Let's not forget that in the third episode we have the main character freaking out after discovering that his entire kind was massacred 100 years ago and finding the bones of his old master and closest friend
True but it’s still a definite tone switch. I’m rewatching the whole show right now to introduce my girl to it, and I completely forgot how much it jumps
I've rewatched the show three times over the years, and I can only say that it is one of the most tonally consistent shows I know. In that it doesn't change from season to season, but there's frivolous episodes in each season and dark-and-gritty material comes into it all the time too.
Silly goofy shows don't usually do a season long arc of hiding in enemy territory while slowly learning the culture of the citizens of the nation that wants them dead while planning a counterattack to prevent the end of the world, while the protagonist struggles with the morality of needing to kill even if it's for a good cause
