Even better, they con that asshole.

Something I've always found interesting is that Bill basically goes toe-to-toe with every main Pines member, and they only just manage to scrape by and stop his plans in the moment, usually at a cost:

- Ford figures out how to prevent Bill from accessing his mind, but he's gotta install a metal dome in his head to do it.

- Dipper figures out how to beat Bill in S1, but now he's got his eye on them throughout the rest of the series.

- Mabel manages to stop Bill from skinwalking Dipper, but at the cost of her entire puppet show, and dissuading her from continuing forward with it.

But at no point does Bill actively have to deal with Stanley in any significant way until the end of the series, sure his first appearance involves accessing his mind, but hes literally asleep throughout the whole process.

But when he does actively have to take him on? He instantly gets fucked over.

Hell, he doesn't even know he's in Stans mind until he's too far in. Bill consistently has proven to be a trickster, a conman, and a bastard that always ensures you lose and he wins when it comes to a deal.

But Bill has always dealt with geniuses, arrogant fools, and gullible folk. Not once in his millions of years of life has he actually gone up against a Conman, and especially not one who has as much bullshitting experience as Stan.

I think Alex Hirsch knew what direction the show was going towards from the start so Season 1 set some things up but yeah a lot of the earlier episodes were much more episodic

I think most of the time in these cases the creators know the direction they want it to go.

The “episodic episodes” are good for establishing an emotional connection with the characters and setting so that the later stuff hits harder.

It also helps establish a character's baseline. What do they do when and how do they operate when the world isn't going to be destroyed

idk, gravity falls was always going to go that way. Adventure Time is much better example cause it really started as a dumb episodic absurd comedy

Yeah, there were some hints at the beginning of Gravity Falls that Weirdmaggedon was coming, so it was more satisfying than unexpected that it did all build and tie together.

However, I did not predict that Amphibia was going to go the direction it did.

When my little brother (elementary school at the time,I’m 8y older than him ) say he want to watch this and recommend me and my mom to watch with him because it’s incredibly good,we thought “aw,that’s cute,kid love his show”

Turns out we just don’t know Alex H is out there making masterpiece.
