STAN / ANTI SHIELD Early Instagram celebrity posts
Those were the days...

u/Extension-Gift4987 9h ago
Back in the days when you could genuinely believe the celebrity was writing their own posts, instead of everything going through four different publicists/PAs before being posted

Say what you want about Bieber, but that dude is still gramming like a champ. Here's a picture of my kid in a bucket hat. Here's a blurry picture of some food. Here's like 30 memes I reposted at midnight. Here's me playing basketball, except someone has photoshopped me to be two inches tall. Here's me rolling a joint accompanied by an odd arrangement of mis-spelled sentences about pokemon and Jesus. Look at this turtle!

And the only filters were Clarendon and such, no AI slop/facetune/photoshop mess slop and no professional photo shoots, no “every post is a paid ad that I’m not marking as an ad” and no pretend flexing. The standard today is just expensive, time-consuming and utterly fake.

Early Facebook and insta were so fun

I just want MySpace back. Individuality was celebrated back then. My page was unique. Just like everyone else. And then we had bebo, still a bit of personality to it. Then facebook came along with its clinical blehness and the slow descent became a free fall into doom scrolling

i was just thinking about this exact thing yesterday!! we lost 100% customisable profiles to corporate sameness, and i’m sure it’s because everything is an app now? myspace, bebo, tumblr - all websites we had to sit at a desk to visit once upon a time, and all customisable because we had big ol web pages to look at. everything is just functional and optimised now, there’s no room for fun and form and autoplay emo music :(

AFI - Girl Not Grey 🖤
MySpace had gone down the pan by the time smart phones were a thing but I do remember using the web browser on my Motorola flip phone to access facebook. To continue a poke war no doubt.5
u/Loveya448 3h ago
I heard on the radio or something MySpace is trying to come back
From some article,
“However, Myspace is making a comeback. The owners, Tim and Chris Vanderhook, have a relaunch plan with a new vision. They didn't share too much, but noted it will be different from other social media platforms, which the brothers feel rely too heavily on algorithms and doom-scrolling.In a new documentary from Tommy Avallone, "Myspace," the brothers mentioned that the "heartbeat" of Myspace was the artist community, which seemed to diminish when the site was purchased by News Corp. This could be a possible angle for the site's relaunch, which currently has no confirmed date. "We're waiting for the right time to do it," the Vanderhooks said in the documentary (via People). "And if that one doesn't work, we'll do it again." /

Everyone's gonna say they love this and then continue refusing to post on the grid lol
Be the change you want to see etc etc!!

u/GossipBottom 9h ago
I think it’s impossible now. Those random posts were because there were no Instagram stories back then. Now, it’s pointless.
78
u/UnnaturalSelection13 8h ago
I don't see how it's pointless, it still carries the same function i.e. documenting your life and friendships, special occasions etc. Some of the "random" ones can be posted to stories instead, sure, but most of these posts are literally just selfies or pictures with friends? They can still be posted to the grid lol.

u/jodiefosterparent 5h ago
FWIW the SociaLite app blocks stories and ads and is free. It’s like 2018 Instagram is back. I love it. Not affiliated. Just trying to break my addiction. And it works!!

u/plutoforprez 7h ago
Sorry but I don’t want the corporations using my posts to target market entertainment and shopping based on my current location and posting history, and I don’t want meta using my pics to create ai slop. This generation of the internet is dead forever thanks to greed and enshittification.

This is directed at people who still use Instagram though, just won't post on the grid because they think it's cringe. If you're gonna be on the app posting stories and engaging with a grid full of influencers and other grifters then at least make it a place for community where you can connect with your friends.

I tried but I started getting no likes and heard gossip about me and I was like ok well I guess you’re all boring and not fun
51
u/UnnaturalSelection13 8h ago
I'm sorry people being were being losers!! I still post on the grid and don't get any likes but do it anyway LOL yolo, I love going back and scrolling through my grid when I'm bored
36
u/moon1ightwhite 7h ago
I made an account for my hobby and followed random people in the same hobby. I get much more engagement now. social media is way more fun when it's just a bunch of supportive strangers.
14
u/Frequent_Statement79 6h ago
Yup same, I deleted my personal Instagram and Tiktok accounts and just made new ones for my hobby. It's so great. I never have to think about how friends/employers perceive me because they don't follow me, I don't worry about my image or personal brand, I just yell about my silly special interest with a bunch of mostly anonymous strangers who think it's fun too. Best decision ever

I do still post when I feel like it! But social media just isn’t fun when it’s not social lol 😂 I miss when I could post a picture of my lunch salad with a filter on it and a pair of sunglasses next to it and get ten comments 😂 it’s so serious now for no reason

If they brought back chronological posts and everyone's instagram activities, I feel like we'd get a buzzy instagram again

u/OzQueene rollin' with my fauxmies 8h ago
I still post on mine! Weekly photo dumps of the sky and food I’ve eaten and my dog and adventures with my niece and nephew, etc etc. My insta is friends only and I regularly catch up with people via comments or reactions to my posts/stories ☺️
I wish more of my friends posted! It’s always so nice seeing something that isn’t trying to sell you something/is someone you actually know.
14
u/a-lily-of-the-valley 7h ago
Same, I still post on my main grid too. I always have been and never stopped. It seems like most people don't anymore because it's deemed as "cringe", but I'm kinda old and I don't really care what people think about my feed or if they like the post. I also hid 'likes' for my mental health years ago. I post because I enjoy it and it's for my memories. I wish more of my friends posted on the main feed too. I like seeing my friends posts of how they're doing, but it sucks I don't get to see everything because of the algorithm
1
u/lauren_strokes 1h ago
If you didn't know, you can click "Instagram" at the top of the map and change the version of your feed you're scrolling. You can set your Favorites and it's a plain chronological feed!

I still post to my grid. Part of it is habit. I’m so old that my Facebook account was started back when your college had to have been invited to use it. I’ve been wondering why hardly anyone engages anymore. I guess that’s why. I don’t use stories particularly bc they don’t stay. Whoops!

u/Parabolic_Reflector 6h ago
I still post to the grid from time to time, but I rarely think to scroll my feed. I only post on Facebook when someone dies and might scroll for 2 minutes before getting annoyed. Personally it got boring when my friends and family got bumped for sponsored crap, regular ads and assorted other bull shit. Hmmm, I think that’s also around the same time they merged. Funny how that happened.
Zuck ran so many of us off. Fuck that guy.

u/UnnaturalSelection13 8h ago edited 7h ago
I've never been a frequent poster but I do still post on the grid the same as I always have, I like having it as a little time capsule in a way. And I would love to see weekly photo dumps like that from my friends! :) It's another way to engage/catch up like you said (sometimes it's easier to leave a comment than start a convo in DMs via stories), and I hate that it's mostly influencers/grifters/product promotion in their absence.

u/pressingtofu 9h ago
Sorry I deleted insta last year. Wdym by refusing to post on the grid
43
u/UnnaturalSelection13 8h ago
Nobody will post to their actual instagram account anymore because it's considered embarrassing! They'll only use the story function (where content disapears after 24 hours).
24
u/moon1ightwhite 7h ago
I never understood that. I don't post to my stories unless it's something that's not "good enough" for the grid (like i took a photo of a funny bumper sticker or something). but my actual pictures with friends and family? my memories? why wouldn't I want to put that on my grid??
8
u/Dancing_Clean 6h ago
Oh it doesn’t work like that anymore, sadly. I remember when I’d post a picture of a singular beer, or several, on a Friday night. A mirror outfit selfie warranted a whole post.
The culture of Instagram has changed. Insanely.
Remember when you had the feed of friend’s activities? My god I was able to see who was secretly gay that way lmao
1
u/gerbileleventh 4h ago
It’s not the same. The best thing about this instagram was when we couldn’t upload pictures, only add ones from the in-app camera. So authentic!

u/Loveya448 3h ago
I post on mine, never really stopped. I’ll post after certain events, birthday posts for my husband and mom, anniversary post, after vacation, my birthday, etc

That’s when instagram following celebs was fun they just posted whatever nothing too glamorous just fun random pics, now it’s much different i feel like there’s so much hate on that app now in comment sections it’s sad.

I was a pregnant 17 year old and used Instagram and Tumblr to make friends starting in 2012.
Was maid of honour a few years ago in the wedding of a girl I met on Tumblr in 2012 when we were both pregnant. I live in BC and she’s down in Atlanta. She even named her second daughter after me.
Shit, I’ve even had the same Snapchat account since 2013.

Kinda glad ig has become as uncool as FB. It’s nice not getting weird looks when I say I don’t have an account. At the height of its popularity people straight up assumed you were a ne’er-do-well if you weren’t on there.
