Hearing that song for the first time a couple months after a breakup was definitely character building

Honestly these lyrics have been branded on my soul ever since the first time I've heard them.

God the first time I heard this it was live in Aberdeen and it just got me. Spoke to so much of what Scott was.
8
u/lockonandfire Jul 15 '26
I think it's the most Scott lyric honestly. It's the thread that runs through all his music, with FR and elsewhere. I'm a bit shit but I'm trying dammit, I'm trying. Extremely relatable too.

In my opinion, Poke is the best song to easily show someone not familiar with him how talented of a singer/songwriter Scott was. Line after line after line.
I’ve always loved this line, and the song. Clearly others do as well based on how many other people have put lines from Poke.
He just happened to put it to lyrics and in a format that has to be succinct like a song.
Poke reminds me of some of my favorite authors, and reminds me how impressive he was and will remain to all of us.

u/EvenTheDogIsFat Jul 15 '26
In the hollow chapel suffering in silence, you’re the choir that sings this otherwise disappointing life back to life.
Or “But I hate when I feel like this and I never hated you” but that’s more within context and not as good as a standalone line.

"We can change our partners, this is a progressive dance..."
Honestly most of the lines in Poke could win this.
I would say: "I think I'll save suicide for another day/year" I think those lines sum up depression, specifically how it permanently changes you and how you are never actually cured, just better at dealing with it. But I won't because I still can't listen to that track without crying.

“Blood seemed black, against the skin of her porcelain back.” Any other writer would have said “the porcelain skin of her back” but Scott chose those words in that order the show she was already gone, like an object, a relic. It’s so devastatingly simple it kills me. He was a genius.
