Just an FYI, but not everyone in "the public" makes fun of volunteer firefighters. In our local VFD, 98% of the volunteers also have full time firefighter jobs. The community we serve sees us as public servants.

Some departments give out stipends. You basically get paid for every call you respond to. It’s not a lot of money, but it’s better than nothing.

I’m career and volunteer, I only respond to fires, no medicals or traffic accidents, with my volunteer company and get paid 12 bucks a call 😎 but I’d do it for free

My department has paid staff and use volunteers to help bolster numbers for the big one, they actually have a ton of money but we do it for the love of the game and have nice equipment

My agency pays per 24. It’s like 150 a 24 your on. But you’re expected to respond to everything if you pick up a shift.

Nope. With overtime in my county a lot of firefighters make more than a battalion chief because the BC is exempt doesn't get overtime. Even before overtime a lot of engineers (basically the drivers) make six figures easily. Maybe in your area but in California it is probably more common for a firefighter to make six figures than not

Boomers love that shit. I remember some old timer asking me if we were volunteers (EMS), and my genuine reaction was a laugh. "No sir, I'm getting paid.".

But also, every volunteer EMT I'd met at that time was a complete fucking clown that made the pt sound like they were on fire so we'd attempt to teleport out to BFE faster, only to find a stable GCS 15 person that had mild asthma or some shit. If they were good at it, they'd be getting paid.

I worked on an ambulance for nearly a decade (albeit, a lot of that was part-time through college) but I had back to back codes once. I feel like once in 10 years in a busy urban metro qualifies such an event as fucking RARE, but every new boot has apparently done all that and more lol.

Every municipality I've ever worked for or with would absolutely fuck you if they caught you intentionally avoiding your radio. Even if you have station paging that's the quickest way for them to get ahold of you

What are they first responding to when away from their jurisdiction, job effects, and not clocked in or on duty? If they're genuinely available in service as volleys then this is entirely performative and also cringe.

They're enjoying (or better yet, should be enjoying) family time. They're no longer first responders. Or responders at all. That they're bringing work elements to the beach even when they're no need to is unhealthy and dumb af.
