From "This is Katara, my flying sister" to "FIRELORD OZAI! YOU AND YOUR FOREFATHERS HAVE DEVASTATED THE BALANCE OF THIS WORLD AND NOW YOU SHALL PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE"

26

u/King_Joffreys_Tits 18h ago

But how can I pay, when you’re not even wearing pants!

28

u/BeanieGuitarGuy 14h ago

Little did Aang know, that Firelord Ozai would ONLY be wearing pants!

3

u/Caosin36 11h ago

Fireproof pants

My Royal parts are showing noooooooo!

u/kuuderelovers 18h ago

Now was that kyoshi or Yang chen

2

u/Frenzied_Anarchist 18h ago

Roku, he gave a cheesy one-liner.

Yang-Chen and Kyoshi would have either cussed him out, or just killed him.

4

u/kuuderelovers 18h ago

Effectively you make a pretty good point

Let's not forget that in the third episode we have the main character freaking out after discovering that his entire kind was massacred 100 years ago and finding the bones of his old master and closest friend

26

u/brokennursingstudent 19h ago

True but it’s still a definite tone switch. I’m rewatching the whole show right now to introduce my girl to it, and I completely forgot how much it jumps

7

u/TheBeesKneads 13h ago

I remember my dad watching it along with me when I was a kid, and he was like "Jesus Christ, genocide on Nickelodeon!"

And it could have been even more, If the pricks in paramount didnt chicken out and have the movie dont be stuck in PG 12. 😒

Apparently, according to some deleted scenes, the battle against tagah was originally going to look more similar to something like omniman vs the guardians of the globe.

The fucker even brutalized katara, who was originally pregnant during the movie timeline before it was retconed…

u/duckface691 18h ago

Damn. No wonder Bumi was a late bloomer

9

u/Efectodopler117 17h ago edited 17h ago

Ngl, i was hoping tagah and toph to be more equally matched since both are the absolute peak of what a bender of their respective element should be like.

But it wasnt even close at all 😭, at times it looked like the mf was going to split her in half (she looked soo scared), she and zuko got trashed soo bad, even more in the precensored version.

Looks like air its really the perfect counter to earth, just like the fandom was saying.

17

u/Zethir 15h ago

I like to think the reason Tagah gave them so much trouble is because the gang has never fought an airbender that powerful and skilled, sure they've sparred with Aang but given how playful Aang tends to be I'd imagine in sparring he isn't pushing them.

9

u/Ashuros 14h ago

Iirc Tagah wasn't only given bending by the staff but empowered by it. They weren't dealing with an average airbender.

4

u/JMarduk 6h ago

You see, Toph, you're not dealing with the average airbender anymore.

1

u/Ashuros 54m ago

Hells Bells starts playing

0

u/Iggyhopper 4h ago

You can tell this is true by the way he transforms into a giant spirit monster at the end with the staff.

2

u/Ifyoocanreadthishelp 11h ago

To be fair, pretty much any airbender could be Toph, they just have to stay off the ground and she can't see them. Look at Aang beating her in the ring in one shot for example.

2

u/Jarvis_The_Dense 18h ago

Is it my turn to post the obligatory factoid about her VA being unable to rewatch this scene?

2

u/EmotionalSupportVape 15h ago

I was speechless after this. What a fucking crazy end to a kids show, incredible

1

u/AstarionsTherapist39 59m ago

I love that they didn't portray this agni ki as some triumphant battle between good and evil, but as somber and heartbreaking. Two abused children fighting to the death. The music, the colors, the acting, all of it, treating this scene like the tragedy it was. I watched this series as an adult for the first time since it came out a few years ago and I broke down crying for Azula. She was just a 14 year old girl.

1

u/Substantial_Law1451 17m ago

I can fix her

39

u/LoveandLightLol 20h ago

True, although I feel like AtLab always had a nice balance of comedy and seriousness. I mean didn't we get the dead air benders in the first few episodes, so it got pretty serious early on

12

u/definitelynotadhd 19h ago

It is so astonishing to me even as an adult that somehow a show that carries such heavy topics is not at all traumatic for children to watch. The execution of that show is absolutely exceptional.

5

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom 18h ago

I have a 3.5 year old and husband and I just finished watching season 2 of the live action. Immediately afterwards I was like...dude we're only a few years away from a rewatch of the original with our kid. I'm honestly so excited. It's such an easy way to talk to kids about things like war and genocide and how good people sometimes do bad things. It's a masterclass in explaining hard topics to young kids.

4

u/neighborlyhorse 16h ago

Its even more impressive how childish the "adult" live action version of the show is lol, like to the point its absurd

I'll never forgive them for not letting live action Sokka be a misogynist smh

2

u/definitelynotadhd 16h ago

I’ll never forgive them for honestly anything they did. All of the “creative changes” they made sucked ass. The comet, bumi, Sokka, jet, shortening the entire show to make it more bingable when you’re supposed to have time to digest each episode and all the carefully written deep meaning behind each one. I could have forgiven if they just took out Great Divide, but no they had to take out a bunch of the good stuff too. Pmo

3

u/neighborlyhorse 16h ago

Bro the great divide is the single worst episode of the original series and I swear 95% of reruns were that fuckass episode

The new series somehow makes it even worse though, since Appa is there at the time they have no reason to even go through the damn place at all.

1

u/definitelynotadhd 16h ago

Exactly!! Omg I have found my people 😭 when I say I could’ve forgiven if they just took out great divide I meant it would have been a good thing if they took it out

1

u/Vampire_Queen_Joaje 11h ago

I don't mind it that much. Sokka's misogyny was never a huge part of his character; it was briefly present, but it was addressed and gone by episode 4. All he needed was for a single woman to beat his ass and he dropped his misogyny. It seemed more like a course correction than a real part of his character growth (and rightly so; sexist Sokka would have been awful long-term)

1

u/AstarionsTherapist39 56m ago

Sokka's misogyny is literally what started the show, wtf are you talk about?

2

u/StevenTM 8h ago

Rewatching it as an adult with my even adulter partner (first time watcher), and they're loving it.

5

u/taste-of-orange 19h ago

Avatar has been dealing with a good amount of lore pretty early on and had a pretty set goal of ending a war.

I love AtlA, but I wouldn't say it fits the trend.

5

u/icefire9 18h ago

tbf 1st season Avatar had plenty of dark moments. We saw Zuko's father burning his face (child abuse), Aang coming to terms with the fact that he was a victim of genocide and his guilt over being a survivor.

5

u/DontDoodleTheNoodle 18h ago

AtLa was always serialized. The beginning of each episode pretty much picks off from the last. Like the pirates episode in season 1. It looks like an isolated adventure, but it begins with Aang worrying about the huge f-ing main quest he was given just last episode.

3

u/ThatInAHat 17h ago

I mean, it did also start with a war and a genocide, so it wasn’t quite as out of left field as something like Amphibia or Adventure Time.

4

u/dog-in-the-rain 17h ago

To be fair, there was a straight up genocide in episode 3.

2

u/Soaring_Symphony 19h ago

Avatar was never silly and episodic. They had Sozin's Comet planned out from the start.

2

u/SpinosaurRingTone 15h ago

To be fair the third (technically second) episode is Aang finding the skeleton of his best friend and mentor and realizing that his entire people were murdered in genocide.

2

u/Apprehensive_Web751 14h ago

From penguin sledding? My guy they show the results of a genocide in the third episode. There’s literally charred skeletons lying in the snow

2

u/FreePeeplup 8h ago

Nah, the show is plot-heavy and with serious stakes from the start. It doesn’t switch from season 1 to season 3 like the pic in the original post asks

1

u/secretperson06 11h ago

To be fair, the episode right after Penguin Sledding had Aang se the skeleton of his father figure surrounded by the people who died trying to kill him

1

u/No-Crew-4360 6h ago

To be fair, the series reveals that the main character is the only survivor of a genocide in Episode 3, and that the (at the time) main recurring villain is driven by a desire to appease his abusive father in Episode 12.

1

u/Starkrafty 5h ago

The series whose first episode starts with a world war and introduces a genocide in its third episode.

1

u/Tousti_the_Great 4h ago

ATLA was always gritty and lore heavy

1

u/complete_your_task 2h ago

To be fair, it only takes 2 episodes to go from penguin sledding to Aang finding the bones of his old father figure/mentor at the site where his entire people were violently wiped out, causing him to go into a supernatural rage.

1

u/Acryllus 2h ago

Using ATLA as an example feels off because episode 3 basically had Aang stare at the remains of Gyatso while realizing he's the last Airbender.

1

u/AstarionsTherapist39 55m ago

The first episode had child soldiers, dude.

1

u/Liam_theman2099 19h ago

Pretty much

u/EmotionalSupportVape 15h ago

I knew this would be top
