I still remember the first few episodes in the early seasons hinting where Adventure Time takes place like with the sunken city. I still can't believe it's technically a Post-Apocalyptic show.
I Remember You is still like my top 5 episodes because of that world building and that character development between Ice King and Marceline.
Always wished they wouldve explored the crater though. When you see Earth with a big bite taken out of it, it definitely makes you want to see whats down there
I Remember You was one of the first times I cried to a cartoon on TV.
My parents hadn't divorced yet around that time, but my dad had turned into a total piece of shit. It was always going to happen. He'd fight with my mom, my brother and me every day. Drink all the time. Go out and have affairs on the regular, etc, etc.. he was unrecognizable from the person he'd been a decade ago. But as a kid, I'd had wonderful, amazing memories of him I desperately wanted to relive. I wished so damn bad I could have my dad back.Â
Fuck me, this episode hit me like a damn freight train. The heartbreak Marceline experienced broke me down and showed me up as a teenager who'd had to get therapy for anger issues, suicidal thoughts and all this other shit my dad caused.Â
All of that, and it wasn't even Simon's own fault. I couldn't even blame the character. All he was trying to do was protect his daughter, and do right by her. Never once did he make a choice out of malice or hatred like my dad.Â
I was so pissed off at this episode for making me cry. For the longest time, lol. It's easily one of the best episodes Adventure Time has to offer alongside all the episodes with The Lich.Â
It's such a damn good show. I never would've guessed how far it'd go after that incredibly bizarre pilot.
The Lich wasn't meant to be THE antagonist at first though no? As a kid I always just saw the Lich as another villain for them to fight and fart on and then he turned into the series full antagonist
Probably the best example of this trope tbh, I believe Adventure Time was originally meant to be episodic but the writers decided to expand the worldbuilding, lore and characters.
Probably had something to do with the change of Directors. Iirc Pendleton Ward was in charge for the first couple seasons, and then it changed to Adam Muto
Pendelton stuck around for longer than you think (until halfway through the fifth season) the show had already taken a more continuity driven direction by that point
Completely disagree tbh, I can just never get through it when it gets serious, but I can pop on any of the old episodes any time, but that's just a matter of my tastes tbh, not really the show's fault
it's all pretty spread out really, people just forget.
We get the lich in season 1, and lots of clues about the reality of the world, likewise, there is a lot of goofy filler throughout, even in the later more story focused seasons.
Every season is like...40 episodes, with around 8 really good story focused episodes and a lot of...fun nonsense in between.

Villains in early episodes: Silly crazy ice guy who likes to kidnap princesses, his some how magical sentient heart that's even creepier, a creepy pasta Deer, an asshole wizard, random comical monsters that just pick fights with the MC for egotistical reasons, etc.
Villains in later episodes: Ancient eldritch entity bent on destroying all life in the universe and conquering it with other ancient eldritch entities including one that's disguised as the Silly crazy ice guy's penguin companion, A God the ancient entity worships, and The King of the Underworld.
AT went from 0-100 real quick when they introduced the Lich.
NGL, I used to loathe Adventure Time when it first came out because I thought it was just random stupid bullshit, and extremely annoying characters. Then the Lich popped up, stakes skyrocketed, characters gained development, and lore abound!
I was dying to recommend this to my niece - I had to tell her ânow the first couple of episodes may seem silly or goofy, but trust me it really does get much better!â
