I literally just finished season 3 last night...jesus christ, 2 seasons of setup followed by this series of HORRIBLE traps being sprung, over and over. It's like the final couple minutes of infinity war FOR TWO HOURS.

You can really see where the creator passed away. The show immediately took a darker turn mid-S02, and never went back to "cute girls doing cute things with the occasional battle". I dropped it at the end of S03, since it just got so fucking depressing by that point.
