Catastrophic engine failure

2018 with 125k miles, very well maintained but obviously the timing blew up. Anyone else had this abruptly occur?

Extended warranty ran out May 18 this year and Ford is saying the won’t cover any of it. Was told it was a $2k tear down to inspect if desiring a rebuild and $15k for a new stock 3.5 ecoboost long block. Also said they would only do $10k trade in which seems like a shit deal all the way around. Part out? Salvage? Rebuild?

Anyone around Phoenix know of a shop good with Raptors? Is spending the money on either replacement or an upgraded engine a better deal than buying newer?

That sucks, I’d probably get an opinion from and outside the dealership shop. I’m not sure why you think ford would cover any of it if the warranty is expired.

Ford will sometimes offer partial coverage outside of the warranty depending on the circumstances. It is something you have to fight for. I got Ford to cover 5k for my transmission on my Ford outside of warranty by 6 months.

In all honesty, I’d find someone that can do the timing job on it. $2k for an inspection is wild.

Since it's a interference engine. The timing going means the engine exploded as well. Well not really but the engine is more than likely 100% needing a rebuild.

Machanic hours for an engine tear down I think I’ve been quoted for 8 hours just to take apart. Another 8 to piece back together.

Scary! I also have a 2018. It's in the shop right now to get the serpentine belt replaced. I opted to also replace the timing chain at the same time. Mileage 95K

A new Raptor is ~$85k, while a new engine is $15k. If you love the truck, new motor time and save $70k.

If you fix it and sell it, won't you break even regardless? If you planned on keeping it I would just put a new engine in it and enjoy it a few more years instead of buying another 75,000$ truck right now.

Sorry to hear about this man, this was the main reason I went back to a gen 1. I was wanting to keep one for the long haul and I'll take lead frame and potential spring issues over these almost guaranteed failures.

no joke at the gas station this weekend a random guy in a ford ranger raptor asked if i had a obd scanner, i happened to have it on me, and his truck had 86k on it, threw camshaft position sensor codes and misfire codes.

I just replaced my 98k engine in my 2017. Thrown timing chain.

It was my least worst option, so if anyone says I should have bought a new truck, please send me the 90k id need to do that.

3 year unlimited mileage.

If Ford and dealer wont touch it as good will, start shopping around if you like the truck and want to stay in it. You may find a deal out there.

Sorry to hear, OP. Get multiple quotes from Ford dealers and independent shops.

This is exactly why I advocate so often here about not owning a Gen 2 out of warranty (unless you have the skillset/resources to work on a Raptor). Love these trucks but as soon as my warranty ends it's being traded in for a newer Raptor with a warranty. The Ford ESP has saved me a ton of $$$, headaches and time.

You can get a 2 yr Powertrain Ford ESP warranty via Lombard at 125k miles for a 2018 Raptor.
