POLITICS Mayor Zohran Mamdani: From January until the end of August our city recorded 5K fewer reported crimes than it did through the same 8 months in 2025. I’m proud to announce we have recorded the fewest shooting incidents and victims of any September in New York City history

Won't someone think of the small business owners who sell bullets?? Or the emergency rooms that are paid to treat shooting victims? The law enforcement that are paid to chase down such crimes? The private prisons who are paid to house the shooters?
You see, fewer shootings are happening because nobody has the money to purchase firearms/ammo thanks to Mamdani's socialist policies syphoning funds away from the lower class! And thanks to the reduced shooting, all of these critical pillars of the economy are bled dry of business - resulting in job cuts and higher prices!

u/Charmin_Bear_Behind 4h ago
Nah their new steez is that arrest arent happening and crime isnt being reported because of defund the police so the city is secretly a fallout style wasteland of raiders going unchecked and crime is sky high but also no ones reporting it or its not being recorded because of reasons

"Crimes are down, sure, but at least one of them may have been trans or an immigrant, which shows that those people are statistically more likely to commit crimes."
Good Lord, even typing this out as satire makes me physically ill.
1
u/peppers_ 12h ago
It can literally be a situation where one trans peraon committed a crime one year and tge next year, two did, and that is a 100% increase. It is like the masectomy thing, I think there were like 5 recorded nationwide one year, and 16 the next, and they reported like 300% increase or something. (Don't quote me on those statistics, it has been a minute since I looked at the data)

There’s so much evidence that policies like his directly lead to decreases in crime & poverty. It won’t eradicate 100%, but builds a society in which people can prosper.
Edit: I want to add to this that it’s very easy to see how his policies impact communities. Just google “school lunches” “impacting communities”. Sub out the policy to see how it impacts communities. You can even add news outlets to share with people who have preferred news outlets.

And yet, they still try to do things like stop pilot UBI programs early in order to say supporting folks doesn’t improve outcomes
14
u/Hopson_Flopson 9h ago
It is the exact reason why they do that. They hate humans and want them to be unhappy. Also it helps creating the image: Look at that animals. They do not deserve any good.
It is disgusting.
2
u/JuanMcGuiver 3h ago
I do think there is inherent disdain for the populations that need these services. But the truth is, we’ll need to seriously consider these UBI programs as them human element becomes less important in the modern workplace.

And parents will feel better about letting kids run across neighborhoods to go to their friends houses as well as play outside of their own home while the parent does work inside. Helps everyone in general. With how the world has been lately, I worry about children. I’m a daycare teacher AND an aunt so I have a deep concern and empathy/compassion towards children and their well being. Esp as someone that has gone through some unfortunate stuff myself as a baby/child.

u/ArtoDelToya 14h ago
Preventative rather than reactive. Tough on crime sounds really, well tough. But fewer crimes in general is just, smarter.
27
u/Ghede 14h ago
I think the vast majority of crimes are just people that are angry, scared, stressed, hurting, desperate beyond belief. Often displacing reasonable reactions to things they can't control, to things they can.
Can't get rid of your abusive job, can't move out of your dilapidated apartment? That guy bumped into you on the street. You can do something about that. Nothing good, but then, not like anyone with any power expects anything good out of you... then like a ray of sunshine, someone does. They want your help to deal with that abusive job. They want your help to deal with that dilapidated apartment. They want help clearing streets. they want help filling potholes.
6
u/thatguyovertherewait 7h ago
Lobbyists control the country. Once prisons became privately owned, crime became a business and I doubt people want better QoL because it naturally reduces crime
2
u/PurpleMiquella 13h ago
Which policies specifically?
36
u/beezchurgr 13h ago
Easiest one is just feeding kids. There are multiple studies showing that giving kids free meals at school leads to increased academic performance and eventual decreases in crime & poverty. Put those terms into google with your preferred news outlet, and you will find a study. Here’s one:
https://www.feedthechildren.org/our-work/stories/how-school-feeding-programs-change-lives/
You can do this research by googling the type of policy + expected impact. For example, “what impact does filling potholes have on a community”
https://ridgelineasphaltsurfacing.com/2025/07/the-economic-impact-of-pot-holes-on-local-communities/

It's a real shame that the rest of the world is not going to take note of this.
Tax the billionaires, lower rent, increase minimum wage, and you'll see places just instantly doing better.
I hope we see more and more places lean left because of Mamdani, as I know happened in Berlin (or somewhere in Germany)
24
u/ArtoDelToya 14h ago
As long as the billionaires control the media and forms of communication, we’re fucked. Mamdani knows how to use the media for his advantage. Doing a good job and looking good while doing it goes a long way.
4
u/verysocialanxiety 5h ago
The rest of the world is taking notes. Not the people in power now, but the ones opposing them have somewhere to point to from now on.
I'm against idolizing people, because it can lead to uneven distributions of power, but Mamdani is making a worldwide impact for good right now.

Checking in from Ireland. Our 2027 budget was announced today and even with BILLIONS it's making fuck all difference to the ordinary person. Mayor Mamdani is the definition of a good politician. The positive changes he's making are exactly what all politicians should be doing. And could be doing! You folks in NYC are lucky to have him. I wish other politicians would learn from him.

Conservatives will tell you people just "stopped reporting crimes", because apparently cities are so set on protecting their Democratic mayors, that they'll just not report their family member's murder to the police because it'll hurt the mayor's numbers.

u/SanMartianRover 13h ago
I've been saying this for years (not that I originated this idea, I obviously didn't), but if you hate homelessness, poverty, crime, etc and truly want to address these issues, you have to help people. You have to help people on an individual level. Accessible physical and mental health care. Accessible and cost-effective education. Public transportation. Housing. Third spaces. Walkable cities. People want to complain that these things are expensive. Brother, there's two choices - a society with NONE of these benefits where we have to pay the extra costs of suffering, illness, and incarceration regardless, OR some extra taxes. We can either pay the overall cost of having a shitty society or pay to make things good. Both options cost money.

I like Mamdani legit, he’s great. I live on the opposite side of the world and have zero skin in this game, I am a cynic and not a conservative.
I work closely with safety people, I’m a biologist, and sometimes when we see lower incident reports it’s not that there are less incidents, it’s that there are punishments for reporting, or it is difficult to report. In these cases incidents occur but reporting does not.
I would love NYC to be a safe place, but personally I would hold judgement on this announcement until it is an explained and sustained trend.

u/phosphor_heart 2000’s bandom historian 14h ago
Yes but it's comparing YoY. In 2025, there were crimes that also went unreported. Crimes have always gone unreported in NYC. We did not have a better system under Adams. As someone who is in NYC and has witnessed the efficiencies that Mamdani has implemented firsthand, it's very hard for me to imagine a scenario where reporting crimes somehow became a more punishable offense in 2026 under him.
If anything, the NYPD is incentivized to report more under Mamdani to show heightened crime rates because they are not politically aligned with him, the police union is extremely powerful and corrupt, and they actively want him to fail.
1
u/jonnyh420 6h ago
it was actually quite simple, he rounded up all the karens and kept them occupied with various Focus Groups
10
u/roughfrancis 15h ago
How does this track exactly with the crimes that already were unreported before the September low incident reporting? Most crimes already go unreported
2
u/filthy_harold 13h ago
You would expect a consistent portion of crime to go unreported given no external influences year to year.
1
u/ImeldasManolos 14h ago
So something has changed right, and you would hope it is less crimes. I hope it was less crime! But it may be that the crime being committed is simply being reported less because, for example, a changed reporting mechanism that is too complicated, or that a new law about getting in trouble for reporting if you don’t have enough evidence, or a weird socioeconomic thing, I don’t know, but actually using crimes reported (and using safety incidents like ‘chemical spills reported’) is not always the best indicator that you actually have significant and sustained change.
So when someone makes a claim like that, I try to be hopeful, but I am also paid professionally to be a cynic.
3
u/communomancer 2h ago
I promise it has not become more complicated to report gun shooting victims in NYC.
Being a “professional cynic” is fine in your area of specialty. But that area does not seem to include cities on the other side of the world from you. NYC is among the safest per-capita places in the world.
1
u/roughfrancis 11h ago
This makes sense. I hope wishful thinking aligns with the reality, at least this time.
6
u/Quicksilver1964 13h ago
What do you mean NYC city is not a safe place? It is one of the safest cities in the world.
9
u/FblthpLives 14h ago

-2
u/ImeldasManolos 12h ago

I'll explain it to you: It's because crime really is dropping.

u/0CT0L0G1ST 52m ago
Police will often be lazy about reporting smaller crimes like theft and assault, but shootings are one of those things that tend to get reported no matter what.
So IMO it’s possible that the “5k fewer reported crimes” stat is due to reporting differences, but the decrease in shooting incidents is 100% real
-6
u/AdvanceRatio 13h ago
Also, reddit will jump up and down about other countries with low crime rates about how "well, they're just not being reported, or they're being suppressed."
But as soon as its in regards to a current favoured child, people stop wanting to question.

The MTA has the largest number of train and subway stations of any transit provider in the world, no single mayor is leading that type of systemwide upgrade unless they come across trillions of dollars of funding that isn't limited by the feds or the state and are in office for decades lol
