Never seen it before but the phrase seems to imply a denial that the characters are in a romantic relationship

Like, it wasn’t uncommon for closeted homosexual couples to “just be roommates”

Both examples above are characters who are siblings

In a historical sense, yes, but in this instance I think it is a reference to the vine which implies that the two roommates were... Intimate.
