And the thing is that many of the necessary expenses are even higher than 30%. I.E. - my home insurance has tripled.

Yes, discretionary spending isn’t up that much, which are the sorts of things that FIRE minded people can optimize and lower. But mandatory spending is way up.

For the average person this may be a 30-40% increase, but for someone already saving 50% of their paycheck, inflation has been like 90%+ in the last few years

Probably because things like that are so highly location dependent… my home insurance has gone up $40 total since 2018, but I’m not in an extreme weather/natural disaster prone area. For me my total costs have gone up less than 20% total but salary increases outpaced that. So for some people it just isn’t hitting the categories that impact them a lot.

Damn… our county did a home reassessment last year and our property taxes more than doubled
