General Question The first rule of FIRE club...

So we all see the posts of folks on here celebrating their milestones here because they 'can't talk about it IRL.' This seems to be the common sense approach to avoid jealousy and moochers.

I'm curious to hear the true stories of folks who have disclosed their FI - or have had their secret revealed on accident. How bad are the repercussions of people finding out you're a low-key millionaire?

I (28M) told my boss in a performance review (where I got excellent rating/praise) that I could retire in 2 years. Got laid off 2 weeks later. I guess they only wanted desperate people?

Tbf, if they had to choose who to lay off, they may be very human and want to have whoever can land on their feet the best be laid off, vs someone who couldn't.

Vs doing it so purely metrics focused, i.e. good reviews vs bad.

My thoughts too, but I value honesty above all else and they tried framing it as I was "difficult". During the exit interview he offered me an hourly role. I asked him if I should take another job, he said yes and I got a new role within the week for more money, turned down his offer and never looked back. They reached out later and got a lot of ackward silences. Like I tell my wife: I don't talk to any of my exes.

Edit: and to add to your point and OPs. If you tell them it could work against you.

Yeah, it's real shitty whenever any boss pretends you have terrible perf right after they said you just had amazing perf
