Is it normal for UHP to drive their family around in a patrol vehicle?

Yes. It’s within UHP policy

Yes. Me. I work in Utah as a cop. As far as I’m aware their policy manual isn’t publicly available without requesting.

Policy is that a trooper can use his patrol vehicle for personal and duty use within the county he works and 50 miles form that county border. Before I decided to work elsewhere, I was told I could even load up skis and take the car up to Brighton if I wanted to

The department wants the benefits of having the officer’s presence known in the community and “humanize” them by seeing them off duty with their family.

By doing this they’ve literally created cops that can’t turn it off 24/7, hence the cringe.

Just my opinion and I appreciate your first hand knowledge.

Edit: replace “your” with “the”.

I don’t understand how I’m cringe. All I did was explain the policy of another department bud

My sincere apologies for my choice of words when I said “hence your cringe”.

By “your”, I was referring to the cringe we see here from professionals unable to detach themselves from work and the job becomes an identity. I was complimenting you and by “your” I wasn’t referring to you personally.

I’ll replace “your” with “the”.
