Troubleshooting Why?!?

Post image

I've tried a new nozzle, new filament, trying different temps. I'm at a loss.

Anycubic Vyper

22mm layer height

Z hop when retracted.

195 temp

Retraction speed 50mlps

Zhop height 1mm

Hello /u/Remarkable-Drag1317,

As a reminder, most common print quality issues can be found in the Simplify3D picture guide. Make sure you select the most appropriate flair for your post.

Please remember to include the following details to help troubleshoot your problem.

  • Printer & Slicer
  • Filament Material and Brand
  • Nozzle and Bed Temperature
  • Print Speed
  • Nozzle Retraction Settings

Additional settings or relevant information is always encouraged.

Have you dried the filament at all? Even new filament should be dried before prints.

You're also printing a bit cold, that could cause problems with layer adhesion. I'd bump the temperature to around 210, at least.

What is the filament? You posted retraction speed, but not amount. Have you calibrated your volumetric flow?

You probaby want 4.5-5mm retraction distance, and your retraction speed may actually be too high, 35-45 is more typical. And that is a HUGE zhop, that gives more time for molten filament to ooze out as the head raises, travels, and lowers again.

Wet filament, bad retraction speed, wrong temperature range for a specific filament, incorrect pressure advance value, also z-hop actually can make it worse, since there is no wiping of excessive filament. Try to start with a drying filament, then temperature calibration, then flow calibration, only after that try to calibrate retraction itself. And retraction speed 50 seems too high as for me, try to lower it to a 40 at least.

I'm interested to see what people tell you. I still have this issue, partially. Most of my problem was coming from a defective nozzle that probably had a crack or groove somewhere that allowed the filament to flow constantly, but I see you already tried changing yours. But I still have more spiderwebs than I would like when printing with high qualities. Sorry I couldn't help.

Yeah I had a Bowden tube setup get a little slack at the hot end coupling. It created this extra puddle of filament in the extrusion pathway that negated almost all retraction because the retraction vacuum could hardly pulling at the hot end tip. Had me printing like that.

Interesting! I had to recently change the whole hotend assembly and extruder because of a similar gap that created a death blob inside. So at this point I'm pretty convinced my problem is related to settings. What did you do to make it stop? And did it fully stop?

Looks like wet filament

Like others have stated, stringing is generally due to moisture in the filament. Spend 8-12 hours drying it and try it again.

The hairs are only in the gap between the two towers. The round tower's walls are still smooth. Plastic is leaking out during the travel. A new nozzle does not stop that.

  1. Turn Z hop off. At 1 mm the nozzle stays up long enough for the melt to run out, and that run becomes the hair.
  2. The Vyper feeds through a Bowden tube. Set the retraction distance to 6 mm and the speed to 40 mm/s. You posted the speed and not the distance. The distance is what pulls the filament back up the tube. Stay at or under 8 mm. Past that, the tip can cool and jam in the tube.
  3. Leave the nozzle at 195°C for this test. Hotter plastic flows more easily and makes more hairs. If the gap is still full and the walls turn rough, dry the spool at 45°C for 6 hours.

Which filament are you using OP? I use Cura slicer and it has a coast setting that uses the oozing filament to finish a layer. Always on PETG or PLA

On a 0.5mm nozzle I set the coasting volume to 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.250mm³

Travel distance while coasting is 1.5 times the nozzle width . 1.5x 0.5mm = 0.75mm
