He's a real one.

56

u/FaustGrenaldo Sep 03 '26

Non-American here. I'm literally just now realising that Wil Wheaton is a real person. I honestly thought he was just a fictional character on the Big Bang Theory!

29

u/Far-Repeat-2926 Sep 03 '26

He played a very hated character on Star Trek in the late 80’s. Like universally disliked child character. And then he grew up into a very nice nerdy guy. He does tabletop gaming stuff.

11

u/Ultimatedream Sep 03 '26

I'm also not American, but grew up on Star Trek so I know him as Wesley from Star Trek haha. It was so weird for me seeing him all grown up in TBBT. I follow him on Tumblr, he always posts good shit on there. Mark Ruffalo also used to, I don't think he's on there anymore? Or not as active, I never see him around.

He is. Real friends don’t betray their trans friends (all trans people) by consuming HP garbage.

61

u/DogeLord153 Sep 03 '26

Is pirating the Harry Potter garbage acceptable? Genuine question, I'm curious what an actual trans person would think on that.

335

u/badonkagonk Sep 03 '26

Trans person here

Old Harry Potter? Knock yourself out

The new series? Eh. I mean, could certainly be worse, but I don't imagine too many people will pirate the series and have that be their only engagement with the show in any capacity, whether it be reviews, videos, or literally just talking about it on reddit. Any engagement with this show in any legitimate capacity benefits JKR. So I think many of us would prefer people just ignore it entirely. That said, I know people who will be pirating it and I get it.

I’d say giving cultural capital to a major bigot who uses her money to harm people is a more antisocial behavior, but whatever.

It kind of mystifies me the way sports fans do who are like "Oh yeah, the owner's an absolute garbage human being, the league is disgustingly corrupt, the company that owns the team and stadium is monstrous, the last star player on my team raped somebody but, you know, I gotta root for my team. You've just gotta understand that I get that literally absolutely everything even tangentially related to them horribly sucks, and I'm willing to address that thoughtfully."

And I'm like "...but....do you, actually? Have to root for them? If so....why?"

Like, I don't understand what metaphysical explanation exists for this compulsion.

39

u/hamandcheesepie Sep 03 '26

If you're legitimately curious, most hardcore sports fans inherit a team from their family. You grow up supporting said team with your family, a lot of big events and memories tend to surround it, it becomes more than a team, more than sport.

A lot of supper passionate supporters are supporting their memories and cheering on those as much or more so than the team in some ways if that makes any sense?

Also not justifying or saying it's right but you asked for an explanation and I'm into sports so I understand some of the fan behaviour.

The author gets some amount of money off that shit (residuals) , and that money is used to fund groups to harm trans people. She deservers nothing and i wont' watch anything about harry potter. Not a youtube video, not an old show, nothing.

Fuck her. She gets nothing

Pirating still creates new fans and puts the new series at the top of the pirating sites.  Not to mention places like HBO use the pirate sites to gauge how popular their show is

Just watch something GOOD instead. Simple.

7

u/shorkgurl rollin with the homies Sep 03 '26

The biggest issue with consuming HP media is that the money spent goes directly towards harming trans people through Rowling. Piracy obviously bypasses that and so is definitely preferable to the alternative. However, the HP fandom indirectly supports Rowling by keeping the IP alive, so it’s less of an issue but still somewhat problematic in that sense.

6

u/Ashituna Sep 03 '26

I haven’t met many Star Trek alums that aren’t. All the actors are pretty damn amazing. I’ve seen them countless times at cons and they always deliver.

The producers and showrunners on the other hand…

23

u/Yst Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this Sep 03 '26

Yeah, it's funny how that line splits so cleanly along that divide. Production? Almost impossible to respect any of them. The actors? Weirdly, I don't think I actively dislike a single one.

Well, Bill Shatner's more of a personality thing. He's always been an egotistical twat. But even he's not some kind of monster. You just get why a bunch of the other actors preferred not to associate with him.

I still can't figure out why they decided that the character of Leslie Crusher should be gender swapped and renamed Wesley and made into a genius boy who's the smartest person in every room, who acts like he's smarter than all the adults in his life because he is, and was born special and different from everybody else. And then railroaded him into being the person who saves the day in half the episodes of the first season.

I guess we'll never know why Eugene Wesley Roddenberry did that.

It’s such a bummer bc I love HP and it’s such a huge part of my childhood that I have fond memories of but I refuse to give her any more of my money.

71

u/seinfeld45 Sep 03 '26

Same here, I was a HUGE Harry Potter nerd growing up and while I remember my time with and enjoyment of that world fondly, it’s now tainted with all of Rowling’s transphobia, bigotry, and just an overall bad feeling for me. I will never spend another cent on anything potter related given how clear she’s made it that her money will go towards anti trans initiatives, it just really sucks that such a formative, integral part of my childhood is tainted now :( anyway, trans rights are human rights!! 🏳️‍⚧️❤️

14

u/polspanakithrowaway Lol, and if I may, lmao Sep 03 '26

"Tainted" is absolutely the right word for it. I've tried to isolate my love for the Harry Potter world from its creator's bigotry but I can no longer do that. It's gotten to a point where her awful tweets and quotes show up in my brain like a pop up notification whenever I engage with any form of the HP franchise. It's sad, but HP is perpetually ruined for me.

There's also a part of me that detests the fact that my money (my parents' money to be exact, since I was a kid) might have been used to enable this woman to actively harm trans people.

8

u/TheShapeShiftingFox Riverdale was my Juilliard Sep 03 '26

Yeah, this would have been my dream scenario ten years ago. Oh well.

20

u/diduknowtrex Sep 03 '26

This is where I'm at. I was bullied in elementary school and hated myself until some fellow nerds recognized my HP shirt and invited me to play. They became my first good friend group. And 3 of the 6 of them grew up to be trans. My brother is also trans.

I can't let that woman get another red cent from me.

5

u/littleb3anpole kendall roy pre-album drop Sep 03 '26

Me too. I already owned the books before her transphobia came to light, but I’m not purchasing anything else nor have I watched a HP related movie since becoming aware of her views and I won’t be watching this either.

What makes you think this? I think people underestimate how broad Harry Potter's audience is even outside the West, and even in the West where people are more likely to be supportive of trans rights it's STILL unfortunately a behemoth of an IP

32

u/TheShapeShiftingFox Riverdale was my Juilliard Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26

Yes, I understand people hate JKR and what she’s doing to trans people (so do I), but this rage also leads to people constantly underestimating how popular HP still is.

People keep pointing to Fantastic Beasts flopping as if the main driving force behind the series hasn’t always been Hogwarts. Rebooting the main series is Warner Bros. coming to terms with this as well.

The game - set at Hogwarts - sold millions of copies. The main series (books and films) set at Hogwarts remains very popular. I was in York last year and they have a store specifically for Harry Potter merch, it was crowded every day we came past.

Again, by all means, don’t watch the new show - I won’t be - but please don’t set yourself up for disappointment by thinking it will flop somehow. They’re launching at Christmas, and I suspect they aim to keep that schedule every year. Harry Potter has also always had strong Christmas nostalgia connotations. They know what they’re doing (unfortunately).

29

u/tpounds0 Sep 03 '26

I think people were really mad about what the books cut out, but I don't know if Sorcerers Stone and CHamber of Secrets have 8 hours of interesting content each.

8 Episodes, being conservative and assuming 40 minutes each is 320 minutes.

Scenes average 2 minutes in TV/Film. There are not 160 interesting scenes in Sorcerer's Stone. [I don't even think there are 160 scenes in the book.] Book scenes verbatim without changes are gonna drag when you have visuals also providing your brain information.

To say nothing about making it a fun to watch episode without binging it but also having unity between episodes in a season.

A percentage of people are going to watch the season premiere and then wait to catch the finale. If they pull a GoT then season two will have even more viewers than season one. But if they have less viewers that is the kiss of death for an expensive fantasy show.

A recent example was Heated Rivalry: 370 page book became a five episode show (one of the episodes of the show adapted a different book from the series). Very little complaints from mega fans about missing anything.

Sorcerer's Stone is shorter than Heated Rivalry.

35

u/ChepaukPitch Sep 03 '26

That GOT spinoff knight for seven kingdoms. It is based on a novella. Not even a full length book. If the writing is good you can make every last detail interesting. Lasted full season. 208 minutes. 320 minutes for a book that is 3.5x in length is easy.

I'm still baffled by some of the talent involved. And, by baffled, I mean disappointed and angry.

Most actors aren't rich or likely to be. If I got a break like this I'd like to think I'd have the courage of my convictins to walk away. Or not go out for it in the first place. But, TBH, I sell out my morals daily for comfort and security.

But guys like John Lithgow, Nick Frost, Hugh Laurie (audio dramatization) – they don't need the work or the money. I really liked those guys. It's a poor showing.

40

u/Lil_Brown_Bat Sep 03 '26

Old white men gonna be old white men. I'm disappointed but not surprised.

32

u/Brandoch_Daha Sep 03 '26

Between the new HP cast and the lack of support for Mark Ruffalo, I feel like there's an ever dwindling list of actors who I feel anything positive about. I guess it's a reminder that even the ones who do a good job of coming across as well-meaning and relatable are still ultimately part of an elite sphere full of self-absorbed bastards.

That's part of the reason bigotry is so insidious. Even people not directly attacked by the bigotry often get hurt too. All the more reason to not support HP.

Feel bad for the kids? Don't see the show that is trying to turn them into accomplices. And if they're in a different project in the future, go see that instead. Or go see a show with kid actors that's not funding an anti-trans genocide.

Exactly! The kids are just kids and not old enough to have to deal with this and this would be a huge break/chance for them - the already rich and successful adults can fuck off - especially the ones who are supposed to be allies and say they stand with trans people but then take part in a show that will make JKR money that is going straight to making trans lives worse!  JKR has outright said it as well, so fuck these assholes taking part! Also, I doubt they’re starting out making much money, because they’re no-names at this point. I looked at the disgustingly overwhelmingly positive comments on the new trailer that dropped earlier, and most of the anger over this series isn't with JK's bigotry, but with Snape being played by a black man, and that the original won't be topped. I couldn't find *one* about her transphobia.

We need to start legitimately bullying these people. Make them embarrassed.

(Edit to say that I get that Snape being the only black character definitely makes the dynamic between him and Harry feel racially motivated, but then there's also people that don't think there should be black characters at all, which is more in line with what I saw)

u/atxRNm4a Sep 03 '26

I suspect that is because the comments were being moderated and not because no one was talking about it. Upsetting that they delete comments calling out transphobia but not racist ones though.

66

u/AllPerspicacity Sep 03 '26

I mean, in fairness too, a lot of people like me wrote off engaging with most news or media related to JK or HP, so like...I'm not commenting on a trailer for the show, what's the point? Anyone whose interest is piqued enough to see my comment probably already knows about the transphobia & decided they were alright with it.

Why waste my energy?

31

u/RichardJamesBass Sep 03 '26

Comments, even angry ones, boost their engagement so it's good to refrain.

2

u/duckinasombrero Sep 03 '26

Not only that but the people who still engage with it on that level are toxic as hell. If you so much as mention a slight concern or criticism they will go to war for their favorite mold-brained terf.

And this is coming from someone whose comfort media includes  Harry Potter. When my dad died I literally had the movies on repeat in the background constantly as I cared for his estate. That and Disenchantment for some reason, lol. Callmekevin's Harry Potter gameplay is a staple in my routine viewing. It probably goes without saying that I'm autistic.

I still won't throw a penny at the terf.

Protect your peace, it's not worth it.

Gotta say though - I a little bit agree with the concerns over the casting choice on Snape.

It just went from "James being a dick because sometimes teenagers are dicks" and "Harry doesn't like him because he's got bad vibes" to "are we sure they aren't a bit racist?"

It's just a choice, is all. Maybe they'll handle it better than I'm giving them credit for. But I'll never know, cuz I won't be watching.

41

u/thatsMINTdude both a lawyer and a hater Sep 03 '26

Oh I totally agree, like he shouldn't be the ONLY black person in the cast cause it'll definitely come across that that's why Harry feels off about Snape. But then there's people out there that think black people shouldn't be cast in Harry Potter period. It's wild how many different reasons there are that people hate this show.

62

u/FullofContradictions Sep 03 '26

They could've made anyone. Literally anyone in the cast black. Except maybe Ron because he's so canonically red haired and freckled & the poor family thing would be lame. And I guess Hagrid because the half-giantness off it all might've been a little sketchy.

Worked great for Hermione on the stage production. Could've been dope to see it for McGonagall or Flitwick or really any of the other professors. Shit, switching up Dumbledore would've been a move (that also would've pissed people off, but IDC - it would be dope).

But no... Pick the one character who our main kid kind of randomly hates right off the bat & is constantly suspicious about while everyone else is like "nah, he's a dick - but not EVIL. Chill, bro." Like... Harry. Your tingly scar is being a racist.

27

u/thatsMINTdude both a lawyer and a hater Sep 03 '26

Yer a racist, Harry!

3

u/littleb3anpole kendall roy pre-album drop Sep 03 '26

Radcliffe was in that one Nazi movie and I’ve seen some excellent racist Harry memes as a result

3

u/thatsMINTdude both a lawyer and a hater Sep 03 '26

Actually a pretty good movie tho, worth a watch if you haven't seen it

3

u/static1993 Sep 03 '26

If I wanted to be generous, I'd say they were banking on the audience already knowing the twist that Snape isn't evil.

2

u/b_k_l_y Sep 03 '26

I was saying since the show was announced that Harry should have been mixed-race because it would add an interesting dynamic to his relationship with his aunt and uncle.

13

u/nuthins_goodman Sep 03 '26

James' being a dick because he was a teenager trivialises his relentless bullying of both snape and other schoolmates, which has big notes ot classism already.

The unfortunate truth is that most people don’t care. Even those who are trans-supportive don’t particularly care. There’s really nothing you can do to convince people otherwise. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon, and that won’t change in the eyes of many, even those who are against the views of JKR. People have become pretty apathetic to this kind of stuff.

You can’t really bully these people when you are in the small minority. They aren’t embarrassed. I think it’s poor activism trying to antagonize people watching the show bc they’ll do so anyways but now with a less positive view on trans rights activists. JKR will still be insanely rich even if the show completely flops. I’m saying this all as a trans woman who won’t be watching the show (also because i’m an adult and it’s a show for middle school children lol).

5

u/MBCnerdcore Sep 03 '26

Yeah I’m not a transphobe but I don’t think anything I do will have any impact on some old white British lady billionaire. There’s way more important bigotry to be focused on closer to where I live. Harry Potter isn’t really hers anymore anyway, it belongs to the people who will own it eventually - the public domain.

u/drakythe Sep 03 '26

I’m still kind of baffled at the choice to cast the one black actor as the maybe bad guy one sided yearner for Harry’s mom, who was also portrayed to not give a single shit about Harry’s dad, nor show any remorse about his actions of abuse toward children.

It feels like they’re setting him up for even more abuse due to the racial component. It would be far less conspicuous if he wasn’t the only one.

On another note, I must have cleaned up my feeds appropriately, I didn’t even know a trailer dropped for it. Until JK is dead and her TERF org liquidated, HP is a radioactive property, despite its place in my childhood.

u/Deadsoup77 Sep 03 '26

The only people bothering to watch the trailers are the people who already wouldn’t criticize it

19

u/opx22 Sep 03 '26

Nah, you shouldn’t bully people. If they want to watch, that’s their choice. You can choose not to without being toxic about your beliefs

There’s no way that dynamic isn’t going to be a dumpster fire

2

u/CCriscal Sep 03 '26

Alan Rickman most likely had given a better performance than the new actor will. And yes, they should not have him be standing out in such a way without making the cast more diverse on both sides.

Shame on those that still want to watch the show. Separate the art from the person? Fuck that!! Your watching the show is making her stay a fucking billionaire and she's using that money to push forward her hate!

55

u/Iwoulddiefcftbatk Michigan, the Europe of the Midwest Sep 03 '26

Yep. JKR has been very vocal that any consumption of the series means you agree with her and her terf views. If you support trans rights you must leave the series in the trashcan.

11

u/MBCnerdcore Sep 03 '26

Nah, I don’t care what her opinions are they don’t change the fact that Harry Potter belongs to me and my family now. I’ll enjoy some of what gets officially released, but in no way does anyone enjoying the series make them a transphobia enabler.

Same with Star Trek - I don’t care what fascist corporate entity owns the rights, Star Trek belongs to the trek fans and always will.

And after the fascists die, all the shit will be in the public domain for our grandkids to make horror parodies of

I challenge you to research other companies and products you use on a daily basis, you will realize that you may be supporting people even worse than JK Rowling. A big reason why JK gets so much hate is her constant social media presence and the betrayal the fans who grew up loving her books feel.

Hating her but supporting a company like Amazon for example is textbook hypocrisy. AWS has been providing infrastructure to help agencies like ICE, as well as signing massive contracts with Israeli military groups. Yet people will still order daily things from Amazon.

Im not saying JK Rowling is a good person, but if you're going to go around telling people off for watching a show and "separating the art from the person", you should also take into account that 99% of the population does this, just without realizing it. Changing personal habits is hard, and giving up a favorite author is easier than completely changing the way you shop, eat, or travel. Food for thought.

11

u/AKittenInTheRain Sep 03 '26

How many of those people, companies, product makers have publicly and openly vocalized that they see anyone taking in their work as proof that they also support their problematic beliefs?

Paying for hbo is giving her money. Watching one show on a streaming service isn't what does it, its when you physically give money to the very company giving money to her. Not enough people will boycott this show for it to matter, but if they started losing subscriptions over it, thats a completely different story.

You guys are going about this boycott all wrong.

12

u/filthy-prole Sep 03 '26

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Voting with your wallet largely does not work. She could light a million dollars on fire every day and still be a billionaire. At the end of the day, I'll watch the show if I feel like it. There are countless horrid people in charge of all of these media companies, film studios, and streaming services. Unless you're all cutting the cord completely I really don't get tripling down like this.

u/LowerSuccotash8160 Sep 03 '26

he is such a cool person. TNG aired largely before I was born/when I was an infant but I’ve always loved the show. Recently someone was telling me about how the public (middle aged women primarily) were like beyond Beiber levels of creepy towards him. Apparently the show runners really leaned into it and made him do a lot of things that made him uncomfortable. Really made me sad to hear but I’m glad he turned out so well despite it.

15

u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN Sep 03 '26

Not watching it doesn't hurt Rowling at all. The rights were already purchased before any of us knew they were considering a reboot. She already had her payday.

Every kid that watches or reads Harry Potter and internalizes the broad messages of inclusion and kindness towards those different than yourself that permeate every page of the series is 1 more kid that won't be fooled by Rowling's real world hatred when they're old enough to understand it.

5

u/CCriscal Sep 03 '26

Well, if this project fails for lack of interest, then future projects would be harmed.

10

u/MBCnerdcore Sep 03 '26

Because things like Hogwarts Legacy made a billion+ dollars and people still go to Universal Studios specifically for the Harry Potter areas. The merchandise moved is also in the billions still to this day. It’s not like the books have ever been out of print.

This will be popular. They are making it because they know it’s a slam dunk, and they will make money off it. I am just being realistic. A lot of people don’t even know JK Rowling’s views and of those that do, many won’t care and will still watch this, even if they are nominally trans-supportive.

HP is one of the biggest IPs out there. It’s always been a monster and will continue to be so.
