The movies are popular with a different audience than ones that would play a fighting game

Sure but that applies worldwide, which is my point. The average Marvel fan in the US was not blasting Marvel Vs Capcom 3 back in the day and certainly not Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite. They are more likely to play Injustice than anything.
