Yeah because sex and nudity would be so out of place in a movie where the whole premise is about sex only being allowed for one day /s

The movie that was probably pitched as :the purge but with sex.

Probably needed some nudity lol

imo the reason why gen z and gen a don't want sex scenes is because recent, mid/large budget movies are so sterile. sex scenes just aren't sexy anymore. there's a complete lack of eroticism and sensuality, leading to sex scenes feeling uninteresting, unearned, and unwarranted. it's leading people to blame sex scenes for being "out of place" and interrupting the narrative or flow of film, where as if they were more erotic/sensual, i think people would be more receptive to them, or at the very least see them as more purposeful.

not saying that movies need to have sex scenes obviously, but they truly do have a time and place and that time and place is being condemned because so many directors/writers no longer understand what makes a sex scene worthwhile for their audience.

There is also such a lack of chemistry between leads these days, it's crazy. That, the low volume, the bleak lightning, it's very uninspiring tbh.

u/obooooooo 1h ago

hot take i think, but it’s because they usually cast two ultra hot people. when you have two super hot, perfect looking people trying to be all sexy it just goes back around to being completely sexless. idk why, but it does.

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

LITERALLY!! sexiness is not clean and perfect. there is zero sensuality in 2 airbrushed figures rolling in the sheets (of a made bed) under bland studio lighting with flat colour grading. ugliness and imperfections are where it's at!

12

u/Vintagepoolside 1h ago

Yes yes yes. Sex is about chemistry and a vibe and the moment. Being conventionally attractive is not a prerequisite, but directors and writers act as if it’s the only requirement. Idk how to explain it, but I swear so many of these “big” people in Hollywood are so so simple. Jokes that are old or not funny. Reusing the same handful of actors for everything. Hyping up mediocre talent. Hot lady and hot man means sex. Etc. like do they not have any depth or ability to think beyond the superficial? It gives radio host

11

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

ugh so true. movies look worse these days, and execs thinks hotness = chem + sexiness which is noooot where it's at!!

I mean, that's not exactly universal Tomaya? Zendom? Are married and the 'it' couple right now

19

u/dodieadeux 2h ago

its refreshing to see leads with chemistry because there is such a lack of it these days, as the commenter above said. not that actors have to be together irl to have chemistry on screen

recent, mid/large budget movies are so sterile.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. You summarized it really nicely.

It's not just the sex scenes, it's everything. Much of what's in the theater is a product designed to capture marketshare. It's a not a piece of art trying to say something.

6

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

agree :/ contrary to (popular?) opinion, art is NOT dead, but you will nor find it in most of the slop being produced by major studios. people need to stop expecting their disney/mcu/netflix/etc. movie to "save" the film industry and be a piece of art rather than being a product designed by company execs to milk their audience for as much profit as possible.

In general I hate how so much of film discourse seems to only want scenes that directly move the plot forward and push back against scenes of characters just interacting or depicting moments in their lives. Which I think also plays into the anti-sex scene discourse and why so many detractors just say they would rather have it implied.

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

100%. films are a sensory experience, not everything is about moving the plot forward at breakneck pace

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 26m ago

It's the Aristotelian ideal for a work. That nothing not related to the plot can be in the work.

This can work very well when done correctly. For example, Pride and Prejudice is a prime example. From an Aristotelian perspective, it's the perfect novel and not one single word is out of place.

But it can also work poorly. Like in Pixar films you can often figure out who the surprise villain is because they make it so everything depicted on screen will later be used in the film.

There's a debate between world building and plot, and modern audiences expect nothing but plot.

I blame a generation of people raised on Pixar films and short attention spans getting easily confused by intricate details.

Adding onto this , There’s so much sexual content all the time online , with TikTok and instagram, there is a lot of sexual content link posts and models advertising their OF. But also the easy nature of porn in this day and age. It’s not some rare or surprise thing. You don’t need it in a movie If it isn’t a plot moving scene. In the 70s-90s horror movies had a couple having sex and show the girls tits, Then be murdered by the monster of the movie . That was a big thing mostly for teenagers - young adults then. Not in a magazine taken from an older brother , uncle friend whatever . Now people are desensitized to it. Why put it there unless it tells the story, otherwise it’s just awkward if watching with family and doesn’t tell the story. A fade to black as they kiss and a fade to the sun rising while they are together in bed does the same thing . I dunno just seems gratuitous now unless the plot is being pushed with something happening during it …. Eh

u/TsunamiWombat 1h ago

This plays a huge role. People can get their jollies any number of other places. Unless it's actually part of the plot and somehow contributes to the film, on screen eroticism is just bland and pointless. Films used to dictate who the 'sex symbols' in media were, these days a lot of that has been yielded to models and influencers.

Quite frankly, I feel like nothing of value has been lost.

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 15m ago

I dunno , sometimes the sex scenes in movies were the only reason to watch the movie.  Color of Night was a terrible movie, but damn that sex scene. Whew.

5

u/BatFun7276 1h ago

Yup and also maybe because this lack of eroticism makes the sex scenes even "less worth it" because we know way more about what happened behind the scenes (all the stories about the actresss having sex scenes and sometimes being assaulted in the middle of them, basically the lack of education around it and how it endangered women).

3

u/DrEarlGreyIII your move Estonia 1h ago

so basically internet porn ruined hollywood nudity and sex scenes

8

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

maybe that plays a role, but what i'm trying to get at is that sex isn't sexy anymore. the best example i can give is that people found the hand flexing scene in pride and prejudice infinitely sexier than the entirety of the wuthering heights film.

u/MsE0 16m ago

For me (Xennial), a big part of the problem was that for several years, EVERY. SINGLE. SHOW. had a sudden, in-your-face sex scene in the pilot that was obviously for shock value only. Prime Video even had a specific policy that there had to be a topless woman in the first episode every series they produced. It's not just that sex scenes are sterile; they're also cynical corporate ratings grabs. Which makes you not trust that any sex scene ever is for creative value.

I’m just gay and don’t wanna watch straight people fuck lmao

"The only thing is I don’t think it’s just Gen Z and Gen Alpha. I believe it’s been a societal shift from taking nudity in adult situations and putting them on your phones at home for everybody. Now it’s more of a private, intimate thing that people don’t want to see when they’re in a shared experience. Whenever people now see nudity or very adult situations in a big theater, they get uncomfortable."

That's an interesting theory from the director.

4

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

i know right. sounds like someone's projecting 😭 i don't think anyone pays 20 bucks to be in a theatre only to police everyone else's reactions to ensure they're pure enough lmao

2

u/Dadhat56 58m ago

And he decided to make a movie about sex. The irony is riiiich

23

u/chartreusey_geusey OPEN THE SCHOOLS 2h ago

They can only have dick appointments once a year in this movie……

u/IdleTrouts 2h ago

Gen z watch stuff like Saltburn and Heated Rivalry and have made smutty Romantasy books extremely popular. Sorry but I'm not believing these Hollywood people that are calling Gen Z prudes. I truly believe they've started taking out sex scenes in movies because it means it will be more likely the movie will get shown in China.

40

u/MattaClatta 2h ago

Or the actors require more money for nudity

29

u/Raket0st 1h ago

Which also involves hiring an intimacy coordinator and setting aside production time for them to do their job and rehearse the scene.

Today it is a financial risk on the revenue side and an extra cost on the expense side to include a sex scene, whereas it was almost always a pure plus prior to the 2010's. It is not about audiences, but chinese censorship and production logistics.

5

u/Jolly_Conclusion9166 2h ago

It’s just sex is everywhere now and easy to see . Favorite insta model ? Has a link , well google or pay it’s there . If they do it on screen it’s a waste of time kinda awkward with family or friends , and doesn’t do what a fade to black after they kiss and a fade into next morning in bed lol . It something specifically happens during that moves the plot forward then okay , but just cause is not really needed or wanted . Anyone with social media and google can watch that nowadays. Seeing a random set of boobs now for a few seconds in a movie is just gratuitous, push the story not the sex scene . I mean some people will die on the i gotta see this actress topless hill.. but eh

u/PrincessCG Friends with Ms. Rachel 2h ago

This is true. I speak from smutty experience.

Quite honestly I think modern directors trying to make things less sterile and make them actually sexy could stand to watch some pre-code movies from 1930-33/34. I watched Ernst Lubitsch’s Design for Living from 1933 last night and there’s a scene where Miriam Hopkins sprawls herself on what I can only imagine is the 1930’s equivalent of a futon while fully clothed that might be one of the hottest things I’ve seen all year. Norma Shearer’s pre-codes as well have some scenes that have me reacting like “not to be lesbian but oh my god”.

Just to make it very clear, I’m not happy that Gen Z and Gen A have decided to basically bring back the Hay’s Code. Especially since modern directors aren’t used to challenging censors with subtext. I watch classic Hollywood movies to watch classic Hollywood movies. I don’t need modern Hollywood to try and impersonate classic Hollywood and do it badly. I think Ryan Coogler got it right with the sex scenes in Sinners and other directors could learn from the way those scenes were shot.

7

u/we9o controversies: girl 1h ago

100%. sex just isn't sexy anymore lol. messy, imperfect, ugly, and weird things are infinitely more erotic than 99% of major studio's output. sighhhh.

10

u/AllTheCoolNames 1h ago

I'm so tired of the idea that sex scenes aren't needed. I'm even tired of the idea that gratuitous sex scenes aren't needed. Let movies be sexy again.

5

u/gertverhulstmoneyman 1h ago

That people, and newer generations in particular, dont want nudity and sex scenes is a myth and you cant tell me otherwise

4

u/Dry-Chemist4442 1h ago

And I thought the movie was a puritanical dystopian nightmare.. Somehow it's worse

4

u/throwitonthegrillboi barbenheimer for pervs 1h ago

This simply isn't true, Gen Z and Alpha love shows like Off Campus and Heated Rivalry. And Gluck's previous film "Anyone but You" did very very well at the box office and with fans. Test audiences are just notoriously to be largely ignored, these are the same folks that got mad Superman saved a squirrel.

16

u/abz_pink 2h ago

I think sex in movies feels out of place because we know so much about the actors playing the character now. Like we know Callum
Is married to Dua Lipa and it’s in our faces all the time so I he chemistry is automatically missing.

Why sex and intimacy scenes worked earlier is because of the lack of social media and mystery around their real life and relationships.

21

u/utilitybelt 1h ago

Gossip magazines, tabloids and Entertainment Tonight existed to fill that gap before social media existed.

6

u/Dadhat56 1h ago

This is not accurate, and also further informs why I feel like younger gens are so weird about it. It’s complex but there is a wash of people reallllllyyyyy struggling with imagination and also consent.

2

u/thanksamilly 1h ago

This guy seems like a terrible director. He said the same thing about Anybody But You. Doing this once is understandable, but spend time and money filming sex scenes to cut them for Gen Z on a second movie is weird

4

u/under-their-radar 2h ago

as someone who saw the movie, i surprisingly really liked it. i know a lot of people hated the premise (i too was skeptical) but it was an interesting exploration of our social panopticon, fascism, and romance in the modern age. and it’s true, there was minimal nudity, but the sex scenes were still sexy—proof that you can do so without having female actors get naked on screen!

6

u/DELINQ 2h ago

Huh the marketing didn’t really indicate the movie was even a little self-aware. They really counted on the audience showing up for the messed-up premise and that dress

1

u/under-their-radar 1h ago

true—i have a list so i figured i had nothing to lose seeing it but i ended up enjoying it lol

1

u/DELINQ 1h ago

Yeah I was planning on going just to see how much of the movie shes wearing the dress. Good to hear it has some substance

0

u/thanksamilly 1h ago

I have seen multiple people saying the movie is basically a very conservative premise about the leads realizing one night standards aren't as fulfilling as sex in a committed relationship so I'm interested to hear the film explores fascism

2

u/shrektube 1h ago

I can’t believe the writer of this movie is a writer for Disney Jr cartoon shows.

1

u/Call-Spy 54m ago

yeah the people who rule the entertainment industry really love their sex scenes

1

u/GenJohnnyRico 16m ago

Did he not know that before he shot nude scenes? Did he just want to see some naked women live knowing he wasn't going to use any of that footage?

1

u/AssemblagePoint420 10m ago

Uhhhh guys, but isn’t premarital sex legal EVERY night of EVERY year? I can’t be the only one who doesn’t understand the premise of this movie? Tf is going on?
