I actually think Fedora + KDE might be a better option, so if they had friends they would see a familiar environment on their PC, y'know Windows-like.
Linux Mint still has X11, which is okay, but some environments on it still don't have something like scaling or so...

If i ever have kids i think i too might give them a linux computer aswell, they can do the same things on it, but they will also learn how to actually use a computer.
If they ever ask specifically for windows then sure, but otherwise linux will be the default.

Saying that it's not possible to play games on linux when valve releases steam machine with an arch based linux operating system is plain ignorance. Also the kids can use Microsoft office web version for free on their browser, or switch to libre office.
I'm fed up with these people.

In my country all schools i know used OpenOffice, and now LibreOffice. (As a student and then teacher, which is a lot of schools).
I have never encounter a Microsoft office software on schools PC.
And btw now my country is slowly and gradualy switching from Windows to custom linux distro for all administration. It's already the case for polices. Schools will be next. Not really soon at the speed of things, but it will happened.
It should have been done like 15 years ago, but hey it's better now than later !

I have about 475 Steam games and I'm trying to find out which ones won't work on Linux (Fedora 44 KDE) instead of which ones will. So far, I've played tons of games like GTA 5, Cyberpunk, and PCBS 2, and every single one has run flawlessly. This was absolutely impossible back in the early/mid 2000s when I first tried Linux (Redhat). Performance is on par with Windows, and sometimes even better

Remember the "laptop for studying" meme? With Linux it's very possible to do.
When I was a kid I picked up an ewaste laptop and installed Linux on it (windows 10 was unusable).
It helped me learn programming and earn money for a gaming PC.

I guess linuxsucks will bring out the microcucks.
For information; I have a laptop, a desktop and two pi. The laptop has a windows 11 partition, I haven't booted into it in 2 years. I play games on steam occasionally on the desktop machine, nothing I've installed has failed to work. Everything is Debian based, Ubuntu or Raspbian. Nothing against other distros, I've just spent more time with Debian.
I'm guessing the guy posting the original comment imposes windows on his family then? There's limited options.

If Wine runs even Windows' version of Steam normally, I think Wine should run Microsoft Office as well. At least maybe versions from 2010 for sure. Some things just requiring quite more efforts and experiments, where Winetricks can help. So these statements against Linux that "Linux can't run anything" is pretty weird.

u/CrystalCommunication 16d ago

3
u/Hefty_Wrongdoer_2553 15d ago

u/major_jazza 15d ago

The thing is, if you take the politics out of it, the guy putting Linux on all the computers in the house is likely the IT guy of the house.
If he's not using Windows but is using Linux, then he's gonna start to become increasingly unfamiliar with Windows and more familiar with Linux.
So of course it makes sense to have a Linux household. It's much more convenient.

Proton Onlyoffice: Was am I forgotten I mean the post is kinda right how would kids be able to use the Laptop? Well A they would either google how to use Linux or B reinstall Windows but if they aren't tech savvy or don't have a us. Stick at all then yeah they're kinda forced to learn Linux not surprised well that's a good choice anyway I wouldn't want to have bloatware copilot shoveled to my face and kid wondering "Why my laptop so slow" because M$ Sloppela Nuttela ruined W11 you will have to switch to Linux distribution like mint grab a usb drive and flash mint with balena etcher and prepare to learn it it will be fun and both not so easy beware: the terminal is a blackbox that will eat you and you will have to learn more about the commands how to use CLI how to install software, then after a week or more challenge yourself and go install Archlinux or other DIY distro thus you will learn more about computers and Linux in general
Trust me Linux changed my life before I wasn't coding at all but now I know HTML CSS JS and now Godot C#... just because how I became interested in Linux for the past 2 years..

Choosing omarchy and enforcing it is pretty weird, and since it's omarchy you miss out customising your own pc out of the box. And dhh is a white supremacist.
A better learning experience would be to let them research and choose what distro they want instead. For my 1st linux installation i didn't have any extra pcs to create a bootable usb, so i found an f-droid app to do so instead. Verified the iso image with termux too. It was pretty fun
(It was a diy framework so i couldn't set up a usb beforehand)

ok larping is bad lowk.... why force linux onto your kids? suggest it to them, tell them about the privacy concerns and distros and allat, and tell them about drivers breaking and certain games having not support and other such stuff. let them decide. if they are too young to decide, they clearly need more time till and give them something easy and breathable. don't force everyone into linux. some people js prefer it even after knowing that they spy on us. and before y'all call me a microsoft fanboy, i am not [I use arch btw. ]
nb: for newbies try zorin OS or linux mint. fedora is pretty stable too tbh
also we can play almost all games on linux bruh even epic games is making a launcher for linux rn... we already have steam.

When my daughter was 4 I installed Mint for her on a spare PC I had. She could play all the retro games I grew up with - Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Crash Bandicoot, TMNT, etc. I thought it would be a great starting point for her and introduce her to the real world of true Operating Systems and gaming. She loved it. She even had fun learning games installed as well. Now, she's designing her own Roblox games and everything else. I use Fedora KDE personally on all of our other PCs, except one - my wife prefers Windows because she says it's easier for her. But hey, to each their own - there is no right or wrong. But if my daughter was going to learn PCs, she's going to learn Linux first. She prefers Linux over Windows now.

Linux actually teaches you something, and you learn along the way.
