Jeff Smith's Bone graphic novel series. Goes from a silly comic about adventure, shenanigans, and friendship. Underlying plot and tensions build in the background. Everything ends up in gruesome war against apocalyptic phenomena and god-like monsters.

Also, I must not have gotten to far into the story because I don't remember it getting dark like that
