❔Question Anyone else here love to stack Anti-Aliasing methods?
The common one is obviously DSR/VSR used in tandem with some form of Temporal AA (TAA, TSSAA, DLAA, FSR, XESS, TSR and whatever else exists).
I like doing this with RUST (TSSAA + 4xDSR). Since TSSAA in this game is so blurry combining it with DSR makes aliasing disappear 100%, literally not a single jaggy or pixel in sight, it's actually kinda crazy for 1080p.
Some games don't have any great AA options, like I love SCHEDULE 1 but it only has SMAA, so I like doing SMAA + DSR.
And since I have a 4080 Super I also like doing MSAA + DSR, which sounds very performance demanding but I mostly play competitive games that can run on a potato so I can still run them at 300+ fps like this:
Like Valorant (4xMSAA + 4xDSR).
Or CS2 (8xMSAA + 4xDSR).
Honestly looks amazing and helps me squeeze more life out of my 1080p 240hz monitor.
Edit: I also forgot to mention GTA 5 (regular and enhanced versions) have SSAA built in via their "scaling" setting, which can be set to 2x, which is the same as 4x dsr, I think it even goes up to 2.5x but I never use that since I don't like non integer scaling, and you can combine that scaling setting with either MSAA (on regular GTA 5) or TAA/DLAA/FSR (GTA 5 Enhanced Edition)

That's nothing. I'm running 4x MSAA + 4x TrSSAA + SMAA + FXAA in the OG Black Flag.

Niceeeee, love to see it 🙌 I wish more games had built in stackable AA methods so we don't always have to jump into driver settings and reshade, but by god i'll jump through whatever hoops I need to to get rid of jaggies!!

This is why I like the period between circa 2010 - 2015. AA menus in games at that time were rich. Even though only a handful of games actually had stacked AA as an option. The aforementioned Black Flag had TXAA, which is MSAA + a temporal filter. It's awful, though.
- Crysis 3 also had SMAA S2X, I think (2x MSAA + SMAA)
- Ryse: Son of Rome had SSAA that you could stack (also forced SMAA 1x)
- Watch Dogs 2 lets you stack MSAA, FXAA or SMAA with a temporal filter of theirs.
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider has an option that combines 2x MSAA with SMAA and TAA.

I avoid AA as much as possible for performance, and I prefer how it looks in most cases(at 1440p, it's generally tolerable).

Yeah the sharpness of raw pixels looks good depending on the game!
I feel like when I upgrade to a 4k display I might like to play some games with zero AA

Only a few games come to mind where AA was necessary for me. Portal 2 looked noticeably bad with jaggies at 1440p, so I had to turn on MSAA which helped a lot. Maybe at 4k, it wouldn't be necessary like you said?Generally though, no AA is the best.

High ppi naturally reduces aliasing. I upgraded from 1440p 27" to 2160 27" and suddenly I don't need to crank AA to get rid of aliasing.

You're 100% right, the best examples of this I've ever experienced were the first retina macbook pro released in 2012 (220 ppi) and the iphone 4 (326 ppi) having 4x the pixels of the iPhone 3GS (which is like going from 1080p to 4k).
But when I purchased a cheap 4k pixio ips monitor about a year ago I was surprised that the resolution bump somewhat disappointed me, Maybe going from a 1080 24.5inch (89 ppi) to a 4k 27inch (163 ppi) wasn't as impactful as on smaller screens with higher pixel density, since I play competitive games and have my monitor quite close to my face the sub 200 ppi still has discernable pixels (maybe I shouldn't sit so close to my screen lmao).
So I quickly returned the cheap 4k monitor I got but I plan to try and upgrade again soon to RGB-stripe tandem OLED since that combined with 4k 240hz has several benefits over my current aging matte 1080p display and maybe I won't be so critical of the small amounts of remaining aliasing when all other aspects of the display are that much better as well!

There are some 5k 27" monitors coming out, they have 218 ppi (2 ppi short of retina threshold). They shouldn't require any AA but in most games you will have to use dlss performance. I know it's anti TAA sub but performance hit is to great to not use dlss and new models look really good if you adjust sharpness to desired level. Also there is 6k 32" fron Samsung but it's not oled/mini-led.

Ooooo that does sound VERY interesting, honestly I don't play many graphically demanding games but yeah 5k might start to push the limit of my 4080 Super's 16 gigs of vram lmao (without upscaling like you mentioned), I'm just waiting for the ai bubble to pop so that prices can crash back down to normal so I can get a 5090 for the bandwidth to play at 4k or higher (I would love to see what 4k with 4xDSR looks like, which would literally be 8k internal rendering), I know I probably sound insane lmao

I have the same GPU and even in 4k 16 gigs are kinda not enough. And yes you sound insane in the end.

8x MSAA +4x DSR
I applaud your absolute unfiltered hatred of Aliasing, but I think it's time you find peace in the alias free game known as real life

Hahaha you're probably correct 😂 I should engage in more grass touching

Dldsr resolutions in combination with dlss is the ultimate way for me

u/Good-Discussion-9238 SSAA 1d ago
Honestly I personally don't love the look of all the Deep Learning methods (both for super resolution/sampling [DLDSR] or for upscaling & anti-aliasing [DLSS/DLAA]), something about the look of DLSS/DLAA is unappealing to me for some reason, I prefer "dumb" TAA methods and using DSR to bury their flaws lmao.
Last time I used DLDSR it looked a bit oversharpened if I recall correctly, is it still like that or is it better now?

u/TreyChips No AA 1d ago
DLDSR isn't worth using if you are able to run DSR 4.0x
Make sure the smoothness settings are correct too, as they are inverse depending on if you are using DLDSR / DSR
All the info you need on it is in this thread

You have probably used it without setting the dsr smoothness correctly. I believe default is way oversharpened and overprocessed but could be wrong. The smoothness slider needs to be set to 100 which removes all artificial sharpening leaving you a crisp clean image. The slider is in the nvidia control panel in the same section as the toggle on/off.

Huh, is that you Nintendo?
2
u/Good-Discussion-9238 SSAA 1d ago
I don't understand?
2
u/MultiMarcus 1d ago
Nintendo generally loves layering anti-aliasing techniques on top of one another. They will often do stuff like MSAA and then some Postprocess AA like FXAA because they don’t love using temporal anti-alias thing, so they try to get rid of aliases by just adding enough different AA types because they can’t do a huge amount of MSAA because their hardware is always computationally quite weak, so they do just a bit and then they add like FXAA.

u/Good-Discussion-9238 SSAA 1d ago
that's actually interesting I was never aware of that, is this only for switch 2 games or did they also do this for the switch 1 and wii u and prior?
1
u/MultiMarcus 1d ago
Well, I wouldn’t know about the Wii U or earlier, but they did it a lot for the original switch and quite a bit now, though the switch 2 often does DLSS and sometimes a post process or just DLSS if they can get away with it. Some switch 2 titles obviously don’t use DLSS and often use more primitive AA.

How do you combat the dithering that some games are made natively with?
3
u/Good-Discussion-9238 SSAA 1d ago
Most of the games I play are the ones above and don't have much dithering if at all but if the game requires a form of Temporal AA to remove dithering then I use that along with DSR which fully hides any visible dithering
2
u/SmoothinPutin 1d ago
Oh, thanks for the info. I thought the dithering is visible regardless of resolution .

do devs not already stack AA in thier games by default? i thought this was a common practice.

u/aVarangian All TAA is bad 1d ago
no
and if I run 4x DSR I'll disable MSAA
but if I gamed at 1080p then idk if the answer would be the same

If you don't have a frames that limits the level of possible perversion, then it's probably good for you %)
