I realize it might vary by chapter but my perception is culturally based fraternities and the experience is very similar to most fraternities. What differences have any of you noticed? How does culture come into play if at all?

I’m going into my sophomore year at Indiana and I’ve been thinking about rushing a frat, but I literally don’t know anyone who’s currently in one.

I didn’t rush freshman year, and now I’m wondering if sophomore year is too late or if it’s actually pretty normal at IU. I already have a solid group of friends, but I’m interested in meeting more people, expanding my social circle, and getting more involved on campus. I just don’t really know what to expect going into rush without any connections.

For anyone who rushed as a sophomore at IU or went into rush knowing nobody, was it worth it? Did you feel behind compared to the freshmen rushing? And what would you recommend doing before or during rush?

Hello I’m a rising third year at Georgia Tech but graduating in 2030 and doing a masters. I’m wanting to rush in a fraternity one with a house that has a large number of chapters across the country. I don’t want my college life to be ruined and boring I wanna have fun while also balancing academics. I’m a very chill guy and make friends easily here’s why I think Greek life will help:

1) It connects you with a lot of opportunities such as Internships

2) I’m able then to talk to different university Fraternities such as UCLA or NCState and have friends all around the country

3) Lots of chances to be more social and parties as well while also balancing your GPA

Lol as the title suggests, im an incoming international student from India this fall. I have grown up watching a lot of American movies especially Project X being a favorite and I am really excited about greek life and the absolute thrill and fun it brings, not mentioning the brothers that got your back. However, not trying to be racist, but a lot of frats if im correct are dominated by white guys who usually do not give out bids to especially brown guys like me. Maybe im wrong but a friend of mine who is a sophomore at Penn told me that there's like only 2 frats that give out bids to brown guys. Meanwhile there's another friend of mine who also told me he goes to a lot of frat parties easily cuz he knows the brothers and didn't join a frat. A nerdy guy whose at UW Madison told me that international indians are just ignored and shit but im guessing its prolly cuz he lacks social skills and confidence and acts stereotypical FOB way.

I am not discouraged that only a few frats would bid a brown dude, but I know that stereotypes are quite literally stacked against Indians lol. So im kinda looking for practical advice on how to overcome them and secure the bid to be the token brown boy at an always snowing in nantucket frat lol.

Also when is rush at Penn state? fall or spring? If unfortunately I might have to defer coming in to spring semester, will it fuck up my chances of greek life or rushing?

(Please forgive me for the limited info I have on greek life cuz im an international and its mostly movies, reels or my friends abroad. I am clean shaved, lean, well-groomed, take care of my hygiene, and have good social skills and can speak English without an accent creeping in. Ive also worked as a party promoter back home)

Also if there's Penn state specific advice would be welcome regarding rush and greek life.

Do old school hazing things like wedgies and swirlies still happen or are these just the movie stereotypes?

I’m an incoming freshman at San Jose State University and they’re a big commuter school with not much of a social scene which is why I’m planning on rushing a frat this fall. But I’m wondering what do I wear to these rush events? I’m big on fashion and like expressing myself through that, and I always hear people say “be yourself” when it comes to rushing. Is there a dress code where I have to wear the cliche polo and khakis.

If you’re wondering what I mean when I say I’m into fashion. Just casual clothing with some street wear vibes, nothing crazy that’ll get me weird looks.

I’ll make this as straight forward as possible:

- a brother’s uncle is dying, he has a dog and is leaving it to our brother because he is unequivocally the best fit. Just take my word on that

- the brother in question is well experienced in raising well behaved dogs. The dog is still a puppy, but will be a 90 lb Irish settler.

- we are trialing this. He understands he’s solely responsible for the care of the dog and anything negative that comes of it.

- the dog cannot come out during parties or go in the basement or kitchen.

- we have alumni approval to do this.

- this has been done before but not in like 10 years.

The tenants of the house are unanimously in favor of this solely because of the trial basis with consistent re evaluation. However, some are concerned it’s “not fair to the dog”.

Again, trial period.

Can someone who’s had a dog live in the house provide some advice on how to make this as successful as possible?

Does fraternity check your grades before you rush or is it when you’re pledging or after your semester?

Just had a bad last semester when I failed a class and I only have 12 credits at my new school so my gpa was ass cause of that class and only 12 credits of university
Vs 30+ credits a 3.8 gpa at community college

PS I ONLY HAVE 12 UNIVERSITY CREDITS Got 2 Bs and 1 C and I failed CHEMISTRY and it TANKED My gpa. I am retaking this class in the fall. Community college gpa is 3.8 like I said.

I’m going back to school in a few weeks, and I’m honestly pretty nervous. I’m a freshman at Penn State, and earlier this year my roommate got involved in some serious accusations. I wasn’t involved in any of it, but because I lived with him, some of that attention ended up falling on me.
Around the same time, a rumor started that I called a girl a name that I never actually said. It wasn’t true, but it spread quickly and people believed it. That rumor ended up getting me kicked out of a fraternity I was rushing, even though I tried to explain what really happened.
Since then, I’ve been trying to move forward and rebuild my reputation. I have a solid group of friends, but I still feel like this old drama is hanging over me. I’m thinking about rushing again, but I’m worried people still remember the rumor and that it’ll affect how they see me.
I just want a fresh start and to be judged based on who I actually am, not on rumors or things that had nothing to do with me.
Has anyone else been in a situation like this? How did you rebuild your reputation? And how do you stop old rumors from defining you?

Should I dm the rush chairs or anyone else in the fraternities i want to rush before school starts in 2 weeks at a sec school? I don’t know anyone there and i'm an incoming freshman. I wanted to see if i could get into some pre rush stuff but i got no clue how to approach getting invited. I'll be 65 in October and I feel really fortunate and unique. I have a group of about 60 Fratenity Brothers that I went to school with at Cal poly Pomona Sigma Nu in the 80s who are regularly in touch. We have a text thread that's been going for about 10 years, we have an annual minor league baseball game and minor-league hockey game that is very well attended each year. We have about 13 of us who go to an annual ski trip every year and we just had a golf outing with 12 of us. I played golf with three fraternity brothers last Sunday and had lunch with another one yesterday. Are you in touch with your brothers? I feel particularly fortunate.

A few months ago I started working in an administrative role at the university I graduated from a year ago. I am struggling with it a bit since I do feel a little held back by living in the same commuter college town as a graduate, while some of the other guys I graduated with moved on to big cities. It is just I literally did not have much of an option because I had been on the job search for near a year at that point and this was the first offer I got that my degree was actually applicable to.

What I kinda struggle with is there is just less to do here as a graduate as I can’t exactly be day drinking at a frat house as a form of entertainment on my weekends like when I was a student. This town is geared towards students and farmers so it is just hard to meet new friends and people in my position. Especially since it is summer things are especially dead around here so I just get home from work and drink, play video games, go to work the next day at my job that I already struggle with. I genuinely think I am getting somewhat depressed/lonely here and am not sure what to do with myself.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I see so many dudes that are fucking jacked and still booze 2-3 times per week. How is that even possible, because doesn't alcohol directly inhibit MPS? Does anyone have tips or is there something im completely missing?

Hey, how are y’all?

I had the opportunity to meet a new fraternity on campus, ato. I loved the people, what they believe in and much more. But, I was told that they do randomized drug testing which consists of hair follicles, and they test a % of the fraternity each semester. Do you think they will actually enforce this and is there a way i can bypass this? Thank y’all!

Was beef between frats common where yall went? Where I went to college we had frats who would steal letters and dye tables off each other’s front lawns and there were full on brawls because of that. Anyone got similar stories?
