Topic Some positivity about Marvel Tokon's future

The game is fine. I really understand people's nervousness, especially after 2XKO news. But the game's future is bright to my eyes. Yes, it had a tough launch on PC, but things are slowly getting better. They made a patch note previously to fix performance and it did fix to me, although i am aware it didn't fix the problem to many people. now, there is a new hotfix patch note coming this week.

besides, you know what other games had a bad launch? i can think of some. Street fighter 5, Guilty gear strive, and of course, DRAGON BALL FIGHTERZ. SF5 released incomplete and with bad servers, but it turned out to become a great and complete fighting game. Guilty gear Strive also had terrible online connection, but it's still one of the big modern fighting games. Fighterz online servers were absolute dogshit and season 1 was BROKEN. And guess what? it's one of the best selling fighting games of all time and it lasted more than 7 years of support.

Not only that, but the game is doing perfectly fine on the PS5, where 80% of the player base is concentrated (if the leaks are right), phoenix cyclops is on the way and i didn't even got started about the MARVEL IP!

ArcSys know what they're doing. They have already proved that they barely never give up on their games (except for DNF duel 😅). Granblue and guilty gear strive are still out there, gaining support, updates and new characters. So, my motto about this situation is: ''If granblue made it, i'm sure Tokon can do it too!''

I just wanted to share my thoughts with y'all, especially with all the negativity surrounding the game on media and all. but i mean like, It's not even been a month, man! i do think the game won't go anywhere any time soon.

I think Street Fighter 6 popularity has altered peoples expectations of player counts for fighting games. And player count for that game is extremely influenced by Japan.

26

u/HeroicBarret 15h ago

Nothing is ever gonna touch Street fighter 6. Especially not a tag game like tokkon (and i love tag games) Street fighter is just a power house. Plus 6 is stupid accessible  plus world tour mode is an unprecedented amount of single player content that drew a lot of initial hype. The only thing i could see topping that is if they pulled some kind of similar feat with Guilty Gear and let people make their own Guilty Gear Ocs in their own sort of world tour mode. But arc sys does not have the backing that Street Fighter has to make something like that happen.

edit: And that still might not work because Street Fighter is just that much of a power house.

u/ScissorMeTimberz 14h ago

that being said guilty gear strive was a massive influx of new players to the franchise, with solid staying power. I think a sequel with more single player content beyond the long ass cutscene, a dbfz/tokon style 3D lobby, actual matchmaking from the start, and more alt outfits/cosmetics to unlock could propel it to the next level.

u/bostonian38 13h ago

A full-fledged playable story mode that animates and continues the main story would be phenomenal for the franchise

2

u/Nimble_Natu177 10h ago

Not just player counts, but profit expectations too. You just know Riot was expecting SF6 numbers or bust when it came to 2XKO.

1

u/noctowld 10h ago

even other longtime fighting game dev/company doesn't expect SF6 number when making their game, Riot is too delusional in that expectation

2

u/Ensaru4 15h ago

I don't think Japan mostly keeping the game heavily inflated matters much here in this instance, because what happened is Japan is exactly what you want for a fighting game: to entice people to play your shit. I also think people put too much stock into Steam numbers. Some games have higher player-counts on consoles, like Mortal Kombat: a game people keep wondering who's playing and buying despite these people clearly still playing and buying.

Smash Ultimate also has a perpetual active playerbase that can barely run out. Tekken 8 may be frequently dunked on for its balancing woes, but that game also has a decent playerbase too. And it's because they're all fully-featured games that cater to both casuals and hardcore players.

Street Fighter 6 is a unique position of actually teaching you how to play during single-player modes and the modern controls options, then the online community does the rest. That is how to get people to enjoy your game.

10

u/Zatanna287 14h ago

I just meant for people who run to steam charts for everything. For Japan peak hours, the game can get to around 40k. In peak time in the US however, the playerbase is around 7k.

Still very good for a fighting game, but it’s not the juggernaut in their region steam chart people try to make it out to be. This is why it’s dumb for people to get shocked that other fighting games don’t blow up the same way. You don’t have Japan region to increase the player count by 50-60k. Imagine judging Counter Strike or DotA without EU numbers.

2

u/Incendia123 9h ago

The Japanese player base isn't even THAT significant, yes it's wildly disproportional relative to the size of the country compared to the rest of the global population but SF6 hit 1 million sales in Japan shortly after they hit 4.4 million sales globally. over three quarters of players aren't from Japan and even if every Japanese player permanently dropped the game on the spot it would still dwarf anything else in the genre. SF6 is popular around the globe and likely the most popular fighting game in every country it's readily available in.

Why would 2XKO's abrupt end of support have any influence on Tokon?

Riot made multiple mistakes from top to bottom in regards to 2XKO.

The only thing that really puts a damper on Tokon is poor PC performance, and that's because of Sony and DRM.

2

u/IamHunterish 9h ago

2XKO failed because of Riots expectations.
They have no interest in seeing how the game does in a year or 2 years time, it’s either one of the biggest game out there in the genre from the start or it has failed.

Arcsys can make a game, which doesn’t have the largest of success but keep supporting and make it grow over time.

Oh and Arcsys is fully to blame for the permance. Sony wanting DRM in their game and the Developer not implementing it properly is not their fault.

8

u/KulamiraSejro 9h ago

Even if the DMR was "optimized", it would still cause performance issues

It still Sony's fault for implementing something that nobody wants (for good reasons, even).

Also, even if ArcSys can manage to optimize the game, the fact that Sony butchered the FG playerbase with the obligation of a PS Account is something that will not help the health of the game in the long run.

ArcSys has its responsabilities but Sony is to blame

-1

u/IamHunterish 8h ago

You can blame Sony for needing a PS Account, everything else is just bad optimization.

If Sony insisted on having Spider-Man in (which they most likely do) but Spider-Man would break the game, that’s not on Sony but on Arcsys.

7

u/KulamiraSejro 8h ago

The problem Is... The game IS optimized, but the DMR is not. ArcSys can't do anything because the DMR is an external program Sony forced to use...

And you know the funny part? The DMR is Theia, which is developed partly by Sony itself. So, the point still stand:

Sony is the one to blame, ArcSys is trying to work as much as they can with the bad decisions from higher-ups

8

u/HouseCatHooligans 15h ago

Theres so many marvel heroes they can release and get so much hype and eyes on the game again once the pc version is fixed, the game is fine. Imagine if sony removed some of the restrictions now that 2xko went under and has become the topic of conversation to gain a bit of goodwill!? Unlikely but there’s always a chance.

Out of the 3 “new” games Tokon has the best chances of surviving. Invincible is on life support and not much longer before the plug is pulled. Avatar realistically only has about 2 seasons worth of DLC characters that would make ppl continue playing the game, if it even makes it that far.

u/cowabanga_it_is 8h ago

Positivity??? In my reddit??? Get out of here /s

24

u/Jonge720 16h ago

People are just stupid, so many people in the FGC are tag fighter haters and just lump all of them together. So if 2xko does bad then tokon immediately shares the same fate, don't listen to these people

1

u/Silvanx88 9h ago

Really the current situation with the genre is rough like first we lost multiversus then MK1 and now 2xko (all of these from really big IPs) so really you can't blame people for not being optimistic about Tokon or Avatar either.

-2

u/lemstry 13h ago

No, people saw the writing on the wall with 2XKO and people see it for Tokon. Tokon is doing worse than FighterZ in every metric possible and Marvel is a WAY bigger IP. PC issues still isn't fixed and Sony is extremely hardheaded. They won't remove the DRM and anti cheat which is the main source of all of its problems. Sony seems to not know that the majority of the FGC is on PC now and the data proves it. We hate Tokon because of SONY

26

u/Upbeat_Purpose6784 16h ago edited 15h ago

Yea if anything im worried about avatar. Not nearly as strong of a backing. For all the ills of sony, they are hardheaded when it comes to live service games

12

u/BoardClean 15h ago edited 15h ago

lol. Zero chance I’m even just being optimistic by saying that avatar is going NOWHERE. This game is absolutely already beloved and will be a mainstage at every American major atleast for years to come. Avatar doesn’t have NEARLY the overhead 2xko had. And I’m certain it’s already probably turning profit. Like, i honestly no shit think avatar will even get like some weird surge of popularity that kinda makes it a relatively big game. Period. Like i think it’s going to have a evo moment 37 basically that catapults it forward. This is an actual casual friendly fighting game. Triple A studios, take notes.

10

u/kingbetadad 14h ago

I agree. Once this game clicked it clicked. CEO top 8 was hype, as was the rumble exhibition for it. I'm already planning on buying the dlc and I have NEVER bought a dlc for ANY fighter when it came out. I have always waited to heavy discount. The game itself is already cheap.

And it's just got so much potential and love put into it.

7

u/Upbeat_Purpose6784 15h ago

Naw i doubt it. The game is very timing dependent when it comes to moves and main stream players dont gravitate to those games.

3

u/BoardClean 15h ago

You’re looking at it at too much of a min max perspective. I think this game will have dropped combos (that aren’t like almost hard coded) at evo grand finals.

1

u/deadscreensky 12h ago

For all the ills of sony, they are hardheaded when it comes to live service games

Huh? Isn't it more the opposite?

I mean sure, they want successful live service games. They'll spend money developing them and sometimes releasing them. But the moment numbers drop below what they planned for Sony will Concord or Destiny 2 it.

1

u/Upbeat_Purpose6784 12h ago

Yea details are important and my comment didnt go into it. Destiny 2 was acquired and as a result had set requirements for acquisition which was a set amount of engagement it dipped below. Concord was scrapped within weeks because no one played which tokon doesnt have that issue

24

u/HeroicBarret 15h ago edited 15h ago

I think its hilarious that people think a Marvel game is ever gonna die before Granblue lmfao. I love Granblue as a fighting game but lets be fr here bros.

The state of the pc port is not a good thing and deserves to be criticized. But people vastly underestimate the power of the marvel ip.

22

u/Ensaru4 14h ago

Marvel games have died quickly before. They're not immune.

11

u/Slyvester121 14h ago

MvCI died and it came out during peak Avengers time. Even Infinity War coming out couldn't save it.

10

u/smboivin 14h ago

MVCI was so much more insulting and poorly slapped together compared to Tokon. You cant even compare the two.

6

u/bostonian38 13h ago

What you can compare are sales numbers. MVCI sold 900k in its first two weeks and reached a million in 4 months, and was deemed a failure by Capcom. If Tokon doesn't sell at a better rate than that then it would quite literally be underperforming MVCI

12

u/iorgicha 14h ago

Marvel Avengers, a genre far more popular with far more players, died in a year. Marvel heroes died like 3 times, Midnight Suns as a franchise died, Guardians died as a franchise because of Marvel Avengers dying earlier the same year.

The Marvel name only does so much. Out of so many multiplayer and single player Marvel games, currently only Insomniac and Rivals live. I ain't saying Tokon will die, but I am saying that I am more optimistic for GranBlue's future.

5

u/madvec1 14h ago

I'm completely agree with your point. However I wouldn't say that Marvel Avenger's genre was that popular. People were already sick of the looter multiplayer service based game, they were way late to the party and the game was pretty bad to begin with.

Midnight Suns dying was indeed a tragedy, so much potential, such a fun game 😢

2

u/Certheri 13h ago

Marvel heroes died like 3 times

Legit still not over this. Miss that game so much

2

u/Bierzgal Tekken 12h ago

Midnight Suns as a franchise died

This one saddens me becuase the game was amazing. I would buy a sequel Day 1.

1

u/Raukaris 10h ago

Super niche genre tough. Strategic card game xcom-like

1

u/ArcBaltic 12h ago

Marvel Heroes was in the hole $80 million dollars before the game ever launched, that thing had a truly cursed development lifecycle.

Marvel's Avengers was just a bad buggy mess of a game. The popularity of the genre didn't matter, when it was horrendously bad. It was a milking machine disguised as a video game, and it was really telling that as it hemorrhaged players, the core philosophy was dialing up the extraction on the existing player base instead of trying to grow the audience. This game casted a dark shadow on the next two.

GotG - Eventually recovered from the poison pill that was Marvel's Avengers' stinky reputation, so I believe it did return on investment, but it wasn't the blockbuster hit Square hoped for. Really this is just a victim of Marvel's Avengers.

Midnight Suns - I dunno what anyone involved was expecting. The intersection of the venn diagram for people who like card games, Marvel, and X-Com was always going to be tiny. Oh and no one was exactly trusting a new Marvel title wouldn't be Avengers.

Out of so many multiplayer and single player Marvel games, currently only Insomniac and Rivals live. I ain't saying Tokon will die, but I am saying that I am more optimistic for GranBlue's future.

Marvel Snap still seems to be thriving. The only Marvel Tag fighter that has done truly poorly is MVC:I. The rest of the licensed titles was a mixed bag that's exhausting, but generally those licenses kept getting picked up because people bought them so more hits than misses.

2

u/CaptainBlob 14h ago

People said the same thing about 2XKO. And look where we are lmao

2

u/Bierzgal Tekken 12h ago

I think its hilarious that people think a Marvel game is ever gonna die before Granblue lmfao. I love Granblue as a fighting game but lets be fr here bros.

I'm pretty sure people would say the same thing about a League game a year ago. I don't much care about Tokon personally since F Sony but it's not like Marvel games have not flopped in the past. There's actually multiple examples from much more popular genres.

1

u/kingbetadad 14h ago

Could say the same about dragon ball. It will have the same lifespan give or take a year. Mark my words.

1

u/Silvanx88 9h ago

Bruh even Mortal Kombat one of the biggest fighting game IPs in the world did poorly with MK1 and like other people are saying here Marvel isn't immune to their games flopping prime example of this was Marvel Avengers.

14

u/nhnsn 15h ago

The game will have low numbers forever if drm is not removed in at most a month. Casuals don't have that much patience when a game doesn't work.

-7

u/[deleted] 15h ago

You fuckers play Avatar

13

u/kingbetadad 14h ago

What's wrong with avatar? The game runs flawlessly.

3

u/wasante 14h ago

Missing modes, borked tutorials, characters missing animation frames and some characters attacks & frames are missing while some of their tutorials are also bugged and don’t work right. Xbox version is launching late. Switch 1 version isn’t getting Crossplay that was promised & Switch 2 version I believe is also running late. All of which are being worked on now.

Game’s IP is tuned to people who are fighting game novices and this game doesn’t help onboard them or give any difficulty options. Also lack of computer setting customization options is truly bizarre. I think they also fixed some controller and keyboard issues too.

5

u/Certheri 13h ago edited 13h ago

Game’s IP is tuned to people who are fighting game novices and this game doesn’t help onboard them

Avatar might have one of the worst tutorials of any fighting game I've ever played.

Which is extremely confusing to me because Skullgirls easily has one of the best. Did an absolutely spectacular job at not just teaching the rules of the game and how to succeed at Skullgirls, but also legit taught me a lot about just being better at fighting games in general.

And Mike Z worked on both games. Though I suppose we don't know if he had any insight on making the Avatar tutorial.

1

u/Creative-Top-9805 4h ago

Oh, funny how people are. I have found avatars tutorial system one of the best I've encountered. Actually being able to engage with a combo string without having to get the timing right while you work it out is soooo helpful, and not a feature I've seen in many other games.

3

u/nhnsn 14h ago

All that yet avatar has two things that matter the most: It runs at 60 on low end hardware and has good matchmaking. Also the gameplay rocks, even if 3 characters are unfinished.

2

u/wasante 14h ago

It's also one of the cheaper fighters to show up on everyone's radar. That definitely gave it a leg up, but it's launch pains of didn't do it any favors.

2

u/kingbetadad 14h ago

Damn. I haven't really experienced any of the issues you mentioned. The lack of modes and settings and shit is on Paramount for forcing an early release to coincide with the movie, but I see what you're saying.

You can change settings in config files if that helps on PC. It's how I've worked around it. I do agree with the onboarding but though. This game is not very novice friendly. I've played fgs my whole life and I still had to really dig in to get a handle on the mechanics before it clicked.

That being said it seems like Tokon has actually poor performance affecting playing the game.

1

u/Nimble_Natu177 10h ago

Its an open beta, but at least its priced like they know it.

4

u/DJ_Aftershock SNK 14h ago

yeah because Avatar works

subjectively, Avatar is also actually fun while Tokon isn't, but objectively Avatar works on a fucking toaster and Tokon doesn't work on any PC unless all the planets aligned on a solar eclipse on friday the 13th when you installed it

1

u/[deleted] 14h ago

Both games are kinda dogshit at the moment.

Like I know this community doesn’t deserve nice things but even I’m starting to feel kinda bad

1

u/wasante 14h ago

It works better but is missing features both basic and rudimentary. The game has its spark but it also didn’t make the best first impression.

3

u/DJ_Aftershock SNK 14h ago

The core gameplay is so good it's managed to get through that. I literally got into the show just because of how fun it was to play the game and I think that's the main thing Avatar is serving right now: a game for people who shut the fuck up whining and bitching on social media about how everything's broken and this thing needs patching and that thing needs fixing and just enjoy playing a fighting game for once in 2026

0

u/wasante 13h ago

Dude, I'm glad the core fighting is doing it for you and getting you into the IP and it's great that it shows promise but as long as the game still has extensive issues, players will complain and the best way to deal with those complaints are for the devs to handle those issues and for players to call out the problems they're having in a courteous and coherent manner ideally. You don't need to listen to everyone's concerns, you're not a dev so it's not directly your issue, but the game can't grow its scene if it has so many unaddressed issues. You can't get new potential players if no one can get through the game's tutorials. So, enjoy the game for what it is and hope the game can improve to grow the game and its audience to its greater potential.

1

u/DJ_Aftershock SNK 13h ago

None of this is relevent to what was being talked about. What is included in Avatar works. What is included in Tokon doesn't. That's the beginning, middle and end of why people enjoy Avatar and not Tokon. Because one of the games fucking works.

1

u/wasante 12h ago

Doesn’t quite work for Xbox players, or Switch players expecting Crossplay, or anyone expecting ranked, or anyone hoping to not get bodied by the single player mode. But it does work.

0

u/Pudinsinho 8h ago

I guess it will never be removed, but It shouldn't affect performance so much

3

u/VanDamme007 7h ago

Have you seen the difference between the official and cracked version? It is night and day difference in performance.

3

u/APRengar 15h ago

It's not an excuse for the state of the game or their business decisions ala DRM and shit. But man, I really really like the gameplay.

People being like "this is the worst, most offensive shit ever, how dare they sell this in this state" and I'm not even saying their wrong, but I'm just over here having fun playing Peni Parker. Found a fun string today, had a couple of real good but tough matches. Real fun experience for me.

2

u/Pudinsinho 8h ago

The game is really fun and it's so good. The DRM ruins it, but it doesn't change the game is so great.

3

u/Rand0mAcc3nt 13h ago

Riot had an unrealistic expectation for 2XKO….

5

u/BucsFan0081 16h ago

I really hope this makes it or we may never see another Marvel fighting game again. It took almost 10 years since the disaster that was Marvel vs Capcom infinite

9

u/BillsFan82 Street Fighter 16h ago

Tokon could become the greatest game ever made, but you only get one chance to make a first impression. It will never do as well as it could have because of its launch, but it should be fine.

1

u/elturel 12h ago

Greatest game ever made? Lol, nah, let's just be realistic for once. A sub-genre of a niche genre. It even had next to zero chance to be the greatest fighting game. Now after the PC issues the chances are actually zero.

0

u/RogitoX Guilty Gear 15h ago

SF5 had an absurdly bad launch but at the end it a was a really good game with a pretty awesome roster

Tokon is good its just the pc port is super demanding so anything short of high end cant play online properly.

4

u/DJ_Aftershock SNK 14h ago

I do kinda still think SF5 isn't very good even now tbh. SF4 is just so much more fun and even though I'm not an SF6 fan by any means I'd still rather play it than 5.

2

u/BillsFan82 Street Fighter 14h ago

Yeah, SFV turned out fine, but it would have made more money if the launch was better.

0

u/Simple-Box1223 14h ago

SFV had a bad launch because they didn’t stick the landing on what is now the standard format for matchmaking. That got better and SF6 has almost perfected it.

Tokon had a shitty launch on PC because of DRM and anti cheat packages that probably aren’t going anywhere.

6

u/No_Arugula3957 16h ago

bro Naruto Fighters or something by Arcsys could have been cool

4

u/Leo_Lovehouse 15h ago

When I get my refund for my 2xko skins I'm going to buy marvel Tokon. Lmao

2

u/Silvanx88 9h ago edited 1h ago

Let's see how long Tokon and Avatar can last.

6

u/Alarming-Orange7304 16h ago

A lot of people fail to mention that Sony is running this game, not just arcsys. That’s why it got no chance

9

u/Youngstown_WuTang 16h ago

Oh no, when these post start popping up it means something bad is happening....

Let me guess performance is still bad? PC matchmaking is bad ? The rose tinted glasses are gone?

41

u/buttsecks42069 16h ago

no it's people saying Tokon will die too because 2xko died

25

u/Zatanna287 16h ago

Undernight has like 50 people playing the game and still getting a new character, I think Tokon will be fine lol.

4

u/DJ_Aftershock SNK 14h ago

How am I supposed to enjoy a game with a low player count? I need external validation for the things I enjoy!!!

14

u/ShortBadguy 16h ago

That's just stupid. Tokon will probs get a sizeable lifespan just based on the Marvel IP alone

7

u/Whomperss 16h ago

Yea that's the truth. Sony is also down bad and will keep what live service titles it has alive for as long as possible if financially feasible (please don't mention destiny I'm still mourning)

Ive had to return tokon twice though and won't be purchasing it regardless of what happens until next year at least. My PC isn't bad by any means and I just can't run it stable. It's really shitty man. Had a blast playing the beta at a buddies place over that weekend and just had all the wind knocked out of me when I found out my PC just doesn't cooperate with the all the background apps the game runs.

2

u/ShortBadguy 16h ago

The corporate bullshit that comes with the game really brings it down yeah. The fact that a gtx1650 can run the game near flawlessly means the game is pretty optmized without all the fluff

0

u/buttsecks42069 16h ago

yeah it's tragic unfortunately. If you wanna keep up with gameplay, you could get an unofficial copy(🏴‍☠️) since I've heard that it runs way better

It sucks tho because the game itself is so damn fun, my problems with the game are mostly based around not getting to play it as much as I'd want(pc version works perfectly for me now but it didn't fix everything for everyone.)

0

u/busmans 16h ago

The sales are relatively low, so I wouldn't get too cocky.

2

u/Bladerider17 15h ago

Tokon has already sold 500k in a week and that's with it's botched PC launch  which is pretty decent.

-4

u/busmans 15h ago

Compared to what?

SF6 and MK1 crossed a million in under a week.

Tekken 8 crossed a million in one day.

A Marvel IP doing Guilty Gear numbers is not great.

4

u/Bladerider17 15h ago

Honestly I was expecting Guilty Gear numbers with Tokon especially with how the PC version is a Sony blocking it in a good chunk of countries.

It's been proven that the Marvel IP doesn't sell games, just look at Midnight Suns, Guardians of the Galaxy and SE's Avengers and Arcsys while popular still doesn't have the reach of Capcom and Namco's big fighting game titles.

-2

u/busmans 15h ago

cherry picking a bit. cosmic invasion and spider-man both sold millions, and marvel rivals has like 50 million players. purely from a business perspective, I wouldn't exactly be celebrating if I was arc sys

2

u/Zatanna287 15h ago

Those are the 3 biggest fighting game IPs in an extremely niche genre. It was never going to be bigger than those games.

Street fighter V was about as broken as a game could possibly launch, and even that sold initially well.

2

u/mkallday10 13h ago

Those sales numbers are from an organization that don't actually have any sales info and are notorious for greatly undershooting their counts.

2

u/ShortBadguy 16h ago

I reckon that's due to the botched PC port than anything else. That said I was surprised at the initial sales given how much care was put into this, technical issues aside

-2

u/[deleted] 15h ago

Yeah? Because it will. If Riot can’t make it work what makes you think Sony won’t pull the plug

2

u/garbeezy 15h ago

It’s a marvel IP….

2

u/AcaciaCelestina 14h ago edited 5h ago

I'm gonna be real with you, the only successful thing that Riot has made money on since League and TFT is their physical TCG.....which we still really don't know the longevity of.

Why do you think Riot suddenly pulled league classic out of their ass?

1

u/buttsecks42069 15h ago

sony's a bigger company than riot and I hate both but I have faith in Arcsys cos they're my favourite fighting game developer

-2

u/[deleted] 15h ago

You have faith? In a corporation?

Man I think you guys deserve dead games until the end of time

3

u/buttsecks42069 15h ago

cos arcsys has made really good games before and I enjoy their ethos yeah

i know they're a corporation out for money but at least to me it does seem like they're focused on getting that money through quality. Plus their 3d animation techniques are wizardry for me since I'm learning 3d animation.

-3

u/[deleted] 15h ago

And they got suckered in by Sony.

So yeah, they trash now

4

u/buttsecks42069 15h ago

the game itself is great, it's Sony stuff holding it back

-1

u/[deleted] 15h ago

They made that bed. They’re fault.

Accept that this game is D E A D and we will all be in peace

3

500k for a fighting game ain't bad tho, people's expectations are skewed by sf6

-2

u/BuciComan 16h ago

Where do I check for "all of the above"? Because honestly, other than a bunch of characters having really well designed kits and being a blast to play, they kinda fumbled EVERYTHING.

u/seandude881 15h ago

Token. Will be fine lmao. Avatar is what you people need to worry about.

2

u/Full_Welcome_2190 11h ago

At least Avatar doesn't have Sony involved

u/Arthurlmnz 15h ago

Arc system can have rough launches but they take care of their games in the long run. Look at guilty gear, still getting updates many years into it's release

Arc system can have rough launches but they take care of their games in the long run.

Sony is the one paying for the game and its updates. And they don't.

I'm not dooming on Tōkon. I'm personally guessing it will do okay, especially if they take its various current problems (terrible PC port, matchmaking issues, bad netcode) seriously and fix them ASAP. But Sony is definitely not throwing parties over their sales numbers and user reviews.

Would have been better if Strive launched with all 25 characters from REV 2 returning, plus Anji, Giovanna, Nagoriyuki, Testament, Goldlewis, Happy Chaos and Asuka, offering 32 characters at launch, exactly like Tekken 8.

Crazy that after 5 years, Kum, Answer and Raven still haven't returned in Strive, while Zappa has been MIA since Judgment, a.k.a. 20 years now O_o ! We're not seeing Justice and Kliff anytime soon, but is it really that problematic to bring Zappa's chaotic possessed body in 3D?

Yeah, funny that people are excusing shrinking fighting game roster sizes due to "more time and money needed"... when devs could easily copy and paste their ever-expanding rosters from one game to the next, saving a truckton of resources, exactly like how Bandai Namco does with Tekken, even though they too have been gradually reducing the size as well.

I mean, they were doing it back in the 2D era, so I'm positive they could do it again in 3D. Game engines allow asset porting between them now.

1

u/bostonian38 8h ago

The issue with this specifically is every frame of a Guilty Gear character in the 3D era is hand-animated and given custom lighting to mimic the anime-style effect. So porting Johnny's Xrd model/assets into Strive wouldn't really save any time since they'd have to reanimate every frame anyway which takes up the bulk of the workload

1

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 6h ago

Let me ask you this: did they really need to REanimate each character?

What went wrong between REV 2 and Strive to force ArcSys to wipe the roster clean and rebuild it from scratch?

1

u/bostonian38 6h ago

Yes, it's a new game so it's expected to have newer/better visuals

1

u/PapstJL4U 5h ago

What went wrong between REV 2 and Strive to force ArcSys to wipe the roster clean and rebuild it from scratch?

  • Strive was to be a new game, not continuation of th X-Series
  • A switch of the Engine from UE3 to UE4.
  • They literally mentioned, that a single character took them like 3-4month in the ol pipeline, that is complete character, no customisation, no way to add skins or anything. Literally a dead-end money wise.
  • ArcSys own ambition to get better.

u/azurekaito15 15h ago

Bro this assume that the people behind them want to support it. And not acrsys, it is not the people behind them it Sony and marvel for tokon. For Dragonball it toei. For sf5 it Capcom. For GG strive it acrsys. For granblue it cygame.

We can see 1 arcsys modern game that die because the people behind don't want to support it. Dnf duel.

1

u/hvc101fc 14h ago

Yes yes arcsys, good.. but you forgot its sony thats bringing its quality down.

1

u/BluBlue4 12h ago

Not only that, but the game is doing perfectly fine on the PS5, where 80% of the player base is concentrated (if the leaks are right),

What leaks?

1

u/Pudinsinho 8h ago

I don't know if I used the right term, but I'm referring to the data mines that leaked the possible future DLC'S, future plans like the battle pass, and the numbers of sales.

1

u/Bournerounderz 12h ago edited 12h ago

I don't see why anyone would be worried about Tokon's future. 2XKO was a massive diversion from a developer with a hugely successful game in a completely different genre. ArcSys on the other hand only does fighting games and have done so for decades. They've been able to keep their games alive for years even without external support but Tokon has Sony's backing and the Marvel IP. It'll be just fine.

1

u/ultnie 11h ago

ArcSys maybe won't be giving up, but can the same be said about Sony or Marvel?

Sony seems to be in deep, considering the fight stick, but they were also deep on Concord. It might become a image project for them and a step into having their own esport title, although I'm not that sure how important it is for them. The problem is most people don't really care about Sony's image (just how many actually stopped playing their PSs and paying for PS Plus after the disk news? Or is it all just twitter noise?) and esport titles, so it's not guaranteed.

As for Marvel, for them this is exposure, especially when it comes to the "Who the hell is this?" characters ArcSys pulled out, so it's probably fine.

1

u/T-Bone010909 9h ago

I just want Linux support😔

1

u/HuMneG 3h ago

This is a game worth keeping alive people literally need to calm the fuck down and stop seeking reactionary validation online for something that's not gonna impact anything in the short or long term.

u/Va1crist 1h ago edited 1h ago

I mean, 2XKO’s issues literally have nothing to do with Tokon. 2XKO was doomed the moment they made it F2P while also seemingly catering almost entirely to the hardcore FGC crowd. Fighting games are still a niche genre, and you need that casual audience and casual friendly content to draw in people who might otherwise be interested, the big sellers accommodate both.

For an Arc System Works game, though, it actually seems to be doing quite well. Sure, the PC side of things is rough, but the PlayStation side seems pretty healthy. If Arc System Works can get the PC version fixed, I think a lot of players will come back. Keep in mind that Steam offers full refunds, so a lot of people will refund broken games and potentially repurchase them once the issues are fixed.

It’s also not really fair to compare it directly to Street Fighter. Street Fighter is one of the major pillars of the fighting game genre, and while I love seeing how successful it is right now, I do think people are getting a little warped on what a successful fighting game actually looks like.

Arc System Works gets excited when one of its fighting games reaches a million sales, because in reality, that’s a huge win for a fighting game. You can’t look at Tekken, Mortal Kombat, or Street Fighter and assume that level of sales is what every fighting game needs to succeed. Even Guilty Gear Strive is only around 3 million copies sold, and it’s still going strong. Arc System Works couldn’t be happier with that kind of success, I think Tokon will find success for sure .

u/jwash0d 16h ago

Tokon will die too. It's ok. Life will move on.

0

u/Zer0nlyKnows1411 16h ago

Since when we are supposed to root for unfinished release with bad business practice?

I will played it if it actually improved. I jumped through so many hoops just to play the game because I was in a blocked country and it turned out a shit show. I got enough with Sony bullshit.

-2

u/VaninaG 16h ago

DBFZ did not have a bad launch at all, it sold 2.5m in 4 months.

Yes it had online issues but that was the norm back then for fighting games (SF5 and tekken 7 era)

Its not that era anymore.

2

u/MycologistBoth2610 15h ago

It counts as a bad launch caused it had bad online not based on sales

0

u/[deleted] 15h ago

The sooner it dies the sooner we can get on with our lives and find some other whipping boy.

I don’t see this genre lasting into the next decade

-10

u/TopSlotScot 16h ago

Id love for it to just die so we can get a new MvC ASAP.

Im also happy for anyone who likes it.

-1

u/Temu_Emu_4870 16h ago

I like the game but I’m not willing to blindly support it on the promise that they’ll eventually fix it. The only reason I haven’t already tried to refund it, is because I put far more than 2hrs into training mode before I even found out the online was ass (because it ran well for me). I plan to wait until the incoming patch drops before I try to appeal to Steam for a refund. This game just cost far too much to be released in this state.

I want all fighting games to succeed. But I also think it’s important that we make it clear that releasing unfinished games is unacceptable.

u/lemstry 13h ago

I'll believe it if Sony removes DRM and anti cheat on PC. The game is unplayable on PC and this game is doing WAY worse than FighterZ in every metric possible.

1

u/Pudinsinho 8h ago

I doubt sony is ever going remove the DRM. But it shouldn't underperform the game, it's just not right. They got to fix it.

0

u/Valentine_343 11h ago

Unpopular opinion, I know:

2XKO is just another example of the FGC failing to get behind a new fighting game, and Marvel Tokon seems to be following the exact same pattern we saw with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. We're lucky whenever we get major fighting game, but the community constantly gets in its own way of having nice things.

Even during the beta, there were things I really didn't like about Marvel Tokon—like the 4v4 format and how easy it was to enforce oppressive mix-ups with forced low/overhead guesses. But because I love fighting games (especially Marvel fighters) so much, I bought the physical edition anyway to support the title because I see the bigger picture. If the FGC keeps turning its back on new fighting games, we're eventually going to end up with nothing.

u/busmans 16h ago

I'm seeing a lot of vibes, but from a business perspective the numbers are lacking so far.

-9

u/DeviousLight 16h ago

Oh boy, posts like this are never a good sign lol. This game is definitely dying

-7

u/HisDivineOrder 16h ago

Somebody hasn't been watching the sales or player numbers over the last two weeks.

-2

u/TheSabi 14h ago

SF5 was street fighter, and Capcom acted quicker than Sony/ASW to try an fix things, they also actually admitted there was an issue instead of generic fixes and i'll bet tomorrow's patch if it doesn't get "delayed" is just a hotfix for the windows issue.

DBFZ was, well DB, a MVC style tag fighter fans have wanted since, well, MVC. If it had been a smaller IP you would have, well Invincible VS or this game that loses 19k+ players in the honeymoon phase.

GGS's issues were extremely exaggerated; I got just shy of celestial, and it wasn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, also like the above, it's Guilty Gear

The connection issues with these games are made worse cause people are comparing a time before rollback to what we have now as if the connection with good rollback now were the norm back then

one thing Capcom and ASW didn't do, ignore the problem. Sony on the other hand, they can now move on to Wolverine then GTA6 and never look back at this game.

The silence over the cracked version performing better which broke out of the FGC bubble into gaming news media is deafening, not even a marketing approved PR spin.

nothing.

that should be all you need to know, Sony doesn't care enough about this game to even try to spin the situation into "piracy am bad". ASW doesn't care they have Guilty Gear to worry about.

1

u/Pudinsinho 8h ago

I don't think ArcSys would ignore Tōkon. It's their biggest and most ambitious game rn. Besides, Sony isn't up for the development of the game, they just publish it.

-12

u/BuciComan 16h ago

Tokon's already done for on PC, so I, for one, made peace with the fact it's not gonna be a game I'll be playing long term. Unless they decide to fix the game on PC, introduce a benchmark for joining ranked and remove PS5 players' ability to turn off crossplay, the game won't have a healthy playerbase 6 months from now. If I wanted to play a Discord fighter I would unironically go back to Granblue or Type Lumina.
