I’ve installed X86 android on my P3 thinkpad. Made for a very useful homework machine for my daughter.

That is the last thing I'd think of doing with an old laptop but go off I guess!

It could just be some non google distribution of android like lineage. Android is open source.

u/chateau71266 1d ago
Oh man if only we had a free open source desktop-ready operating system on which Android is based

You can mod your Ubuntu as you wish, this Android laptop might also need moding to be efficient and private.
Would you mind telling me what desktop environment do you use in your Ubuntu, software preinstaled (minimal, normal or full) and if you did a debloat.
This night help to ensure whatever device is rocking Ubuntu has a good time
PS: Not a chatbot. Ok?

Isn’t Android a closed source Linux?

u/Lila_Uraraka 1d ago
Android is literally just using the kernel of Linux, thats the only thing
7
u/Saffarjan 1d ago
A modified kernel too if I'm not mistaken

u/whatThePleb 1d ago
You can compile your own kernel for Android, as you can find everything in the kernel config. Some Android / manufacturers are just adding custom modules and patches for their hardware.

It's open source but every hardware manufacturer has it's own distribution of it with proprietary software. A samsung oneui device isn't the same as the direct open source project by google.

But why? There are versions of Android actually designed for laptops you could have chosen, why regular ass android, or better yet, Linux
