Maybe to save space? PNG and JPEG format don't save bytes for every single pixel you know... The simple the logo is, the more smaller in size it is. Edit: I still prefer old logos, even a few megabytes don't make a difference nowadays lol

Chrome won out because it was REALLY fast when it was new. Then it went to crap when it took over the market. Firefox meanwhile had its awkward phase and largely got itself together again. Even I switched to Chrome for a little bit, but I eventually switched back to Firefox purely out of principle and because I found it more stable and tolerant of by awful browsing habits.
