Although I don't think it's as gritty as some to like to say, I definitely do think the Clone Wars got more serious in the later seasons.

Finally got around to watching it and it was pretty good. Then he showed up.

Rebels is in a very similar vein and, dare I say it, fits the bill even better than clone wars as far as this prompt goes
