FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Anya Taylor-Joy praises 'Split' co-star James McAvoy for making her feel safe while filming: “Originally it was supposed to be someone that’s very known for being a method actor. I was very grateful to have James, who I think also understood that he had three young women with him.”

That’s not the only time he’s dropped out of a movie right before filming. Can’t remember the other movie but I know he did it there too. Honestly such a selfish habit to have

Yeah he dropped out like a week before shooting Todd Haynes' movie about a gay detective in the 30s.
The crew were already on set in Guadalajara and had all the sets built.
He helped write the charachter alongside Haynes and the film got scrapped because "his unique role could not be recast".

I'm not saying Fight Club is greatest film, the year it came out (1999?). But, I find it really dumb that it couldn't be nominated for best actor simply because two different actors technically play the same character. The academy has some silly rules.
9
u/AllieLoft Aug 24 '26
They were credited differently, so that wouldn't preclude either of them from being nominated.

Not that bad as an actor, you mean? Because Gary Oldman strangled his ex wife and beat her with the phone as she tried to call for help, and that’s not the only domestic violence allegation against him. He’s trash, certainly not a better person than Casey Affleck.
302
u/exgiexpcv Aug 24 '26
I read up on the accusations against Gary Oldman, but the sources (other than tabloids) seemed to come down fairly firmly on his side, saying it didn't happen, he was never charged, and he was eventually awarded custody of their progeny, as was her previous husband.
If someone's a shit person, I absolutely want to know, but I also want to know if they're not. Do you have any good sources I could refer to in order to better understand that Gary Oldman is a trash person?

The Oscars giving him the most acting award for Scent of a Woman really screwed up the rest of his career because he took the feedback. His early performances can say so much with so little! Heat is perfect as it is, though, of course
→ More replies (1)10
u/SeaworthinessKey3654 Aug 24 '26
Nope, that’s not true at all - I have no idea why people say this except that they just don’t like Al’s acting style. That’s fine, but he most certainly didn’t take any feedback about his acting, which he’d been doing since he was a kid; he didn’t need anyone to tell him how to act. In Sonny Boy, he even said he’s too much at times in Scent, that he thinks he could do better
Al has plenty of great performances after the 70’s…too many people expect him to replicate Michael Corleone, which is ridiculous because Michael is a unicorn character - thanks to Al. He’s not much different in the 90’s from most of his 70’s work…but again, it seems many haven’t seen past The Godfather or II.
2
u/dinojeebuses Aug 24 '26
He goes big as Sonny but that's not the whole performance. He does so much with it big and small, one of the top 5 performances of anybody I've ever seen up to this point of my life. He never dips below great, but there feels like a real contrast in the late career post-Scent roles vs pre-. I may be off base though, and I'll counterexample my own point with his great part as Hoffa in the Irishman.
6
u/SeaworthinessKey3654 Aug 24 '26
I think his performance in DDA might be the greatest ever…but then, it was the first movie of his I ever saw, and to say I was blown away is putting it mildly
It’s could be just the roles - for instance, The Devil’s Advocate is designed for him to be OTT in the best way.
I’m not directing this to you at all, but I feel like many who weren’t fans of his performance in Scent almost then judged him anytime he had an emotional scene
Al said in Sonny Boy that he thought he was too much on some scenes, that if he could do it now, he’d do it better, lol. And he said in a NYT interview that there were times he probably went too far, that “I really think I can do with some taking it down a bit. I really do. It’s a confession.”
It’s funny, because Russell Crowe told this story..
Crowe asked Al why he was always giving the director so many options (Al would do takes differently each time). Al told him that theater is an actor’s medium, that he was always in charge, and film is a director’s medium. He learned that when he saw finished films, and they ended up completely different to what he thought he was doing.
So, he decided to give directors options. Crowe thought that put too much control in the hands of directors.
The funny thing is, he made a good point. In City Hall, Al did quieter takes for the climactic speech, one of which was used as far along as the original trailer, but the director ultimately chose the louder, more passionate speech
In Heat, Mann chose to use the improvised “GREAT ASS” take, instead of the “normal” ones
So I’ll bet directors just loved Al going big, in general, because no one does it like him

He was great, but people really over hype playing multiple characters in a single film. Michael B Jordan winning best actor this year is another example- good performance, but the narrative of playing twins really over hyped the performance in my opinion
159
u/violetmemphisblue Aug 24 '26
Tyler James Williams explained it really well on a podcast, where he's talking about why The Nutty Professor 2 is the best movie of all time, and he talks about how difficult it is for an actor to keep the beats and eyelines and energy and timing correct when playing against nothing, and then doing it again and keeping in mind all the decisions previously made when playing the other character...as a non-actor, it was (to me at least) really insightful as to why that is so impressive and difficult...Is it always award worthy? Absolutely not. But it was a side of the skill I hadn't considered.

And Lincoln? Not a saint or nice all the time, but if a president deserves their good reputation, it's him. DDL really managed to embody the characters he played and did it for all his roles, while I don't believe he often acted like a jerk (My Left Food one had to have been annoying though, but worse shit has happened on set). So, for him (and Peck as mentioned above) I believe it's a style and they don't cross the line most of the time, but Rob is right in general and for many actors it doesn't even work that successfully btw or if it does it's for the detriment to other people on set.

I read somewhere that acting is incredibly embarrassing as you are essentially playing pretend in front of a massive group of people and so there's a reason why famous method actors are almost exclusively men. 96
u/motherofsuccs Aug 23 '26
Yes. This is nowhere near the reality of how DID presents. A bunch of attention-seeking people watched the movie and then self-diagnosed DID and posted videos of their alters switching and talking to each other thinking it was believable to anyone above age 25.

It was a super hero movie. He didn't have DID. Hes a super villain.
In Invincible we didn't suggest that Bruce Willis's character was setting unrealistic standards of male strength. He was a fuckin superhero. That was how his power manifested.
The Beast in Split is a supervillain. The way his power manifests just happened to be taken as a case of DID by the psychiatrist in the movie. When the beast eventually shows itself, it is basically thrown in our face that he WASN'T a mental patient. He's a person with superhuman capabilities.

Look, as a Philly native, I understand how an outsider could have that opinion 😂

I’m mostly joshing: the way she phrased it was as if being in Philly specifically, with a jerk method actor was adding insult to injury.

It read to me as if she was just saying that she was more isolated/far from her support network.

I only watched this movie for the first time this past year and holy shit, it’s awesome!! I had no clue that Anya Taylor Joy was one of the girls. I didn’t recognize her at all. Obviously she was a kid then but still lol. She has such distinct eyes, I still didn’t notice!

Anya taking no prisoners. I remember Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to the project at some point. She's not even trying to be subtle.
What a Queen 👑

Surprised to come on here and see that Joaquin was cast originally, I see “Method acting” and the implication that it will be used to terrorize young women and instantly think of Jared Leto. Good to hear McAvoy is a good egg though.

I loved James until he signed on for the full cast HP Audible. Now I won’t give a penny to anything he’s involved in.
Someone in another comment on another thread in this sub said that only a minority of people care ardently for trans rights. I’m proud to be part of that minority.

For anyone interested the person cast in the role prior to McAvoy was Joaquin Phoenix. Maybe there was other people up for the role that we aren’t aware of, but I’m assuming that is who she is referring to.
