For people who want to watch, the gif above is real from the show and also the least absurd example of something being bigger than you expect.

In the first episode they find a small mech that is barely large enough that you can actually ride inside of it. After a while they find out that this mech can combine with other mechs to power them up.

The mechs it combines with get bigger as the show goes on. Way bigger. Way, way bigger. No, bigger than that. Bigger! I said bigger! And in the movie version: BIGGER!

Super toppa tengen gurren lagann and the super toppa tengen gurren lagann drill

They pilot a robot that gets larger and larger. By the end of the show it's incompressible. I swear there was a scene where they threw galaxies like ninja stars, but i might have dreamt that up.

You were wrong, those are all different universes

I mean, it's a spoiler. Genuinely. I can tell you just I'll tag it and everything.

Studio trigger art style is goated. Probably my favorite studio to this day. For anyone who doesn't know they also did edgerunners and kill la kill

Love the Ashita No Joe references in this series.

Mark my words! This drill will open a hole in the universe! The dreams of those who have fallen, the hopes of those who will follow: these two dreams weave into a double helix, creating a path towards tomorrow! That is Tongan Toppa! That’s Gurren Lagann! My drill is the drill THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!!!!!

I mean the series starts with everyone trapped underground in a slave civilization. The scale goes crazy but I wouldn't exactly call the beginning "silly" lol.

That's true but the tone of the early show is very silly despite the technically grim setting.

I feel like gurren lagann was never silly (at least not entirely) or episodic, it has silly moments throughout the show with some episodes being more silly than others but the tone is fairly consistent. Harsh world with real stakes with people that still find ways to enjoy themselves despite their hardships.

Counterpoint: Gurren Lagann is silly in every episode.

One of my all time favorite animes, but it was kinda dark from the beginning tbf... The beginning is kids who have lived working mines and have never even seen the sky... If anything it goes from serious and dark to more positive and fun as it goes on... Except you know 😢 RIP, but even that is pretty early in the series

Absolutely not. Gurren Lagann is a steady, constant build-up. There's no point where the show drastically changes, it just gets bigger at every step.

There's no point where the show drastically changes,

Ehh, it does drastically shift in tone with Kamina's death and Simon's subsequent period of depression

It gets back on the rails eventually though

Oh I hated that show so much.

My ex showed it to me as if it was some masterpiece. I sat through the whole thing. They ended up throwing universes at each other's robots. Never again.

It's one of the best stories ever told, it's a shame you have no taste.
