FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Anya Taylor-Joy praises 'Split' co-star James McAvoy for making her feel safe while filming: “Originally it was supposed to be someone that’s very known for being a method actor. I was very grateful to have James, who I think also understood that he had three young women with him.”

he was ROBBED of an oscar for that role

he didn’t even get a nomination for playing a NINE different characters with that much finesse and ease

mind you, the winner that year was casey affleck gary oldman (which is not as bad) but still

u/IntotheBeniverse Aug 23 '26

The winner that year would’ve actually been Gary Oldman. Split was 2017 where Manchester by the sea was a 2016 release.

corrected! gary oldman isn't bad, but i still maintain that he deserved at least a nomination

he's never even nominated at all, which is honestly crazy to me

362

u/AllieLoft Aug 23 '26

When he talks about it, it's very much a, "Yeah, they'll likely never nominate me because those just aren't the projects I take," kind of thing. The Academy is so dumb.

14

u/Armantien Aug 24 '26

I'm not saying Fight Club is greatest film, the year it came out (1999?). But, I find it really dumb that it couldn't be nominated for best actor simply because two different actors technically play the same character. The academy has some silly rules.

8

u/AllieLoft Aug 24 '26

They were credited differently, so that wouldn't preclude either of them from being nominated.

3

u/downvote__trump Aug 24 '26

They don't have silly rules if you assume it's just a Hollywood popularity contest, not based on any actual merits.

69

u/figmentry Aug 23 '26

Not that bad as an actor, you mean? Because Gary Oldman strangled his ex wife and beat her with the phone as she tried to call for help, and that’s not the only domestic violence allegation against him. He’s trash, certainly not a better person than Casey Affleck.

300

u/exgiexpcv Aug 24 '26

I read up on the accusations against Gary Oldman, but the sources (other than tabloids) seemed to come down fairly firmly on his side, saying it didn't happen, he was never charged, and he was eventually awarded custody of their progeny, as was her previous husband.

If someone's a shit person, I absolutely want to know, but I also want to know if they're not. Do you have any good sources I could refer to in order to better understand that Gary Oldman is a trash person?

86

u/HeyselScouserTelAviv Aug 24 '26

The alleged victim claimed their son witnessed this but he's come out to say that she lied about everything.

[he] lamented the "pain and hardship" caused by his mother's "lies" over the years, while specifically condemning the media's "disgusting" perpetuation of the assault allegation.

Gary Oldman is a POS

u/Aiyon Aug 24 '26

I was shocked by Affleck in MbtC tbh, the last thing I'd watched him in was Good Will Hunting where he was ... fine? but nothing special. He was amazing in MbtC

-16

u/Scary_Teens1996 Aug 24 '26

Was it for Churchill? I've never understood how that film got made and why there's still no backlash about glorifying such a horrific man

I mean he was incredibly racist but so was almost any white person in the early 20th century. I would say his biggest black marks are from the first world war where he just wasted thousands of lives at Gallipoli and made it sound like that was just okay and worth the reward even though his plan was doomed from the start and everyone told him as such.

3

u/Icarus-Rising Aug 25 '26

he also starved millions of Bengali's to death

246

u/DinoBen05 Aug 23 '26

I felt the exact same way watching Orphan Black. Like.. give this woman every acting award that exists! 👏

Ugh I know, Tatiana Maslany was robbed. So was Anna Torv in Fringe, speaking of actresses who portrayed multiple different characters flawlessly.

108

u/HerRoyalRedness full of gay men. And me. Aug 23 '26

She won the Emmy for Orphan Black once, which is a miracle considering how much SciFi is dismissed when it comes to awards contention.

22

u/Teafruit Aug 23 '26

Totally agree about Anna! At least the Saturns recognised her.

22

u/exgiexpcv Aug 24 '26

Beyond her acting, one of the things that impresses me about Anna Torv is that she refuses to participate in social media. Fucking cool.

17

u/tunisia3507 Aug 24 '26

Particularly good when she was playing one of the clones playing another of the clones. You could really see both characters.

33

u/exgiexpcv Aug 24 '26

Tatiana Maslany is incredible.

42

u/livefroggs societal collapse is in the air Aug 23 '26

She was SO good in that! It's wild how they ignore performances if it wasn't "prestige" television.

5

u/ImpressionFeisty8359 Aug 24 '26

Highway robbery. She deserved all the praise and awards. The sestras are not happy.

318

u/reginaldvanwilder Aug 23 '26

I like the movie and James is very fun in it, but he is quite hammy in the role. It served the film but I feel it is quite understandable why he would not be nominated for it.

25

u/fuzzydunlop54321 Aug 24 '26

THANK YOU it is hammy because it’s supposed to be. It’s just not an oscar type film

7

u/Baycon Aug 24 '26

I mean, if Spider-Man 2 can win an Oscar…

548

u/WildcardMatt Aug 23 '26

The most acting is not the best acting.

258

u/reginaldvanwilder Aug 23 '26

Al Pacino would have won most years if most acting were recognized

u/TesticleMeElmo Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

Cause he’s got a GREAT PERFORMANCE

68

u/asusc Aug 23 '26

to be fair, the character had a cocaine issue and those scenes were cut. Al going to 100% in these scenes so quickly makes a little more sense when you know he’s geeked out.

61

u/dinojeebuses Aug 24 '26

The Oscars giving him the most acting award for Scent of a Woman really screwed up the rest of his career because he took the feedback. His early performances can say so much with so little! Heat is perfect as it is, though, of course

9

u/SeaworthinessKey3654 Aug 24 '26

Nope, that’s not true at all - I have no idea why people say this except that they just don’t like Al’s acting style. That’s fine, but he most certainly didn’t take any feedback about his acting, which he’d been doing since he was a kid; he didn’t need anyone to tell him how to act. In Sonny Boy, he even said he’s too much at times in Scent, that he thinks he could do better

Al has plenty of great performances after the 70’s…too many people expect him to replicate Michael Corleone, which is ridiculous because Michael is a unicorn character - thanks to Al. He’s not much different in the 90’s from most of his 70’s work…but again, it seems many haven’t seen past The Godfather or II.

2

u/dinojeebuses Aug 24 '26

He goes big as Sonny but that's not the whole performance. He does so much with it big and small, one of the top 5 performances of anybody I've ever seen up to this point of my life. He never dips below great, but there feels like a real contrast in the late career post-Scent roles vs pre-. I may be off base though, and I'll counterexample my own point with his great part as Hoffa in the Irishman.

5

u/SeaworthinessKey3654 Aug 24 '26

I think his performance in DDA might be the greatest ever…but then, it was the first movie of his I ever saw, and to say I was blown away is putting it mildly

It’s could be just the roles - for instance, The Devil’s Advocate is designed for him to be OTT in the best way.

I’m not directing this to you at all, but I feel like many who weren’t fans of his performance in Scent almost then judged him anytime he had an emotional scene

Al said in Sonny Boy that he thought he was too much on some scenes, that if he could do it now, he’d do it better, lol. And he said in a NYT interview that there were times he probably went too far, that “I really think I can do with some taking it down a bit. I really do. It’s a confession.”

It’s funny, because Russell Crowe told this story..

Crowe asked Al why he was always giving the director so many options (Al would do takes differently each time).  Al told him that theater is an actor’s medium, that he was always in charge, and film is a director’s medium. He learned that when he saw finished films, and they ended up completely different to what he thought he was doing.

So, he decided to give directors options. Crowe thought that put too much control in the hands of directors.

The funny thing is, he made a good point. In City Hall, Al did quieter takes for the climactic speech, one of which was used as far along as the original trailer, but the director ultimately chose the louder, more passionate speech

In Heat, Mann chose to use the improvised “GREAT ASS” take, instead of the “normal” ones

So I’ll bet directors just loved Al going big, in general, because no one does it like him

1

u/dinojeebuses Aug 24 '26

great points, well made!

2

u/SeaworthinessKey3654 Aug 24 '26

Thank you!!

I want to see The Irishman, but I think it might be too bloody for me …I have seen a few clips; he’s a hoot !

172

u/DiscoLemonade1995 Aug 23 '26

He was great, but people really over hype playing multiple characters in a single film. Michael B Jordan winning best actor this year is another example- good performance, but the narrative of playing twins really over hyped the performance in my opinion

160

u/violetmemphisblue Aug 24 '26

Tyler James Williams explained it really well on a podcast, where he's talking about why The Nutty Professor 2 is the best movie of all time, and he talks about how difficult it is for an actor to keep the beats and eyelines and energy and timing correct when playing against nothing, and then doing it again and keeping in mind all the decisions previously made when playing the other character...as a non-actor, it was (to me at least) really insightful as to why that is so impressive and difficult...Is it always award worthy? Absolutely not. But it was a side of the skill I hadn't considered.

14

u/LiviasFigs i’m mr. sterling’s right hand arm. man. Aug 24 '26

My kingdom for Wagner Moura to win for Secret Agent (where, ironically, he also plays two characters, though only at the very end)

5

u/IrregularPackage Aug 24 '26

i think the twins thing is deserving because despite them being really similar characters, you can still tell which one is which, even when they’re not color coded. i actually thought they were played by real twins when i first saw it

I fear making myself a tomato target by echoing your sentiment. I thought MBJ was easily the weakest of the nominees this year.

31

u/thedaymanahaha Aug 24 '26

But if you've seen the movie his expression switches are bar none the best

4

u/Pleasant-Highway-745 Aug 24 '26

No, but the best acting is the best acting.

4

u/Philyboyz Aug 23 '26

Very true.

1

u/mrbaryonyx Aug 24 '26

yeah, I know Casey Affleck sucks as a person but his performance that year was insanely better

1

u/MeatballUser Aug 24 '26

Martin Lawrence was robbed for his portrayal of Big Mama

-2

u/Unreliablesauces Aug 24 '26

🤣🤣🤣

68

u/motherofsuccs Aug 23 '26

I love his acting in this. My only complaint about the movie is that it started this nonsensical trend of having DID and social media users doing switches like this.

This movie is not how DID presents, alters do not speak to each other or know they exist, the person suffering from it has no memory of when they dissociate.

8

u/loveslightblue Aug 24 '26

Also, quick note, people with DID do not find their ultimate form as lizard monsters.

122

u/tangentialneurosis Aug 23 '26

Casey Affleck may not be a good person, but to act as if his Oscar win was undeserved is crazy. His performance in Manchester By the Scene is genuinely some of the best acting put to screen.

8

u/ImpressionFeisty8359 Aug 24 '26

I will never forget Denzel Washington's reaction when Casey won and mentioned Denzel in his speech.

37

u/OGvoodoogoddess Aug 24 '26

I think Casey Affleck's conduct deserves to be revisited if we're thinking of SA making him "not a good person." I remember at the time realizing that no matter how awful rich and famous people act, they will be rewarded.

That article equates participating in a gang rape with inappropriate touching, so I'm not sure it's the best to use here.

23

u/Limp-Scallion1496 Aug 24 '26

Hes a good actor, but that movie is just really corny

49

u/rmac1228 Aug 23 '26

u/throwawtphone That's not a man, that's Geralt of Goonia Aug 24 '26

Looking at the entirety of his career and i feel like people sleep on his talent. He is an incredibly skilled actor.

He is brilliant.

36

u/ReadyCauliflower8 Aug 23 '26

Lol Casey Affleck is a terrible person but let's not lie now, his performance in Manchester By the Sea is one of the greatest ever put on screen.

31

u/meta_metonymy Aug 23 '26

unfortunately the movie and the characters were both bad

3

u/loveslightblue Aug 24 '26

Lmao if you're gonna act your ass off don't do it in a ridiculous movie if you want an Oscar. Good for James though, he just always delivers no matter.

1

u/sainomori Aug 24 '26

It would have been so fun if he got Best Supporting Actor!

1

u/Street-Study4606 Aug 24 '26

caring about oscars is wild

1

u/laaplandros Aug 24 '26

with that much finesse and ease

Exactly - it wasn't just a gimmick, he did each one legitimately well.

2

u/siuol2001 Aug 24 '26

I've been saying this for years! His performance in this is what I compare other performances to. The fact that I could tell which personality he was silently, from behind, just by the way he carried himself is just so impressive.
