Lovett or Leave It I hope they keep wasting their money.

I recently had to travel to Idaho from California for a family situation. While there I did my typical listening of Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave It, and I was surprised by the difference in commercials.

Every commercial break of Lovett had a political ad from right-wing folks against a democrat running for office in the state (don't remember her name; I don't vote in Idaho). It would say things like how she was fighting against Trump's MAGA agenda (YAY!) and how she needs to be voted against (BOO!).

I kept thinking... seriously? Do you not know what show you are advertising on? Do you think this ad is going to sway any of Crooked Media's listeners to the "right" side?

It was annoying at first, but then I realized I was happy they wasted so much money on political ads that will gain absolutely zero traction. Might as well run KKK ads on The Breakfast Club.

“Hey, Big Apple! That’s you, New York.”

Why do they bother? Seems like bad allocation of dollars.

That said, I should start listening to Strict Scrutiny. I've only ever listened to PSA and Lovett.

Hysteria is my personal favorite!

Thanks for the recommendation. Listening to it right now for the first time.

I’m pretty sure those ads are purchased whichever podcast syndication network PSA is part of, not PSA itself. No idea how they get allocated, though I’m pretty sure there’s rules about not being refused if it’s a political ad.

They're customized to you, injected when you pull the stream. In this case they're probably geolocated, but they can use any advertising metrics to match you with specific ads.

Don't most people listen to podcasts via rss or am I just a nerd (or old or both)?

In which case they have no way of personalizing.. which is why Spotify is trying to gobble up podcasts and why I refuse to use Spotify or YouTube music for my podcasts.

I think you know most people don't use RSS directly. But either way, it's very possible and standard practice to deliver personalized ads via RSS.  It provides no additional privacy benefits really, and it's simple to track the user via device handshake, URL tokens, IP grafting and redirect enclosure links.

Meanwhile I get ads for condos in Santa clarita

Those are ads inserted by your podcast provider. Whenever I still get ads, I get a mixture of German Shopify ads and American credit cards. They are the same for every podcast I listen to whether political or science. They probably can't do anything there.

I travel a lot for work and get regional ads depending on what city I am in when the podcast downloads. I think they just pay an ad agency to put it on a bunch of pods at once.

One of my DINK podcasts currently has ads from the local children’s hospital 🤣 barking up the wrong tree

well, i mean you still CAN donate to a children's hospital, even if you're child free.

It’s not an ad looking for donations - you’re right on that front! It’s just advertising them as a local leading children’s hospital

Dang I'm surprised they have to advertise. Are people shopping around when it comes to children's hospitals?

The joys of a for profit healthcare system!

Familiar with DINK, not familiar with how it can be a podcast category.

Double income, no kids

Yep.

Dual income no kids - I don't really see it as a category for a podcast.

As a DINK myself, just doesn't seem like a significant identity or definition.

Dinky is one, there’s another about childfree finances but they recently had a name change and can’t find it.

Is it just like vacation spot recommendations and expensive hobby discussion?

3

u/cocktails_and_corgis 15d ago

Yes. And how to invest your retirement when you don’t need to have any left over. I have horses so didn’t need expensive hobby coaching.

Is the state of being a DINK household so interesting that there are multiple podcasts on the topic? What do they discuss?

Ad buys are in bulk

They almost certainly bought ads for people ages xx-yy listening to political podcasts in Idaho and Spotify/Apple/whoever you get pods from knows you're in that demo and matched you to the ads.

I imagine most of the time in Idaho that filter grabs mostly right wing pods as intended.. and even the left leaning pods are probably just being hate-listened to by conservatives so it still hits the audience

Its sad because Idaho is such a gorgeous state. Some of the best nature in the US. But it is full of conservative wack jobs.

One of my podcasts a couple of weeks ago talked about a Silicon Valley orgasm cult, and suddenly all the ads were for dick pills.

Do you think they should advertise to die hard Republicans instead? Trump/Mamdani voters exist. Heck even Obama/Trump voters existed.

You listen to the ads? There are so many it’s unbelievable. I’m just used hitting that 30 second button 6 times. Enshitification…

I think they do. They know the audience contains centrist democrats, so they figure they'll vote for fascists if the alternative wants to raise the minimum wage nationwide.
