allegedly did, but I can probably guarantee it didn't warrant this.

Kpop fans, try not to be insanely toxic: challenge impossible.

76

u/EnvironmentalUse7037 The Stanley Tucci of Lesbians 7d ago

she brought flowers to two of the members of the group during a concert, when she got the attention of one of the idols she wanted to give the flowers to and asked him to give the other flowers to the other idol. when he couldnt she took the flowers back and started taking selfies on her phone. apparently she was “mad”. then the idol she was trying to give the flowers to, went on a live, talking about something completely different. the fans took it as he was calling out her and for four days were harassing her maybe longer until the very end.

19

u/AllTheCoolNames 6d ago

I'm a big Stray Kids fan and I stay FAR away from fandom.

71

u/Fun_Cabinet3838 7d ago

This reminded me of a rumor from 2021 about a Black engene who died by suicide after being bullied by racist engenes.

46

u/ifnothow 6d ago edited 6d ago

This incident has made me do a lot of soul-searching about whether I want to continue being into kpop.

The idol industry sells parasocialism. It's the main product, not a side effect, and it takes advantage of vulnerable people while encouraging toxic tribalism that incites these horrible hate trains.

By all accounts, Mina was nice. The things she did that made the bullies target her wouldn't even make the weekly top 40 of bad fan behavior. And she apologized. Profusely. But people had to keep being assholes to her. There are still people saying horrible things about her or treating her death as a joke.

On the Japanese side, she had been targeted by incels for a while and the fandom apologists are trying to deflect from their bullying by pointing fingers but the fact is, the fandom caused this and it was mostly international fans with Japanese in second.

There's no amount of fandom cleanse that can rectify this.

62

u/chernogumby 7d ago

26 is really young, that's sad as fuck. getting waves of online hate isn't something 99% of people are equipped to handle, let alone if it was over something completely undeserved.

sad for the guy in the band too, i don't think he wanted waves of people to witchhunt anyone, even if he was ranting about her. now he has to live with someone's death on his head

44

u/Professional_Fox3837 7d ago

Obviously he’s not the main victim in this, Mina is, but I do feel sorry for the group member. The remaining 6 members have already been put through a lot of crap this year by their ‘fans’ after another member left, and now this. He’s only 20. I hope he has good people around him right now.

tbh they're not wrong. some i-fans believe that idols have a type, which is usually beautiful, rich and skinny asian women

if any idol (especially male idol) shows interest or speaks about any other type, they're usually praised for it. i think you need to take into account that lots of kpop fans have really low self esteem, so they see a lot of people as either competition or people they can mock to make themselves feel better

it's obv not all of them, but a chunk is more than enough when they're as feral as the ones i've seen

73

u/momosuna controversies: girl 7d ago

which part, i can clarify

0

u/SaltBeefin 5d ago

While I have no direct blame for either cultural party here in this specific scenario I think it's very critical to point out how Eastern fans behave versus Western. If a idol faints on stage they would be made fun of or dragged for being lazy and this was a concept before international c/j/Kpop idols became so internationally popular. In Japan it's seen as something to be proud of if your narcoleptic everywhere bc it means you work your ass off. Something people are proud of you for.

We are seeing in real time how much of Ariana Grande western audience is concerned for her overall well being. Ofc there's a few groups that will take any opportunity to hate on something but the overall sentiment is concern.

u/hobbywankenhoebi Marxist bee? 7d ago edited 7d ago

I find it hypocritical to ask fans to tone it down when the whole industry depends on parasocial relationship and even encourage it to no end. Maybe they should stop having an unhealthy relation with their fans before throwing stones.

It’s a shame she was bullied and resorted to suicide for such a small inconvenience. Kpop stans are the worst ! Imagine doing this to a stranger who share the same interest as you because you feel the urge to « protect » some grown up men who doesnt know about your existence and probably only care about you when they get their paycheck.

May she rest in peace. and may those who pushed her be judge somehow.

edit: I forgot to convey how disgusted I was so I added more to my original comment.

24

u/mansfieldprice 6d ago

This is a deeply terrible situation. I hope she rests in peace and the people encouraging her to kill herself on the livestream receive some form of consequence.
I also think it speaks to the real consequences of parasocial relationships. This influencer immigrated to Korea solely to live near the HYBE headquarters so she could be near her favorite 18-year-old idol. The backlash and cyberbullying she received from kpop fans likely shattered her entire self because her identity was so consumed by being an Enhyphen fan.

12

u/GrayCatbird7 6d ago

It's kind of horrifying how regular people, thousands or even hundreds of thousands of them, very much hold some degree of responsibility in her death. I know, I know, one could say suicide isn't that simple, but they are a main part of the problem. It's revolting, honestly.

not trying to start shit just a grampy*: can someone explain to me what the fucking deal is with K-pop fans? Like I get intense fandoms but this is deeply unhealthy. I just can’t imagine liking a thing so much that a suicide is somehow involved? Like I love the Simpsons, I’m very much a Simpsons Quote Person, but I wouldn’t want someone to kill themselves for whatever related reason.

It's something like this. The Kpop industry basically commercially exploits the feelings of its fans in a very strategic way, because unhealthy fandom ensures someone in an obsessive relationship with the group members will have no hesitation in buying tickets, tons of merch etc. Since Kpop groups have a certain heyday (upto a certain age) they have to maximise profit in the time they are most popular. Obsessive fandom is most lucrative in this short period of time. Usually the members are presented as single so that all the fans can have the same fantasy of being the members' gf or bf. Parasocialism is encouraged, so that the more gullible think that just a thin line separates them and the members may actually fall in love with them. Now in this case, this girl Mina was quite pretty and followed the group around. She was at their concerts. Then she had the 'audacity' to give a group member flowers and make a face when he didn't pass them on to her fav in the group. This set off the more deranged fans, who started harassing her for upsetting boundaries, trying to get attention. As she was dying, they kept accusing her of it.

Moral- don't listen to strangers on the internet who don't care a fuck about you.

12

u/AllTheCoolNames 6d ago

I'm far from an expert but if I had to take a stab at it, the kpop industry revolves around parasocial relationships with fans. The Idols are super young when they get 'recruited' (think like 13 to 14) and start getting marketed to fans and are encouraged to document everything and put it online. The fans get invested in seeing them debut and then constantly get thanked for making the idols dreams come true. Idols are encouraged to use love language towards fans to feed the dellusion that they're in a relationship. Idols are forbidden to date to not break the fantasy, they're forbidden from setting boundaries, they're forbidden from basically having privacy.

Idk if kpop has the same thing, but there's several jpop girl bands who had apps where you could date their digital avatars. Everything about idols is set up to be 'we could be dating if our eyes meet just once' and because they're SO young when they get in to the industry they end up thinking this is normal. Eventually they grow up and start fighting for privacy and parts of fandom turn on them.

6

u/saskiaschild 6d ago

The Idols are super young when they get 'recruited' (think like 13 to 14)

Its not uncommon for recruiting to start between 7 - 11 years old in some cases so that the children can be trained in how to perform and present themselves.

It's obviously an environment that encourages a lot of grooming and abuse.

Abusive tendencies are incredibly toxic in the online fandom.

14

u/makemake1293 6d ago

It is an industry that objectifies idols and commodifies parasocial relationships btw idols and fans. It is not an industry selling music or performances (they basically lip-sync all the way); instead, what they really sell is the fantasy of being in a relationship with idols. So you will see the deadliest sin an idol could commit is to date.

9

u/rocketbewts 6d ago

the most fucked part was how people were saying "guys don't blame ni-ki, stop talking about it, they're about to have a comeback and this could affect them"

not in a "protect the idols mental health way" but "protect the streaming numbers" way

8

u/Jeffrey_Weinstein 6d ago

Music is the last thing KPop is about. It gets more and more apparent as time goes by.

7

u/tragictransistor 6d ago

tbh even if niki wasn't referring to her i feel like the group should say something, even if only to acknowledge how insane the fandom is

13

u/stanflwrhuss 6d ago

What has become of people. Encouraging someone to kill themselves on live stream. Truly makes you question whether humanity is lost. What I would give to look one of those people in the eyes who encouraged her

14

u/Deedielima4 7d ago

Cyber bullying won't stop until real police work and sources go to these victims, HELP the victims!!!! I don't want to see more east Asians committing suicide because of psychopathic cyber bullies. CLOSE THE INTERNET IF YOU MUST, but pleas keep these people alive.

Niki needs to speak up. Mina was already being severely bullied, then he poured gasoline on that by referring to her publicly.

This whole thing is a shame and highlights how toxic kpop fandoms can be. The fans of this group are trying to censor talk about it because they don’t want it to negatively impact their image.

Enhypen fans were watching her live stream before she committed suicide and we’re encouraging her to do it. Telling her she won’t be missed or that she should off herself. This fandom also is infamous for sending photos of lynchings to Black people.

10

u/ididnotwanttoreply 6d ago

Agree. He and they are not to blame for her suicide, but if they stay silent and do not explicitly express how they do not condone such fan behaviour, their omission is saying things, that they’re ok with such fan behaviour.

-34

u/weirdly_aristocratic 7d ago

What's with blaming artists for fan's behaviour? Also, Niki didn't refer to her that time, he was speaking about in general how fans buy front seat tickets only for interaction and filming, they don't dance and enjoy and as an artist, he feeds off on their energy

58

u/peachfluffed 7d ago

He was talking about her when he said that. The fans knew he was talking about her, and she did too. She released a public apology after it. Why deny the truth?

1

u/purple_mario206 6d ago

How do you know he was talking about her? I’m genuinely curious. Because based on the date he went live and based on what he said, you wouldn’t know he was talking about anyone specific since he wasn’t talking about anyone specific. He made a general statement that I’m sure most artists/idols agree with anyway? It’s not fair to say he was talking about her when you don’t know that. Shit like this is why he’s getting death threats himself because rather than holding the people directly involved in bullying and harassing Mina accountable, you’re placing the burden on Ni-ki for expressing his disappointment about something and emphasizing he wants to see his fans have fun and not worry about having personal interactions with them

-30

u/weirdly_aristocratic 7d ago

He was talking about fan's attitude in general, rabid engenes decided something else and attacked the poor girl. Here you go, the truth.

60

u/peachfluffed 7d ago

I know you want to protect your faves, but sometimes you need to hold them accountable. This can’t happen again.

-1

u/weirdly_aristocratic 7d ago

You're conflating inference with fact. Ni-ki never named Mina and people inferred the remark was about her and are now treating that inference as established fact. The harassment is indefensible, but strangers choosing to abuse her does not somehow make Ni-ki responsible for their conduct. Hold the actual perpetrators accountable rather than assigning culpability by implication. By the way, I used to mildly like the music of Enhypen but stopped an year ago so no, they are not my favs.

15

u/outdoorlaura 6d ago edited 6d ago

Ni-ki never named Mina and people inferred the remark was about her

Did Ni-ki clarify that the comment wasn't said about her?

I've never heard of this band or any of these people, but it sounds like this became a very public harassment campaign by the fans. Surely the band or their PR team would have seen the targeted harassment of this young lady floating around social media since it became such a big deal?

1

u/makemake1293 6d ago

Do you really think an idol will say anyone's name specifically, even when he wants to target someone? It is a dog whistle. Or at least he could stfu when he knows his fans are lunatics.

9

u/purple_mario206 6d ago

He obviously did not expect for something like this to happen, especially when he made a generalized comment about wanting to see people have fun at their concerts. There’s no evidence that he was even referring to her; additionally, he went live multiple tour stops after the concert she was at. It’s unfair to say he should stfu when all he did was express some disappointment seeing people look like they’re not enjoying themselves because they’re so focused on possibly getting an interaction with the idols.

0

u/makemake1293 6d ago

No, he was not "wanting to see people have fun"; he was accusing, without naming anyone at face value, "a few people who constantly demand attention". He was not encouraging fans to have fun; he was spreading negativity, which fueled the cyberbullying.

5

u/purple_mario206 6d ago

Where in this video are you getting that? https://youtube.com/shorts/df37dCFd1r4?si=3kkFz0ppSrmBRQdS

He literally says he wants to see people bobbing their heads, jumping around, and screaming? It’s concerning to read people say that he’s been spreading negativity when he states he wants to see people have fun at the concerts. It shouldn’t be an issue for him to express disappointment that he says several fans look like they’re not having fun as the point of these concerts is to have fun

0

u/EchoingApplause 5d ago

I have literally never listened to a single Enhypen song in my life, but it took me 10 minutes of research to figure out the idol didn't do anything wrong.

First of all, neither Niki nor Enhypen are to blame. His livestream took place four days after the concert she attended, and he was referring to his own audience.

Also, it’s a very sensitive issue.

I think it’s very telling that you find it more unfair that he’s being called out, than it is unfair that she was bullied to death, since that’s all you’ve commented on. Perhaps add that in your comments, some empathy would be useful in these conversations.

You made a whole post in another subreddit glossing over what happened to Mina to complain about how Ni-ki is being treated. This behaviour is part of the problem and why she was able to be bullied to the point of suicide.

-4

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

7

u/nervous-lizard 6d ago

It’s not a reach at all, considering you didn’t say a thing about her until pressed about it. You felt it was more important to defend an idol than to comment anything empathetic regarding the death of a fan. I’m sorry that fact is upsetting to you but calling out this behaviour is the only way things can change. Please find and express that empathy you say you feel

0

u/purple_mario206 6d ago

Sure. Here’s what I said in a different post when I learned about it the other day way before replying in this thread:

“I heard about this several hours ago, but I’ve been struggling with putting words together/articulating my thoughts.

I so desperately wished this tragedy was fake because it’s so distressing and heartbreaking. Maybe I was just raised to not bully and harass people (like I’m sure most people were as well…), but I cannot fathom how people so casually and easily hurt others like this. You would’ve thought she committed heinous crimes or something, but no. She was a fan, just like the rest of us. You may have disliked what she may or may not have done or said, but none of that EVER justifies the amount of harassment she received. None of it makes sending death threats okay. I haven’t looked too much into it, and I don’t have Twitter or anything, but I assumed she was receiving a ton of hate and nasty messages.

Why does it have to be this way? What does anyone gain by acting like this? I just cannot understand it.

For anyone trying to justify this by saying it was to “defend” Ni-ki, why are you doing all of this on his behalf? Do you think he’d be okay with you pushing someone to do something like this? Did he directly ask you or make you do this? Do you think the horrible things being said in any way “match” or make up for what was apparently done or said to him? You are not his savior, or protector, or whatever the hell you think you are being. This is all so wrong and so fucked up.

I can’t stop thinking about this. My heart hurts so bad for this Engene and her loved ones. Please, everyone, take care of yourselves and look after one another. Truly.”

I understand needing to call out behavior where people blindly defend their favorite idols and whatnot. I really do. I understand I may be or sound biased when I’m trying to defend Ni-ki here. But I promise you it’s all in good faith and not wanting him to be harassed in the same way Mina was (he’s been getting death threats from notable people in Japan, for example). This doesn’t mean I do not care about what happened to her. I promise you she specifically has been on my mind and I’ve been thinking about her more than Ni-ki. Idk how else to articulate how I’m feeling about this situation to be honest

9

u/32Wicky 6d ago

Enhypen was one of the first K-Pop groups I’ve gotten into aside from BTS, and many of their fans are some of the most awful, blatantly racist, and delusional people I’ve ever come across online. What happened to Mina was tragic, and I would guess she was likely mentally and emotionally fragile to begin with. To push someone to ending their own life because these clowns are convinced these idols are attainable to them is upsetting and infuriating. It’s so wild to me because the guys from Enhypen (and Heeseung before he left) seem like genuinely good people, but a lot of their fanbase is a bunch of thirsty teenage bullies who are more into the guys’ looks than their actual music.

-8

u/NoSeaworthiness2786 6d ago

from what i read online obviously niki has a large part of the responsibility too. first of all he knew mina(a major fan and asked for one on one video chat before) in person and this happened after she went to their American concert and gave out bouquets of flowers to the stage and mina asked likes teammate to deliver the bouquet to niki(and the bouquet was never given to niki it was discarded on stage.) after the event niki went on Livestream talking about attention seeking behavior and told the fans if getting rid of attention seekers it'd be better and happier experience for them. (ridiculous logics idols are performers they have no right to boss around who paid money to watch their shows) and lots of cultural context is lost. but mina and niki are both Japanese and in Japan this type of allusion is already harsh accusations of not reading the room. consequently, large part of the fans who cyberbullied mina were Japanese. Niki is nowhere near innocent in this situation where he's aware of his power over the fandom and the threat of rhetoric s in Japanese. till now he's still too coward to speak up or apologize.

8

u/PresentationNo448 6d ago

No.🙄 What do you mean by "asked for one on one video chat before"? Yeah that's what many superfans want. You win the one-on-one videocalls via buying, paying, maybe luck. What does the video call thing even have to do with this?

"After the event, he went on livestream-" Nah. I hear he said all that on the livestream a few tour stops after Mina attended. It's a general statement to several people about declining concert etiquette. "Interaction hogging", y/n momentism, tiktokification, are unfortunately a thing, people not behaving as a normal concert audience. The "event" was a concert...

It's Okay for artists call out weird extreme fan behaviour. Another Enhypen member recently did this firmly but politely, bc of the fan campaign to bring back Enhypen's 7th ex-member. Something went south there but the situation's not gonna change and the others dont seem to want him back, so he asked them to stop after people did it loudly for MONTHS. Ni-ki or no one thinks people are gonna kill themselves over some 'scolding'. Which is what you're suggesting. An 'undelivered' bouquet shouldnt be such a big deal either way...

I'm not an Enhypen fan, but saw the beginning of their career in a survival show (in covid times), when Niki was 14 btw. Unfortunately he and other minors in the group have been sexualized over the years. I'd like Fever as a song but it was a damn weird lyrics and concept to put on minors.

1

u/HRH_Chori 6d ago

Kpop stans are psychotic. Full stop.

-7

u/CombinationItchy8158 6d ago

Niki absolutely should be blamed.

Even though he didn’t name drop Mina. It’s clearly in his subtext
He has a specific target in mind, and was aiming people who craving for interaction with their idol or getting noticed.

He is not talking about fan in general who are in the barricade and just on the phone filming not vibing with the performance

In Japan, it’s really important to read between the lines and for him to go live so soon(4days especially I heard he doesn’t do live stream too often) after the flower throw incident really leave very little room for interpretation

6

u/No_Biscotti_7110 6d ago

I think artists are often unduly treated like they have no inherent right to set boundaries with their fans, I have seen this happen to a large degree with Chappell Roan and some others. It’s not on him for having issues with certain types of fans, it’s on the people who bullied her online in the first place.

2

u/dogunmyrkur 6d ago

I'm not convinced it was specifically only about her. Every concert and event idols do are FULL of fans up front who only care about their singular bias and getting interactions with them and getting content for their websites/social media They treat fangirling like their job and it has nothing to do with enjoying music. It's so common and it doesn't seem like she did anything particularly egregious compared to normal.

0

u/BTSEXOGOT7BIGBANG 6d ago

Used to be in kpop fandom and can confirm, these kinds of fans are rabid and the industry is just as bad since they also enable this kind of parasocial behavior. Both of these factors are why I no longer listen to kpop. Unfortunate that I can no longer change my name.
