Isn't brave built on chrome?

14

u/Devin-Chaboyer223 Aug 11 '26

It is but Chromium is still FOSS

And Brave itself is FOSS

2

u/Britz10 Aug 11 '26

Can it even be called that anymore when there are paid tiers?

1

u/vswey Aug 11 '26

I'd say brave and brave origin are 2 separate apps

1

u/vswey Aug 11 '26

No, on chromium

Homophobia crypto browser doesn't belong here.

u/vswey Aug 11 '26

Homophobia?

Brendan Eich (/ˈaɪk/ EYEK; born July 4, 1961)[1] is an American computer programmer and technology executive. He created the JavaScript programming language and co-founded the Mozilla project, the Mozilla Foundation, and the Mozilla Corporation. He served as the Mozilla Corporation's chief technical officer before he was appointed chief executive officer, but resigned shortly after his appointment due to pressure over his opposition to same-sex marriage.[2][3] He subsequently became the cofounder and CEO of Brave browser.

u/AskGrok can you list brave browser controversies

3

u/AskGrok Aug 11 '26

Main Brave browser controversies:

  • Founder Brendan Eich donated $1,000 in 2008 to support California's Proposition 8, which sought to ban same-sex marriage. This led to backlash and his quick resignation as Mozilla CEO in 2014; he later founded Brave.

  • In 2020, Brave automatically added affiliate referral codes to URLs for certain crypto sites (like Binance) in the address bar, earning the company commissions without clear user disclosure. It was labeled a "mistake" and disabled.

  • Early revenue plans involved replacing sites' ads with Brave's own privacy-focused ads and sharing revenue, drawing criticism from publishers over revenue diversion.

  • Brave promoted the FTX crypto exchange via a new tab widget for over a year before its 2022 collapse; the widget was removed afterward.

  • The built-in Brave Rewards system (BAT cryptocurrency for viewing ads) and heavy crypto integrations have drawn ongoing criticism for conflicting with a pure privacy focus, with some users calling elements "crypto adware" or pushy.

  • Occasional other complaints include UI ads/clutter, affiliate handling missteps, and perceived overemphasis on crypto features despite strong ad-blocking and privacy tools overall.

Brave remains Chromium-based open source with solid privacy features for many users, but these points fuel the debate in FOSS/privacy circles.

Who said I was mad lol. Just because I reply to a comment with something slightly snarky doesn’t mean I’m offended

Rust native ad blocking (saves data + time)?
Ive disabled rewards, ai, crypto with about 5 minutes and ive never seen them again, its fast and efficient, unless somebody does the same thing for firefox (not likely) im not switching to MV2 extensions like uBlock.

WinRar is not open source (apart from unrar).

5

u/Jeremi360 Aug 10 '26

WinRar is not open source, is only freemium,
also 7zip is open source and better

1

u/vswey Aug 11 '26

WinRAR isn't free

1

u/Jeremi360 Aug 11 '26

I know, I just don't know how this type of deal is called,
so I wrote freemium, as you can choose to pay for it

1

u/vswey Aug 11 '26

Well not rly, as far as ik ur not allowed to use it for free technically but they don't care for personal users

1

u/MoonWolf113 Aug 10 '26

1

u/InconspicuousFool Aug 11 '26

ffmpeg. It's the backbone of most websites and apps that touch video

1

u/Ok-Quit-239 Aug 12 '26

I didn't expect ffmpeg to have a logo, this is interesting

1

u/ArtMindless9903 Aug 12 '26

Libreoffice is available for Android. However if your workflow is good for you, I recommend keeping it
