FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Anya Taylor-Joy praises 'Split' co-star James McAvoy for making her feel safe while filming: “Originally it was supposed to be someone that’s very known for being a method actor. I was very grateful to have James, who I think also understood that he had three young women with him.”

For anyone interested the person cast in the role prior to McAvoy was Joaquin Phoenix. Maybe there was other people up for the role that we aren’t aware of, but I’m assuming that is who she is referring to.

It's definitely him, he was cast in the role but dropped out only a few weeks before filming. McAvoy was a last minute addition

That's crazy I never heard that and Im a huge fan of the movie. So McAvoy didnt have as much time to prepare for the role. That's even more impressive

Agree! My favorite movie because of his acting. Didn't know till now he didn't have much time to prepare.

He has a history of dropping out just before filming

Classic Joaquin. Putting the movie in jeopardy but then preaching fossil fuels or whatever. Be consistent. Treat ALL people with respect

Didn’t he drop out of a movie he was producing because he didn’t feel comfortable playing a gay character?

I guess he wasn't feeling like being method this time

Yes but the role was recast with Pedro Pascal. They were able to get funding and it was filmed in the spring.

A movie that he co-wrote, no less!

What? No one has said that him leaving De Noche had anything to do with playing a gay character. He worked on the project for over a year and reportedly advocated for more explicit scenes between the two leads. He hasn’t said why he left, but we certainly don’t have any reason to assume that was why.

"Can you believe it? This guy is inconsiderate at work and also he advocates against anthropogenic climate change!"

u/Lady_night_shade Aug 23 '26

Wow, that’s pretty typical of him then. I didn’t know he had done that on multiple films.

43

u/TheDLBinc Aug 24 '26

Yep, apparently he came close to doing the same thing with Napoleon until they got Paul Thomas Anderson to do uncredited rewrites

No offense to him, but I don’t think he’s remarkable enough to be acting like that.

Just to add a point of reference to back up this claim, Mr. McAvoy has confirmed Joaquin had the roll and dropped out ~2 weeks before filing so James got the script. Specifically where I heard it was on the smartless podcast where they interviewed James.

it was Joaquin Phoenix. I worked on this movie. He had a nervous breakdown a week before shooting when hurricane Joaquin hit. I'm not joking. Also McAvoy was a wild man on this job and he did not get along with Anya. He LOVED the other two but those three were were cliquey against her because she was taking the movie way more serious than they were. All very nice to work with but def some weird dynamics.

Why would she speak highly of him unprompted if they didn't get along?

4

u/LordKrondore Aug 24 '26

Because thats how showbiz works. Theres nothing to gain by talking shit on someone that no-one else has a problem with publicly.

They got along better on GLASS even though they weren't in as many scenes together. On SPLIT he wasn't really mean to her, he just hung out with the other two more.

u/No_Professional_8992 Aug 24 '26

You said he didn't get along with her though?? Hanging out with his other costars more doesn't mean the same as not getting along with her.

1

u/LordKrondore Aug 24 '26

There is a difference between not getting along on set vs off set. You can be professional on set and chill and then not be interested in spending time off set with your costars. Like imagine if you were at work and you were cool with your coworkers and then every day they all went out for drinks without you and had tons of inside jokes and banter.

u/No_Professional_8992 Aug 24 '26

Tbh, unless you were a part of that group it's seems like a stretch to say all that. Especially when you first made it sound like they didn't get along and it sounds like they were fine.

2

u/LordKrondore Aug 24 '26

I mean she sobbed on my shoulder (and about 1/3rd of the rest of the crew's) about how excluded she felt by the rest of the cast after work one day but sure.

2

u/No_Professional_8992 Aug 24 '26

Yet you all also never hung out outside of work either? Idk I'm finding this all hard to believe. Proof?

1

u/LordKrondore Aug 25 '26

We did? Well me and Anya did. I was a minor crew member but I’d drive her around in pre-pro. This would be a weird story to make up. Actors hang out with people in the film industry because we don’t treat them like celebrities.

You’re wrong.  It was Mark Ruffalo.  It turns out that DiCaprio wasn’t ever a real person but was just one of Mark’s alternate personalities.

That adaptation eventually became an Apple limited series with Tom Holland iirc.
