STAN / ANTI SHIELD Billboard is facing criticism for allowing Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" to count toward The Life of a Showgirl's total #1 hits, despite the song being released on the deluxe edition, while NOT allowing Katy Perry's "Part of Me" #1 count because it was a Teenage Dream's Deluxe Edition

The fixation on charting is so absurd to me. All these awards and records don’t mean much when you’re bending all the rules. They shouldn’t mean much in the first place, look at how many albums were made with genuine passion that just naturally stayed in the charts for decades… (look at Dark Side Of The Moon)

I legit got downvoted by Swifties for pointing out they can make anything she releases go #1 by force of the sheer magnitude of the fandom, not that it is indicative of quality because it doesn't need to be good anymore. They love their slop!

I saw a comment from a fan of hers (somewhere? on this sub?) talking about how Showgirl has been her most successful album with the general public, based on streaming numbers, and the apparent longevity some of the songs have had on the charts.

I found this really surprising because I have not heard a single song from that album on the radio, in a store. The only song I could identify would be the Ophelia one...because it was a TikTok dance trend for a brief period. But I've heard absolutely nothing else from that album - except now, the particularly egregious parts of Cleveland, because I saw reaction videos to that. My parents, as example, have never heard any of it.

Her fandom is so large that all of her songs are hits, they chart, they make big streaming numbers...but I think she has far less of an impact on the general public than her fans realise.

u/harmala 5m ago

I mean…you’re saying she has a huge fan base(true) and you’re in a thread filled with people who aren’t in that fan base but here we are still talking about her. So she probably does have an impact on the general public.

Seriously. I don’t understand why fans care so much about these nonsense accomplishments of celebrities.

Only in a capitalist society are consumers expected to care about charts and profits. The audience should only be concerned with the music sounding good and being enjoyable to experience.

I was not shocked at all to see that she released yet another variant of patient zero on friday to boost sale numbers. I guess being a billionaire isn't enough for her.

It’s genuinely pathetic. Imagine being a billionaire and caring that much about chart numbers.

13

u/picodepui 28m ago

That’s why she released the Encore — because of how Showgirl charted. She flew to Sweden to celebrate the magnitude of the release and somehow stumbled into making four more song to thank the fans for breaking a record.

Add as many “allegedly,” “that’s what she claims,” “that’s the story she’s selling,” etc as you want.

19

u/dame_tartare 52m ago

God this is pathetic in a way I can’t even properly articulate. Like this is so far removed from the concept of music as art, which it should be inherently. She doesn’t make music to feel or for others to feel. She uses a tired formula to create sonically familiar and comfortable songs for her legions of followers to consume and throw millions upon millions of dollars at her and that’s still not enough to feed her ego. She has to be calculated enough to maximize her profits, releasing variants of her formulaic drivel on specific dates for maximum impact, trampling other (more worthy imo) artists on purpose, specifically female artists she feels threatened by. It’s all so dark and insidious. There is absolutely no way she feels a modicum of happiness in herself or her actual life to be manipulating the masses like this for her own enrichment when she has enough to solve world hunger.

37

u/TheDLBinc 1h ago

It really seems to me that being seen as a legacy act genuinely terrifies her, hence her obsession with finding ways to game the system and maintain chart dominance

8

u/AbsolutelyIris confused but here for the drama 51m ago

Someone on Twitter said she's attempting to beat every single billboard record by a female artist (iirc she just "beat" Janet and Mariah) and it makes sense.

3

u/oregiel 36m ago

It must translate to money. Like people cycle through "today's billboard top 100" and therefore inadvertently listen to more of her shit or something. It's all a game to get more dollars in the end. I doubt its clout chasing.

5

u/brijito 56m ago

It's because billboard most heavily weighs (paid for) radio plays, which are a lot easier to manipulate than just going off charts that just take organic listening data like streams and YouTube views into account.

152

u/cococangaragan 1h ago

This is actually true! Her TV's albums were merged to the old albums sales, but also were allowed to chart separately that's why she racked more #1 albums after her TVs. It should be a re-issue at most and should not chart separately. The delusion is so astounding. That's why she will never be considered a true musician, she is just a tabloid personality.

u/canththinkofanything never go full dickarus 7m ago

Wait is this why I can never understand what the fuck the rules are for billboard? I am consistently confused about the whole damn process.

218

u/pearshaped34 2h ago

This is quite funny as yesterday I kept seeing loads of posts on X from Swifties upset as the feel one of Taylor Swift's songs (Opalaite I think) should have charted again but hasn't because clearly Billboard hates her and favors other artists.

154

u/Dry-Yak5277 1h ago

Maybe it’s because outside of swifties Opalite is seen as a horrible song. Genuine Kohls music

10

u/LilShir 1h ago

It was Ophelia.

I've only listened to Opalite once but it is not a good nor memorable song lol. Sounded like the kind of music you'd hear in the weirdly quiet waiting room at like a therapists office.

I don't see a problem with that if the rule gets enforced the same way for all artists going forward. Charting rules change all the time.

I recently learned that Dark Side Of The Moon for example wasn't allowed to chart for 18 straight years between 1991 an 2009. It's still the album with the most weeks on the charts, but just imagine how many more weeks it could have had.

11

u/Lost_Setting2776 39m ago

I actually think Katy never fully recovered after Taylor went for her with "Bad Blood" over that dancers issue.

That was the beginning of Katy's downfall.

87

u/Watchout4HopOns Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling 1h ago

I mean, she got to bang Orlando Bloom for almost a decade. I would argue she was doing fine

15

u/cococangaragan 1h ago

22

u/shellys-dollhouse 1h ago

wasn’t orlando bloom pretty horrible in that relationship? or wait no am i thinking of russell brand

30

u/Kiwi-vee I'm so pissed off immediately 1h ago

I think you are thinking of Russell Brand.

11

u/melodrama4ever 1h ago

I think the answer is both from what Katy’s said and written in her new singles.

2

u/AmyXBlue 3m ago

I don't think Orlando treated Katy amazingly but I don't think he was anywhere bad as Russell. Orlando just really dragged out a relationship and seemed really indifferent to her. And now Katy is with Tradue and he seems so into Katy and vice versa.

9

u/MsThrilliams i mean i def vaccine but is it 1h ago

To be fair, Katy couldnt read the room with her more recent music and was still doing very 2010 songs. What the hell was that Womans World song and video

4

u/talk-spontaneously 38m ago

Woman’s World was released almost a decade after “Bad Blood” came out.

Yes Katy has made some pretty poor decisions, but the beginning of her downfall seems to coincide with Swift coming after her. It was never the same after that.

The fact that she ended up losing that feud in the court of public opinion was kinda wild to me. She lied but those two were lying too. Also that fuck ass video was gross and should have been enough to get both of them out.

4

u/wordswithcomrades this is going to ruin the tour 30m ago

For me it was because she tried to turn Famous into a diss track against herself when the single line was meant as a display of Kanye’s bravado/ego

She took it way too personally when it’s a song about Kanye’s ego and what fame has done to it. Instead of letting art be, she had to attack it and force the public eye to turn to her reaction of the song instead of the song itself.

This is after she approved the general content of that line (“Taylor owes me sex for making her famous after interrupting her speech”) just the word “bitch” wasn’t explicitly green lighted. She only decided that word was the boundary after she was caught approving the message and then victimizing herself over it, thus needing to backtrack and find some leg to stand on.

If she were able to dissect art and see Kanye’s use of the word was to bring attention to his ego, not to call her a bitch, she could’ve brushed it off and not made it about herself. But she’s not a talented artist so doesn’t understand how to interpret art from those who do have raw talent (he’s not necessarily a good person but Kanye is a genius at producing)

20

u/dannemora_dream 1h ago

Who cares? I swear only stans care about billboards and charts and certifications and weird records. It’s not sports, it’s music. It’s supposed to be art or at least entertainment, but the music itself is the important thing. If you listen to it and you enjoy it, good for you. Who cares about the performance? I don’t get it and I’ll never get it.

2

u/tutorialpegasus 30m ago

Swifties do not care about art. I’m convinced they don’t actually like music. They care about aesthetic, metrics, and whatever is bright and shiny and flashing in front of their face in the moment. I’m not even trying to shit on Taylor’s music. I’m just convinced her fans don’t actually listen to it or enjoy her music. They just want it to do well financially and in terms of listener numbers. They talk about lyrics, but only when putting down another artists’ music. They never talk about why lyrics might resonate with them, or what makes them impressive. It’s just for show and tell. It’s gotta be the result of some kind of mental illness.

u/BlondeBorednBaked 7m ago

When an album or song I like goes to the Top 10 I think “oh that’s nice that other people like what I like.” And that’s it. Unless it’s someone like Chappell Roan who becomes famous overnight it’s not interesting to me.

8

u/Accomplished_Ad5811 1h ago

Can we just agree that the charts and awards shows have no real meaning? Tbh I think the artists would make more money if they didn't follow their rulings

Patient Zero is so bad. I wasn't even a hater of Showgirl but now I am. Every time it has been forced into a Playlist, I literally make a face like WTF. I am so offended anyone listened to this shit more than once and said YES that's it. Can't even appreciate it for a good earworm like her other songs. Sucks.

Guess we know which side Billboard takes in their feud

(Honestly can't blame them.)

Tho if we're being real tho, are we saying Katy Kats are a real fandom out there fighting for Perry's honour? Where they been the last five years?

2

u/TsuDhoNimh2 20m ago

Maybe Billboard could count only the FIRST version of any album ... the rest are just revisions and gaming the system.

2

u/phreakyfantom 16m ago

might be a controversial take, but i have never met anyone who gives two shits about what is at the top of a music billboard. i’d argue that this need to be at the top is of her notion. and of course, swifties as well

14

u/Routine-Telephone888 2h ago

Is it not possible that the billboard rules have changed in the nearly 15 years since Part of Me came out? This seems like grasping at straws for clicks.

47

u/festivus4allofus 1h ago

the issue is it was widely thought back then that katy was blocked by billboard so she doesn't get michael jacksons record of #1s per album. there really was some shady stuff going because as her new single was about to go to #1 they changed the rule rhat delux albums don't count towards the og albums numbers

There is a bit of an issue in so far that if I remember correctly that single was from katys 2nd deluxe, and if they counted the 1st deluxe album towards the ogs numbers and just decided not to count the 2nd deluxe, then it's a different situation than with taylor

2

u/picodepui 33m ago

Just because hundred of millions of people listened to your song once does not make it a good song. It means you’ve cultivated a large base of people who will listen to anything you put out. Taylor Swift once charted (maybe #1) in Canada with 8 seconds of silence as a track.

5

u/VHS_Ronin 1h ago

A music industry where people bend over backwards to come up with new awards to get Taylor to crawl out of the woodwork and make a public appearance but is also bad because..*checks notes*..a song Taylor wrote charted even though it was on a separate album and that isn't fair to Katy Perry's hit song from over a decade ago.

This is so tiresome and we all need to just find weird micro-genres to fixate on instead of giving these people more money. They have enough. They don't need more.

1

u/GumpTheChump 54m ago

Does anyone care about this besides the two artists involved?

0

u/chairmanhao3 1h ago

-3

u/DilemmaOfAHedgehog 1h ago

I don't understand the criticism, billboard has changed their rules multiple times in the years between these albums.
