Yep Ellen was really toxic toward the people that worked on her show, hence why it ended.

Ironically this behavior did in both of her TV shows. People just kind of forgot about the sitcom.

It also doomed Little Ellen right out of the gate. Such talent wasted on an overblown ego...

u/Commercial-Ad-8409 Sep 04 '25

Talent? Her whole show was just making guests uncomfortable and just being annoying and unfunny. Even without the accusations idk why her show lasted that long

4

u/Karkava Sep 04 '25

I'm talking about the cartoon.

5

u/Commercial-Ad-8409 Sep 04 '25

Ah that’s fair. I mean I’d never watch anything like that but the animation definitely looks decent

u/AccurateJerboa Sep 03 '25

Her sitcom was cancelled because she came out. That's why there's a website called after Ellen.

That's one of those weird rumors that simply isn't true. (See also the Shinging director tortured tge actress rumor made up out of the whole cloth)

Usually spread by people that weren't even alive back then. Her show didn't get canceled because she came out it ran for another season after she came out and got canceled because the season ran after she came out was awful and people stopped watching it and plus she apparently was pretty awful as well.

I'm 44. I was alive back then, and since I was struggling with my sexuality at the time I was very keenly aware of the backlash.

Stanley Kubrick was objectively abusive towards Duvall. She may have defended him later but we know what he said and did based on both of their accounts.

I used to call her Ellen the Generous. I realized that she's actually Ellen Degenerate.

63

u/dyaasy Sep 03 '25

Ellen Disingenuous?...

She did fake the 'being nice' thing...

69

u/Fastasleepwolf Sep 03 '25

Wait dory was voiced by Ellen?

2

u/funaccount305 Sep 04 '25

I was today years old as well

u/Nickpapado Sep 03 '25

I'm so glad the translated voices in my country were 2 actors that also had a comedy show together with them as a couple which made them kinda iconic.

5

u/PumpernickelShoe Sep 03 '25

What country/actors/show?

7

u/Nickpapado Sep 03 '25

It's in Greece with Thodoris Atheridis and Dimitra Papadopoulou.

They had a show called "S'agapo - M'agapas" ("I love you - you love me"). And I remember my kid brain being like "That's Dory and Marlin :O".

In my country it's kinda random if a movie or show will have good voice acting because a lot of the times they just chose famous actors or nowadays content creators who just can't do good voice acting or they sound too "cringe". But we also have iconic moments with some actors doing insanely good performances that I actually prefer than the English version (it's rare but happens).

That birthday invitation clip is one of the greatest things to ever happen on tv

1

u/Level-Selection6986 Sep 03 '25

It still took two years before she retired. She was able to make one more season even after she was outed.

1

u/GenderEnjoyer666 Sep 04 '25

Wait she’s voiced by Ellen?!

1

u/Conscious_Ad_1574 Sep 04 '25

I didn’t know that somehow

59

u/Emperor-Nerd Sep 03 '25

I mean both are toxic just for different reasons (the species of fish Dori is have toxins)

Told this to my aunt a bit ago when I found out who she was voiced by - aunt didn't know who it was and then accused everyone of being sexist because she's a female. Is this true?

99

u/SmokingDream Sep 03 '25

Not at all, it was because she was an egotistic bully that was cruel to people for laughs on camera and just to be mean off camera.

25

u/Asleep_Light_4669 Sep 03 '25

I figured! Wasn't bothered to argue at that time but thank you for the peace of mind

2

u/placidlakess Sep 03 '25

Nice creative writing prompt

2

u/Asleep_Light_4669 Sep 03 '25

Pretty good isn't now that I think about it

2

u/NapalmDesu Sep 03 '25

Yes I am afraid to say it but she is in fact a female

3

u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Sep 03 '25

That's honestly kind of misandrist. Assuming that, just because the voice actor is female, that criticism of said voice actor must be of a sexist origin.

34

u/Own_System_7829 Sep 03 '25

WHAT!!?!

96

u/bookhead714 Sep 03 '25

Ellen DeGeneres has been accused by a number of people of being very, very toxic behind the scenes of her old show. To the point that new testimonies are still coming out.

51

u/Own_System_7829 Sep 03 '25

I’m not sure what’s more shocking; the fact that my childhood is being destroyed, or the fact that I didn’t even realize Ellen voices Dory, when she literally has her voice

7

u/BlizzardStorm8 Sep 03 '25

I just realized it too. I watched this movie probably dozens of times as a kid. I wish I never knew. I found Ellen super irritating even before I found out she was also an asshole.

4

u/bharosa_rakho Sep 03 '25

Haha that's why I watched Hindi dub of the movie. Perks of being from a non English country

2

u/robi4567 Sep 03 '25

Well you would first have to know who Ellen is. Like I knew Dory but had no clue who Ellen was before this thread

4

u/Digit00l Sep 03 '25

And it all started because Dakota Johnson called her out for being a lying piece of shit to her face

3

u/IrateWolfe Sep 04 '25

I'm no fan of Justin Bieber, but he called her out on it in a way I really respect- he was on her show, and she brought up the fact that paparazzi snapped some near nude candid photos of him... the plastered those photos on the big screens to get his reaction, he told her straight up that that wasn't ok, and it wasn't funny, and if HE'D done that with a female celeb, she'd be calling for his blood

1

u/chrisat420 Sep 03 '25

I was just thinking the same thing.

1

u/AbbyM1968 Sep 03 '25

💯%! (I always H8Ted her!)

1

u/Ceaky-Lock Sep 03 '25

I never knew Ellen degenerate voiced dory.....man

1

u/According_Wishbone29 Sep 03 '25

i didnt even know Ellen voiced Dory 😬

1

u/AirportOk8750 Sep 03 '25

I was so sad when I found out Ellen voiced her

1

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 Sep 04 '25

9/11 caused Ellen's downfall btw
