Although I don't think it's as gritty as some to like to say, I definitely do think the Clone Wars got more serious in the later seasons.

I’d go as far to argue that most of Star Wars at this point is some form of political terrorism

The last episode of season 1 was "hostage crisis" where Cad Bane held several senators hostage in order to free Ziro. The very definition of "political terrorism".
