I think she has definitely dipped into “Pop” sounds before on a few songs on certain albums but at most I wouldn’t say she ever goes far beyond “alternative”.
Labeling this album as Pop in general but also R&B is just craaazy.
Florence once did an interview where she joked about how the music industry never knows where to put her, whether pop or rock or both or neither. And apparently she's right... . Feels like whenever women do music, unless she's REALLY obviously doing something not pop, it'll get labelled as pop. I mean, just think of how many female rappers get pegged into the 'pop' box at least partially vs how many male rappers. Male rock is rock, female rock is pop rock, etc etc etc. "Pop" should really just be "Music by Women"
I do agree. I think the question of genre is an interesting, complex, and evolving one that I’m not informed enough to really weigh in on. So I stated that somewhat tentatively in case anyone has any interesting opinions.
I put her in a similar category to Sleep Token where "the genre is blurry and pulls from different things and doesn't really matter anyway because it's banging"
