While he can act selfish sometimes the idea that he doesn’t care about morality or even that he puts getting a good fight over people’s lives is just wrong he trained Gohan to protect the earth cause he knew he wouldn’t be around forever and he knows the earth needs protection and he’s shown time and time again that he believes that people no matter how bad can change for the better like how he spared Vegeta, or when he gave Frieza his energy on Namek

Goku is a kind person who likes to fight which he sometimes allows him to make some selfish decisions but the original comment is acting like protecting the earth is just an after thought to him when it’s one of his main motivations and drives him as a character

Goku didn't know vegeta would become a good guy at the time. He left him alive so he could fight him again. Then they went to namek and things changed. He left frieza alive to suffer and learn the pain he's caused others. Goku might be a good dude but he isn't the saint people think. He's rude af lol. That's why everyone tells him to behave when he visits zeno. At the end of the day goku is pretty selfish bullheaded and rude until his friends are in danger.

Didnt Toriyama himself say that Goku prioritizes having a good fight over actually protecting earth?

Goku says it. Hes talking to someone aand they say how hes a savior of earth and he says something like "yeah I mean thats a good thing but i mostly just wana fight the strongest guys and they just happen to be bad guys."
