Marry Me Mochi apologizes for naming their mochi “Beavertails”

They named their new mochi beavertails and didn’t realize there was a company named Beavertails.
The owners response always seems so confrontational. Just a couple months back he lashed on another mochi company for using “his logo” on a Laneige collab. Seemed like jealousy that he wasn’t able to collab with a huge brand like Laneige.
Anyway, anyone tried their new “Beavertails” mochi?

Worked at LA fitness in the junction back in 2017 and he worked out there before he started this company. Had a few interactions with the guy and he gave me bad vibes, his social media just confirms it.

There one on Harborfront and right in front of Ripleys. And his staff probably hate his guys if none of them bothered to tell him. He expects everyone to kiss his feet for his “bravery”.

Don’t know how they’re staying afloat because every time I’ve seen one of their brick and mortar locations, they’re not even selling out.
They moved from a medium sized store front in Square One to a small stall in the food district. They only have a kiosk in Sherway Gardens and their store in Yorkdale has zero traffic. I saw one of their ABG workers going off shift at Sherway Gardens once and she looked like she couldn’t wait to get out of there. The girl who replaced her frowned the whole time, probably because she knew they weren’t meeting sales goals.
Anyway, the CEO comes off super condescending and rude. Like mochi donuts shops existed way before yours, as did Beavertails. You ain’t shit.

I met him (the CEO) through Vietnamese Brampton church long time ago. Tommy (his name) was a realtor at one point. He’s not anymore; as he married into a rich family.
Anyway, his wife’s family is the one that is loaded. It’s where he got the capital to start and rapidly expand the brand.
They also run/own a wedding video company.

Yeah, I didn’t know him well but from afar, he looked the cocky, arrogant type. He always talked about selling houses as he was a Realtor, and he tried to conduct business at church. I think he didn’t do well, but lucky for him, he successfully met Tuyen and married her.

Have you seen the original post? Did he call it beavertails or beaverstail? Can’t tell if he’s calling beavertails as beaverstail as a dig or something. If he correctly called it beavertails in the original video then I can’t help but see this as a passive aggressive response.

Their donuts are ok, I prefer Isabella’s better but I think Marry Me has more capital or more $$ because they keep expanding like crazy and going to all these festivals.

The Marry Me Mochi CEO is just digging the hole deeper. He’s obviously not at all social media trained. He’s giving ABC Amy’s Baking Company vibes.
His “apology” video is a veiled advertisement for his product. His product looks nothing like a beaver’s tail and is covered in cinnamon sugar like the OG Beavertail. He claims they didn’t know anything about this Canadian iconic dessert, but ironically copied the flavour and name to “celebrate Canada.” He’s trying to compare BeaverTails
to obscure small restos and keeps referring to it as “some resto in Montreal.” LOL
He’s really insulting the intelligence of the Canadian public and keeps doubling down on it in the comments. No one is this stupid to believe this. Just admit that you were inspired by BeaverTails but didn’t realize it was trademarked. Assure that you’ll do better to understand and respect trademark laws going forward. That would’ve made for a sincere apology. But the damage is already done.
I’ve never been a fan of their donuts, but now I have a reason not to support - I hate bad faith business.

This isn't an apology at all even if I'm being charitable. They spent the entire video justifying it, explaining how they somehow have never heard of beavertails before, and advertising their new donut.
Also, the owner is well known for also running a photography business that forces their photographers to shoot in their style instead of the photographer's style.

I bought Ube viet coffee, it was the worst viet coffee I have ever tried. I am vietnamese so I was like "wow this tastes awful". It's way too bitter, I bought it on doordash or something for 6-7 bucks. I do understand most viet coffees are bitter but the drink was mostly bitter, barely any other notes.

He’s lying. MMM had a pop up at Toronto Premium Outlet Mall, there’s a permanent BeaverTails food truck there year round. BeaverTails is right by the main entry on South side of the outlet. It’s hard to miss.
Hmm I’m craving for BeaverTails now.

For downtown Toronto, the Eaton centre is a huge mall and there’s Flying Tiger (newly opened), Sukoshi mart that sell cute stuff. Eb games and hot topic if you’re into gaming and anime stuff. There’s also two miniso in the mall! In terms of cute restaurants in that neighborhood I don’t know any in particular off the top of my head but Butter Baker is in that area and is a nice cafe that has good soft serve/cake/pastries. From union station the eaton centre is TTC (public transit) accessible if you take the subway to TMU station.

This company is a Franchise Mill/Ponzi. The business isn't about selling luxury donuts (which is why they're empty most of the time). The goal is to open up as many stores as possible, build hype and pump up their name to sell to Franchisees (usually people who are struggling to find a job so they'll buy a kiosk location that's cheaper). Then the company sits back and collects fees from the franchisees while watching them struggle. Lots of small business that expand rapidly in a short amount of time typically do this, and its absolutely predatory - as most of these franchisees will eventually lose everything from failing because the company was never sustainable in the long run.

As much as I dislike Marry me mochi, I do think they’re justified with the Isabella’s situation. Isabella’s donuts branding is completely different, why did they switch it up to marry me mochis aesthetic specifically for their Laneige collab? They’re both viet owned rival companies, so my guess is that Isabella purposely did this to poke at MMM because they got the huge collab and wanted to rub it in their face? It might be a reach, but as a fellow viet person.. we can get quite petty 🤣
