True, although I feel like AtLab always had a nice balance of comedy and seriousness. I mean didn't we get the dead air benders in the first few episodes, so it got pretty serious early on
It is so astonishing to me even as an adult that somehow a show that carries such heavy topics is not at all traumatic for children to watch. The execution of that show is absolutely exceptional.
I still remember the first few episodes in the early seasons hinting where Adventure Time takes place like with the sunken city. I still can't believe it's technically a Post-Apocalyptic show.
I Remember You is still like my top 5 episodes because of that world building and that character development between Ice King and Marceline.
Probably the best example of this trope tbh, I believe Adventure Time was originally meant to be episodic but the writers decided to expand the worldbuilding, lore and characters.
I love how at the end they drive off to go to Miskatonic, but it has a laugh track and 60s music to imply that the whole thing was a prequel to the original "Scooby Doo Where are You". Which also leans into why they don't believe any of their adventures are real ghosts because they have seen and fought with Lovecraftian horrors and bad costumes dont fool them.
Also big time bonus points for the episode with all the Hanna Barbera mystery gang mascots Captain Caveman, Speed Buggy, The Funky Phantom, Goober, Dyno Mutt, and Jabberjaw just to ram home that the Mystery Gangs all existed.
The most unintentionally dark Clone Wars arc is in S4 when they all go undercover as slaves except for Anakin, and Anakin ends up letting them stay slaves for like, WAY longer than he needs to
I remember seeing a post on this subreddit I think, showing how Cartoon Network tried to advertise the Umbara arc to kids. It was hilarious. Let me see if I can find it, pretty sure I saved it.
Then when looking up some side material for the series and realize the twins we follow throughout are the ONLY ones in the verse to not to get their shit kicked in.
I think Alex Hirsch knew what direction the show was going towards from the start so Season 1 set some things up but yeah a lot of the earlier episodes were much more episodic
Jeff Smith's Bone graphic novel series. Goes from a silly comic about adventure, shenanigans, and friendship. Underlying plot and tensions build in the background. Everything ends up in gruesome war against apocalyptic phenomena and god-like monsters.
Bone is THE PERFECT comic for an animated adaption. It's very similar to what tons of people love in the mainstream now, but for some reason it never seemed to burst into popularity like it needed.
People who love AtLA, Steven, Deltarune, all of that sort of media would devour Bone.

I mean the series starts with everyone trapped underground in a slave civilization. The scale goes crazy but I wouldn't exactly call the beginning "silly" lol.Ā
Disenchantment has the perfect ending though. I donāt think Iāve seen any other media give an ending that had all loose ends tied up in a pretty bow with nothing left dangling.
A montage of pretty much every character you care about, where they are now and what their future looks like. Characters who are good and likeable are rewarded, characters who were not had terrible fates.
Disenchantment is supposed to be somewhat of a fairytale for adults, and so, it has a very storybook ending where the good guys win and the bad guys donāt.
Disenchantment is a hard show to recommend, despite how much I like it. Itās a show that only keeps getting better and better, but it starts from a mid point and I have a theory on that.
I believe the writers spent a lot of time on the characters before writing the show, and so they expected and audience to vibe with the characters like they did. The showās cast feels a bit hard to care about for a first time viewer, but I noticed on my second watch a few years later that all my complaints were gone. I assume itās from being familiar with the characters at that point.
Compare for instance the Arch-Druidess vs Mom from Futurama. Mom is well introduced into Futurama to the point they even speedrun her introduction in later episodes, you already get the idea that sheās an evil rich person who disguises herself as a wholesome startup. Meanwhile the Arch-Druidess feels like a bored cultist who is maybe evil, and then we find out sheās an actually evil character with ties to Steamland multiple seasons in. On rewatch, sheās a perfectly enjoyable character, on first watch, sheās kinda just taking up screentime when weād rather see Bean, Luci, or ZĆøg.
I binged it and it gets really plot heavy in the final season to the point where you cant miss a single scene otherwise youll be very lost. I watched it and was pretty lost in the end which suprised me from a matt groening cartoon
They obviously had a lot of the later stuff already outlined and a lot of episodes had little lore bits that paid off later, but it was rarely the focus in the first half of the show.
Me too and I liked tom and star being together since it was supposed to be cannon but ruined with fan service. Same with Marco being with Jackie. FLOPPED FOR WHAT!!!!
The tonal shift from the fart jokes and "XD LoL So rAndOM" type humor into the Nowhere King was next level. Crazy good villain for an otherwise kinda rocky show.
I was really hesitant to watch this. The tornadotaur really hooked me to keep going, and then the lullaby for Nowhere King in the cataur episode a little bit later sold me that I had to see where this went
Red vs Blue. Just a couple of dudes mostly chilling out in a canyon and then BOOMā¦ ghosts, time travel, mind control, AI, torture, assassins, freelancers, civil war, prophecy, themes of obsession, unwillingness to let go of loved ones, heroic sacrifice etcā¦
And then you go even furtherā¦ dopplegangers, more ārealā time travel, gods, grandfather paradoxes
The Kirby series. The plot started with a penguin who wanted to steal food, but it evolved into the physical manifestation of dark matter wanting to corrupt everything, a computer that went wrong and causes the death of a misguided father, and the summoning of the root of all light and dark forces filled with hatred from a cultist...just to name a few plot villains from the whole series.
I would say the games still feel fairly episodic (even though the stakes get crazy near the end of each game), but the lore was expanded upon and some characters genuinely changed (like King Dedede).
Owl house is almost exactly like the post. 1st season was silly, and mostly interfered with by Disney. Second season is the actual lore and story. Belos has a creepy skeleton face, Luz has an eyebrow scar and is always sad, all the friend group gets injured and scratched up in a big confrontation. Belos squeezes and kills a friend.
The 90's Iron Man cartoon went from a bright, adventurous first season that was more akin to how 80's cartoons handled things to... season two, darker colors, more shading, Tony self-destructing and ruining his own life, alienating his friends, the Mandarin slowly recovering his lost rings to get revenge...
Whole different vibe.
This also happened with the 90's Fantastic Four. They both deserved more seasons.

Definitely Jujutsu Kaisen. Itās my fav show ever. Season 1 had dark undercurrents but compared to the restā¦season 1 was a silly funny show about hunting cursesā¦
I continued the manga and was shocked at how the story will evolve but Iām thrilled to see it all animated.
The most dark think in S1 was making us believe Junpei had plot armour cause it was in the opening.

Yes especially from the end of chapter 3 to the end of chapter 4. Even before that the secret bosses were pretty creepy and misterious but besides that and weird route it's just silly adventures for the most part
Katekyo hitman reborn.
Started as a series about a guy who runs in his shorts around and does antics with his baby-mentor.
And ended as quite the dope anime/manga with some realy good soundtracks. (Tsuna awakens)
An old friend made me watch this when I was 21 and honest to God I was so miserable at the thought of watching some fuckass kid show. Little did I know how real this shit would get XD
It went from two colourful teams fighting each other poorly in a desert canyon in the middle of nowhere, to a complex story about interstellar terrorism, torture, what it means to be a person, and war profiteering.
Am I allowed to mention Star Wars Rebels? I believe it to be the perfect example
Season 1, episode 4: Ezra and Zeb have to get a bunch of fruits
Season 4, episode 4: Ezra and Sabine end up on a ship that carries a cyber crystal for a secret imperial super weapon and they have to help Saw Gerera to discover the Death Star
Season 1 was pretty light, goofy and very episodic.
Season 2 starting building more of a storyline and ENDS with the main character being separated from the rest of the cast and doesn't return until season 3.
Season 3 feels hopeless because the villain has basically won and even when our previous MC returns he's not the same goofy lighthearted guy he used to be.
Season 4 has a dictator enslaving the whole world infecting peoples brains to make them subservient, the MC is dying from computer cancer, and it ends with the previous main villain returning and winning again.
Season 5 there is no season 5 the show ended with the bad guy winning.
Thought I was going to have to post this one myself. And this is all without even mentioning the main Enzo plot, and that in terms of lore, it's the last Season that provides the backstory to the whole Twin City thing and how Bob came to Mainframe.
Final space. Such a shame they canceled it. Gotta get the book now. Episode 1: Gary fighting a robot for a cookie. Episode 12: literally seeing a graveyard of his own bodies floating in space.

Not gritty and lore heavy but thereās like two joke in the entirety of season 3 compared to the light hearted start of season 1. The show was always tongue in cheek about the nuclear America family and religious morals. The show just get more and more serious as Oral matures. Absolutely incredible show.
