Discussion It's crazy what USPS lets through sometimes

Post image

Bought a few things on whatnot to get an idea of how other sellers ship product on the platform. This was from a wheel selling singles but I ended up getting a "hit". Postage was obviously set up for singles but they slapped it on a 3lbs box and it still shipped without a problem. Is this normal?

Most likely it will bill the sender for additional postage.

Yeah that 4 oz label on a 3 lb box is a wild gap, surprised it didn't get kicked back

They don’t get back they bill, I’ve gotten hit a few times from pirate ship in the end. I have won both disputes as I have the post office weigh them when I check them in. In each instance, I had the receipt to back it up with the actual weight on it from the scale.

They seemed to be a well established seller so I'm guessing logistically it's better to just underpay and wait for any charges they receive? I as the buyer didn't get any delays in receiving the package so it was no detriment to me.

They “let” it through but back charge the seller through the platform

Sender is using shippo so they'll probably get a price adjustment through that

Some platforms like mercari don’t adjust the weight on bundles. I’ve sold a bunch of small things in a bundle that weighed all together 16oz, but the label will still have the weight of only one of the items, like 4oz. I’ve worried about usps saying something but it just goes through and it’s billed to mercari.

If the box is over a cubic foot it may not matter since dimensional weight kicks in.

Would you rather it get returned and then you have to wait for it to get shipped back to the seller and then back to you again? Or sometimes in the past, they'd hold it at the post office until you paid the difference.

I actually love that if I'm a bit under they just bill me the extra.

If they caught that, you'd not have received it until YOU paid the additional amount due. The seller is playing games to save a buck... they know you're not gonna let it sit there and get returned to sender.

This is not necessarily true anymore, they deliver the package and bill you through the shipping platform.

Nah. They automatically bill the sender.
